Who likes Mosquitoes?
So you don't like those pesky mosquitoes.
Here's a tip that was given at a recent gardening forum.
Put some water in a white dinner plate (I suppose a small white platito will do) and add a couple drops of Lemon Fresh Joy Dish Washing Liquid. Set the dish on your porch, patio, picnic table, park bench, or other outdoor area.
Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white plate color, or what, BUT ... mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh Joy & water mixture, and usually within about 10 feet of the plate.
TRY IT --- it works just super! It may seem trivial, but it may also help to control mosquitoes around your home, (especially in areas where the dengue and malaria carrying mosquitoes are reaching epidemic proportions).
Pass this on to anyone who likes sitting out in the evening, or when they're having a cook out.
It's safer than mosquito coils - no offensive odor and harmful fumes, not risk of fire.

have tried in a controlled environment...the mosquitoes gone for a while maybe because of the smell but they're back after a while... was not able to find dead mosquitoes around, tho, to prove that it can kill these pesky bastards... will try another experiment, catch these mosquitoes one by one and let them drink the solution ;D

Guys,
From my sister in Singapore !! She has had to appear in a Singapore Court because of the fact that the 'Mosquito Police' there found mosquito larvae in an outdoor pot in her backyard !! She got 'cited' for this violation, went to court, found 'Guilty' and she had to pay a very hefty fine.
She has been doing this many years after that: she says:
I DISCOVERED ON MY OWN THAT IF I PUT MY DISHWASHING LIQUID (ONE SQUIRT) IN MY DISH DRYING TRAY, MOSQUITOS CANNOT BREEED IN THE STAGNANT WATER ACCUMULATED IN THE TRAY....AND IF THEY ATTENPT TO LAY EGGS, IT SEEMS THEY DIE. HAVE SEEN DEAD MOSQUITOS AND LARVAE IN THE TRAY. HAVE BEEN DOING THIS EVERSINCE AND ALWAYS WORKS. IT SEEMS THEY DO NOT LIKE DISHWASHING LIQUID.....

Q.E.D. !! :)

Well, its worth a try...
By the way, are mosquito coils toxic and health hazardous?
What I find effective is lighting up Citronella oil (Citromint brand) in a potpourri burner. Mosquitos hate the smell.

Get bug spray and bring Benadryl it should help. Take care.
I am currently living in Sierra Leone where there is a LARGE mosquito population and I use a bug spray with at least 30% DEET content. It really works well. Good luck!

the dish washing liquid forms a barrier of sorts between the surface of the water and the air as it floats on the surface. larvae stick out a breathing apparatus from underneath the water into the air for breathing as they don't have gills. the liquid detergent prevents the larvae from breathing in air and they die. i use cooking oil for the garden ponds . as for the adult mosquito, the detergent probably coats their abdomens when they land to lay eggs and suffocates them or their wings preventing them from flying away. think la brea tar pits.

I dont have the luxury of using sprays & insecticides at the moment. Have a 10 month old baby in the house. Haven't tried the joy lemon yet for the interiors....
But for a quickfix, i dont throw away fresh lemon, orange peels & even calamansi.. I put them under the sofas, kitchen table and work desks whenever needed.
May just work as a repellant, but surely does the job.
Are there other organic stuff that i may use? Hoping for suggestions..Thanks

Yes, just read in the papers yesterday that mosquito coils & sprays are not safe for unborn babies & children. Scary considering I use 2 katols a day for outdoors & spray the inside of the house at least once a week. I'm very paranoid with the increase in dengue cases, and I have 2 kids in the house. Turns out my measure against dengue was harming them too.
Here's the article: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/metro/view/20100915-292362/Home-pesticides-harmful-to-unborn-babies-says-expert
Here's another DIY project that will attract & trap mosquitos. Materials are brown sugar, yeast, water, soda bottle.

Will try this one & the dishwashing liquid, then I'll give you guys a feedback .

AND THE RESULTS ARE IN! As I promised I did actual testing of the 2 DIY mosquito traps: yeast/water/sugar & water/joy.
Unfortunately, none of them worked.
I tried them both in our garage where I find a lot of mosquitoes. Tried them on different days, 48 hours each.
The yeast/water/sugar trapped 1 ant & 2 UFIs (unidentified flying objects, but looked like small gamu-gamo), while the water/joy trapped nothing but dust.

Saved us the trouble of doing everything all over again.

Yes I find this tip very interesting, I showed this anti mosquito tip to my wife the other day and she was surprised with this very simple concoctions of water and lemon fresh joy
washing liquid could be effective against mosquitos.
Though we don't have dengue carrying mosquitoes around here, still there are plenty of mosquitoes in our place specially during late afternoons when the sun is already going down.
I guess its due to the fact that our house is surrounded by various tress and plants wherein
most mosquitoes wood also lay their eggs.
Right now we have some white plates scattered around the house with the anti mosquito mixture in it and doing experimentation on what will be more effective against mosquito, the mosquito coils or the water and lemon joy mixture.

Yes that's the one that I tried. Didn't work, and now I have a whole bag of yeast that I have no use for...
