View Full Version : Automotive Tools
This is an example of a Cold Air Intake competition setup. The air filter is in the fender well where it can draw cool air.
We are replacing this one with the RAM Air type setup above.

Hopefully after finishing the suspension later we will do a full engine rebuild to blueprint it.
The one eyed car na to .... not a setup for daily driver.

Got lucky today and had chance to upgrade the Pullers tool arsenal. Found some New Old Stock interchangeable 2 and 3 jaws kit. Rusty but nothing that WD40 and bit of wire brush will not clean. Aside from cosmetic issues most important of all is that the kit is in great shape.

Automotive tools setup is eating up all the budget ....... :( nothing left for materials anymore.
@jay,
Im curious, are those RAM air intakes legal for daily use? since you lose one headlamp upon installing it?
@jay,

Daytime it's 100% ok. At night If you have fog lights then it's still ok 50/50. However this car is not daily driver use anymore.
Oh ok..do you race that car?
We plan to later if the funds permit. There are tracks in former Clark Air Base and also in Batangas. Quarter mile races and also track runs for fun.
That would be interesting..i've watched races at batangas racing circuit before and at subic, quite fun!
Heat is your friend for freeing up stubborn rusted nuts, bolts and parts. Like this rusted up T-handle that won't even move when hammered down. 24 hours submerged in diesel and WD-40 didn't even do a thing to let it slide.

http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/GJ/IMGP2114.jpg
Heat it up to red hot. Sometimes rust is so much that it needs a helper too. Run down some paraffin as it will creep in.
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/GJ/IMGP2121.jpg
Out it slides now after hammering with just wood. Notice the rust build up.
Finally got the last kits to complete my Puller Set.

Even at used tool prices ang sakit pa rin sa bulsa ng mga prices.
None the less except for a few non essential parts the kit is now complete. I don't think I have the spirit to go for the cabinet anymore. Not needed.

Hopefully we will be using these when we do the major suspension bushings upgrade for our Honda when the parts arrive.
For Oily and Greasy hands this is my choice for a Hand Cleaner. Works well and have been using the product for a long time now.

My son just came from a fun track run with the Honda SiR engine vibrating. The left side engine support damaged.
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/2-18.jpg
Most Original upper Engine Supports have oil filled bump stops. Notice the spilled oil. If your car still has OEM engine supports installed and you suddenly experience engine vibration then it's good to check for spilled oil on the support. If there is then most probably you will need to replace.

Delayed pasko. Last year purchases pa ito.
I'm really amazed with PB Swiss quality. I thought the Germans were very good already.
The packaging says Small Parts was the source. They were taken over by Amazon and looks like they off loaded inventory. I doubt these PB Swiss tools can be purchased at the same price I paid unless they go on a major closeout again.

Hello sirs,
My first post here.
@sir JayL,
Nice tools you have there....(how about donating some "tools-not-used-often"?).hehe. peace out....Na-overwhelm nako sa first ten pages pa lang netong thread na eto..
As per my toolbox, i only purchase the common tool brands at ACE, Handyman, etc. Yun lang kinaya ng bulsa, hehe...my kikoy kit contains Daiken, Stanley, Eagle, SKs, Tomeco, some China tools before the branded ones, 1 box of Craftsman from my dad kasi hindi na rin nya ginagamit...
I'm planning to get also an air compressor this coming summer once i get the additional budget from wifey...Any brand you suggest? The Vespa brand is very common at shops. Is it a good buy?
Plus, I'm planning to start my first carpentry project this weekend. A simple cabinet for our academic books (wifey and i are both teachers anyway)

Gentlemen,
I have been lurking on this board for quite a while now and I honestly have learned a lot. I am now in the process of making my own general purpose workshop. I would be mostly dealing with motorcycles and maybe dabble a little bit on my car. I would also like learn how to paint and weld on my own. My budget for the tools would be around 30 to 35K. Do you think this would be enough?
I have e-canvassed the tools that I would want to have and I want your comments on my selection.

