View Full Version : Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

Since I constantly get driven away from my real project (sailboat) into small projects, I thought I'd start off a thread for all those extra-curricular woodworking activities.
Here's one: A stereo shelf to house an amplifier, player (cheap DVD player used as CD player), and a subwoofer. The satellites of the SW has been installed with brackets elsewhere.
Started with some leftover kamagong and tried my hand at the bandsaw for some bookmatching (I think that's what it's called).

Since I did not have enough kamagong, tried some mahogany. Here they are with some rabbeted planks for the sides to make them stiffer.

My waterloo has always been finishing. I got the darkest stain I could find and tried it on one of the mahogany shelves to see if it would approximate the dark kamagong. NOT!

I cut the four structural columns out of kamagong. Didn't have enough good wood. One leg was made out of a piece with rotten portions so even had to carve out the rotten parts and stick in some good pieces. Hopefully, after some gluing, epoxy-masilya, and sanding, it'll be OK.

The lighter strips are mahogany to and some stiffness and also cosmetic.
Here, I glued in the middle shelf. Bottom and top are just placed there. Darn, forgot to make the dowel holes on the columns. Will have to do that later jig-less.

BTW, this is the makeshift stereo shelf that the new one will replace.

This old one was a stopgap solution done in about 30mins using Kreg tools. SWMBO will be happy.

Is this the india ink used to refill marker pens? Wouldn't this turn the wood into black instead of of the deep-red-purple-ish Kamagong color?

Can't multiple coats of the stain compound the darkness and get close to the real thing?

@Violaine
Yes. I just love those Rockler bar clamps.
@Timber
I know India Ink well. Used it in high school with my whats-it-called pen for lettering in Old English. I second Jarod's question. But I'll give it a shot. I applied some fake tung-oil for sanding conditioner, though, so not sure kung kakapit.
@Jarod
The stain I got was too brown and thick. I think multiple coats will turn it into a dark brown; not tha real black of kamagong. Also, because teh oil stain is thick, it will eventually hide the lovely bookmatched grain.
@Ernie
I have one of those, I think Dark Teak. I also have Dark Walnut penetrating wood stains. Or the other way around. From experience, penetratnig wood stain really turns dark but leaves none of the monochromatic wood grain effect. I think Wenge should be promising. Yes, will remind you by text on Sat early morning. So, are you the one getting Pyth's damaged planer? Made an offer to get it but it's reserved already by someone.

was thinking of getting it, i have one and the problem with that is that its too loud. i bought a makita planer thicknesser a month ago but still havent had the chance to set it up since 3 phase. di pa ako makakita someone that knows or will help me install it. i left it dun sa isang space along with the other machines. i really really need to set it up soon as i got some sash work project for pasig LGU. if by chance you can or know someone paki advice naman para mapag usapan cost

I'm really all thumbs when it comes to two-phase-three-phase conversions. But I recall Willy Fernando mentioning it someime back so he may know how.

Finally finished! Well...almost. After setting it up, I think it would be nice to have feet. Or, at least, some light-duty casters.

I know, I know. The cabinet is probably worth a lot more than my sound system. It's for ambient music only so it won't win any audiophile's heart.
Looking Great Ding specially the wood shade combination. Hmmm casters might be a good addition.

If you're not going to move it around much, maybe rubber/plastic protectors will do.

Salamat, everyone.
I think I'll get some small casters some weekend. It may need to be moved occasionally when the maid sweeps. I don't want them lifting it by hefting the top. Baka matangggal (he-he, walang tiwala sa tibay ng sariling trabaho).

Thanks. BTW, after fooling around with stains and Zar (fake) Tung Oil; I found that Sadolin Hardwood Oil provided the finish I wanted. I got that nice, seemingly bare wood surface with a nice sheen. Running my fingers on the surface, it's a great pleasure to feel that glassy smooth finish; of course, after some progressive-grit sanding. I used this same oil on my workbench. Hope people here start using it so True Value will keep importing the stuff. I'd hate for it to become locally "extinct" like Boiled Linseed Oil.

Nice point there bro, I myself am becoming to be a Sadolin wood stain and oil user.

wilcon balintawak has this giant rack selling SADOLIN, all kinds, wood oil of different kind like natur (teak), colorless, and others, they also have the sadolin yatch gloss, satin, flat, plus other Sadolin Stains. thats where i get my stash, SADOLIN is my other addiction.

You really are a baaaad influence, Ernie.
So, tried Sadolin Yacht yet?

wood prepped with Sadolin oil or any wood oil for that matter becomes a good dust magnet for weeks.
the sheen may only be apparent when the oil has sinked in and penetrated the core of the wood and the surface almost dry of it.
but then the Sadolin is expensive at around 500++ per quart.

Any suggestions, Violaine?
I'd be very happy to find a cheaper alternative that doesn't attract dust but still gives that light shine of apparent bare wood.
Bookmarked...

the way i finish my items.. mga 3 coats sanding sealer till its silky smooth to the touch then i just rub it off with that SADOLIN hardwood oil.
i tried na ding the Sadolin Yacht, its nice!!
pero that 500 peso quart is well worth it since matagal din maubos. i think i have 5 quarts na sa workshop. everytime i go wilcon balintawak i buy one thinking na baka maubus yung 1 quart ko sa workshop. but guess what, i have 1 open and 4 seal till now, plus 2 quarts yacht pala. addict!!

I always used this to finish my workbenches... Doc, you need not wait for it to dry after brushing. you need to wipe of the excess after 10 to 20 minutes, that way it dries much faster and doesn't attract dust as much...:smoke:

@ding,
ah no i havent found any alternative to the that imported wood oil..let me know if you find one soon.hehe..the quart i have is almost empty.
@timber,
....i wipe off the excess with a clean rag...thats the continuation of the story hehe
but then again..it takes some time for the whole thing to dry up...i hate it when after a day the surface is still tacky..
btw..i think shellac can be sprayed over the almost dried Sadolin oil.