Sir,
What's your location? If ever you want to lessen the costs, you may try to look around at Marina Arcade, Dau, Pampanga. I've bought some of my tools there. Got a SKs 6-pt socket wrench set and Tomeco Combination Wrench for a total of P3k. Sabihin mo lang sa mga nagbebenta na para sa shop mo para at least mabawasan pa yung price kasi kung for personal use or hobby lang mas mataas ang ibibigay na presyo...Air compressors, special tools, vises, etc. madami din dun. May brand new and surplus.
Let's wait for the tool gurus here. For sure marami silang alam kung saan at magkano.

If ever if it's your first time there I'll give you the directions anyway....After the Dau exit, you'll pass by the Shell gas station then Dau bus terminal at your left. Take a right turn upon reaching the T-intersection (that is the MacArthur hiway na)... about 100-200 meters (i think), Marina Arcade is at the left side of the road.

Hi there triacontakaidigon,
First of all congrats to your future target and endeavor, who knows it might point to a direction of becoming a future business for you. Like what you have just said in your post, you have e-canvassed the tools that you are planning to purchase. I presume you will be buying this tools one at a time and still maybe be canvassing for cheaper priced tools but still with quality. :p
With regards to the welding machine, why don't you check out the new PHM classified ads forum, we have a member here selling his welding machine for only php 4K, he is selling it because he bought a new one. Better yet PM him so you could discuss with him what you would want to know about his welding machine if ever you are interested. ;)
Ok good luck on your tool hunting and God bless.

You may check here first, aside from the gas/transpo/toll fee cost you get to choose on what you like and not on what is only available. With the price at hand, you get to decide better if going to Dau would be worth the gamble.

I would suggest the same, not only can you get them cheaper, they would be brand new...
I have to admit New Panda is tool heaven :)
But what other brands are value for money. I always drool over the tools posted here but alas I can't afford them :( is there a brand and other shops that could be recommended. For personal use only

New Panda? Personal use? what tools are you looking for?
Panda Construction supply is the store we are refering to.
I buy my tools for personal use and not for lending.
hard to recommend unless we know what you are looking for specifically. Rikon is a good brand and Grizzly is decent with a good price to boot and there is Torq which is bang for the buck, but that is for a bandsaw. Is that what you are looking for?

I'm planning to get also an air compressor this coming summer once i get the additional budget from wifey...Any brand you suggest? The Vespa brand is very common at shops. Is it a good buy?
If you're going to get a Vespa compressor I suggest you move on to the 2 HP model. The price difference between the 1 HP and the 2 HP is not that much but you get a lot more air for the money added. It will be worth it. Both 1 HP and 2 HP are of the same size with the latter just being a bit more heavier because of the bigger motor.
@BipMatinez
The Double Flaring tool kit you need is available at Panda. The price is around 1,500 pesos and the brand is Lota. Made in Taiwan.
If interested I will shoot a pic for you next time I go there.

It is used for the end connection of small diameter tube pipes ( i.e steel or copper ) such as those found in vehicle brake and AC lines.

Craftsman does not manufacture tools. Their punch and chisels are made by Mayhew in the USA.

Im curious, where in metal working or automotive do you use the chisels?
If you ever let go of those PB swiss punches let me be the first to know hehehe ;) :p
Question, do you sharpen punches? I got pointy ones for starting holes in metal- or at least that's what i think it's for. It's getting a little blunt tho. (It's true, once you've made a small impression, the drill bit will never go anywhere =).)

Sometimes on stuff that needs a bit of persuasion to get off ..... like stuck up rounded bolts etc.....

Yeah I sharpen these all the time when it gets dull.
Yes if you have the 118 deg drill bits ( need the punch ) . For the 135 deg split points walking is minimized even without the punch hole. ( Metal )
DP I sometimes don't punch anymore. I use center bit first then the drill bit. ( Metal )
This tool is on a very special sale price of $11.13. These are very useful. If I did not have a kit then I would surely grab the opportunity.

I'm not sure if available locally. It's the strap that is special on this tool. Non marring and sticks well to polished surfaces. Available ones I saw here are the chain types.

If you need urgently then PM me. I don't use this tool often and can part with it as I can always get another one.

Since Dau is closer to my home than Manila area, I shopped again for tools (of course, with permission from my swmbo:rolleyes:).....
I laid my eyes on a 7pc pipe threader Crosswind brand (made in USA as embossed on the tool) drilling your pocket for P2.5k...Is it a good buy? didn't buy it yet as I want to ask the masters here especially on how to spot a fake.
Instead, I ended up buying 5 pcs of tools for P3.5k. the ff tools are: metric tap and die set (some fake German I presume), Crosswind vise grip, Ratchet tie down (can't see the brand but it says made in Sweden), Wynns impact drive and an el cheapo 4 inch Machinist Vise with non-replaceable jaws......

The best Ratcheting Wrench design so far ( for me) . Box and Ratcheting Combination. Usually these wrenches come with an open end. This new design is a lot better. Break the fastener loose with the box end then flip the wrench and finish the job using the ratcheting side. The reverse is true for tightening.
Extra length for more torque. The 19mm is 15 1/2" long.

This is a special tool to aid in removing Honda Crankshaft Pulleys.
It will hold the pulley so as not to rotate while the bolt is taken off. Will need 2 long breaker bars and a 19mm socket wrench IIRC.

http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/Pinoy%20Handyman/IMGP3501.jpg
Other unconventional ways are used such as jamming the flywheel with a bolt. It works but who knows if by chance it will cause more damage. Better to have the right tool.
At times an air impact wrench will work too but if the bolt is very tight then using the breaker bars w/ this special tool does the trick.

I've had this kit for more than 15 years now. It's a Metrinch and it works for both Metric and Englsih fasteners. I usually use it when working on a mixed ( standards ) fastener project. Something like you don't know if you're dealing with a Metric or English nut or bolt. Specially the Chinese they at times mix Metric and English standards in their products.

Energy Suspension Urethane bushings are great if properly installed. However in my opinion these are too hard for regular daily driver cars. Ride comfort is sacrificed in favor of performance.
Obstructions are a major hurdle when working on tight engine bays. This is where specialty tools shine.
The back side engine support was a bit difficult to install. We needed to take out 2 coolant lines ( for the heater ) in order to take it out and reinstall. The hose clamp pliers made the job easier.
The coil overs are Tein and fully adjustable both in damping and ride height.

Yes no kidding ... the front suspension got shot up. Mis aligned track rods and stabilizers plus ripped off axle boots and what not. Ask Moji he saw the car when it was down.
And to add to the injury nobody sells Slipstream mags per piece. Rota Italia was backordered by 6 months. We had to buy 1 set ( 4 pcs ) 2nd hand to get one piece. We scouted Banawe and Evangelista for months and no one had the size we needed. Luckily we found a set online. This is what made the car sleep that long in the garage. Now we're indefinitely stuck up with 3 spare mags. :(
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/IMGP3825.jpg
The mags edges were not damaged much. The center hub was mis aligned and for this reason it can't be fixed anymore because it cannot be balanced.

It was my son John who had the slide. A car with stock suspension won't do that but it will roll over.
Thank God the coilover was not damaged. Sobra sakit sa bulsa talaga yan and you're right. You can't buy one piece only.
Jarod ... SIR resale value is very very good. Yes you should have purchased new one when you had the chance. We purchased ours second hand and paid a premium compared to other Honda in same class.

Look on the brighter side... hindi mo na siguro kailangan bumili uli ng rim pang tool stand..

Nice to learn from your wips idol.
The Honda SiR DOHC VTec engine is already very powerful out from the factory. Currently we only have bolt ons ( Intake Header Exhaust ) on it. We plan to later pull out the engine and try to give it more horses.
However before we do that we want to upgrade the instrumentation and put more gauges.
This car model is a PHDM but we upgraded the Dash board to USDM ( US Domestic Market ) specs.
We're still undecided if to use this for the additional gauges or a gauge pod.
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/IMGP3827.jpg
We also installed a B&M Short Throw Shifter on it and upgraded the shifting mechanism bushings to Energy Suspension Polyurethanes.
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/IMGP3833.jpg
I know that this is suppose to be an auto tools thread but let me post some pics of the car interior since it's also part of the WIP.

Thanks for dropping by bro. Please post in our metal works when you do some WIPs.
The new suspension bushings changed the ride height of the car. Somehow it raised it and now we need to recalibrate again and lower the car.
These are the spanners used to adjust the ride height of Tein Coilovers.

Tigthen the rings back. This a sometimes a very tedious process. Adjust , road test to settle suspension to normal after jacking up , probably recalibrate again etc... If one does not enjoy doing it then it will be a chore.

Decided to first try what's available on hand which is vinegar. Let's see how good vinegar soaking works on rust. Glad to hear the Tein is spared. Not sure if you guys already tried the Potenzas and the Toyo Proxes for more grip.
Emperor are mostly for the those have the moolah to spend without having their hands getting dirty, but those are just my observation and i don't mean anything bad.
What gauges are you planning to put, Defis?
Posted via PHM Mobile
Imagine if we are spending for service. The cost will file up quickly so this is best left with DI Y and the money saved used for buying tools. None the less the setup cannot be brought to a regular mechanic. Lots of stuff that needs to be read and studied to do the job properly.

I think it's because you forgot to put crushed pepper and garlic.
Kidding aside, the locally available vinegar (as synthetic as it could be) could not be that acidic for such use. It may be acidic for our taste but not for rust removal I think. The rust may have already saturated much of the needed acid so better get another fresh batch I suppose.
Ninong, how come you did not use baking powder as you previously planned. It's available in all groceries and the Hammer brand that Owyn used imported but could be found I guess in mall hardware still. I know you already read this but for the benefit of those who are new to electrolysis...
http://www.instructables.com/id/Electrolytic-Rust-Removal-aka-Magic/
I would like to suggest muriatic acid on the worst case scenario if naval jelly is not available. If the vinegar doesn't cut it, you may try "coking" it just like what the local golfers do, they submerge the iron wedges in coke (Coca-Cola regular) overnight.
PS: The coke may not be safe to drink anymore the next day :D
@ Jarod
This is the first time I'm hearing "coking". Does it remove rust too?
On the vinegar I noticed that the rust became loose that when I lightly scrape it it literally falls out.
I'll power wash this pliers and then put it back in fresh vinegar.

It was the vinegar that made rust cleaning easy. Jarod says that a orig vinegar will be better and I believe it would. Acetic acid lifts off rust from the metal.

Yep, just like the vinegar the acid in the coke eats up the rust.
Looks like new! does vinegar etch the steel?
Looks like new! does vinegar etch the steel?
I don't think so. It only works up to the rust marks. This the first time I tried this but on my observation it basically floats the rust so you can at times even peel if off the metal surface.

You can use diluted muriatic acid to remove & etch the rust. After removing the rust soak it in diluted baking soda to neutralized the acid.
Iron reacts with muriatic acid and releases dangerous fumes be sure you wear your personal protective equipment.

Actually Jay what I meant is the opposite. The real ones are sour due to the natural fermentation unlike the synthetic ones which are basically composed of water acetic acid and caramel to add some taste and color. So the synthetic ones (mostly the ones we buy in the grocery even if they claim to be all natural) are better to use because it contains real acid made by man.
I know because I used to make vinegar way before I knew what was acid all about.

Our Toyota Rav4 AC fan just gave up the ghost.
Here's 700 pesos worth of a surplus Denso motor. New one quoted was 10.5K. Might as well chance up at this used one and hope it holds well. Just make sure to choose when buying surplus ... yun medyo sariwa pa and test it well in the store. Fan speed, physical, wires if any, shaft play etc.. Warranty is 1 week.

Housing and fan blade included but won't be needed as I will use the existing ones. Probably just keep these for spares.
If your radiator or AC fan won't turn anymore but when you make " tok tok" it suddenly turns then most probably the brushes are going bonks. These are usually sealed type motors and non repairable.

Nice update Jay. What do you call the dolly that the young Jay is using? I like that since I was a kid and great for goofing around the house :D
What do yo mean by cocking sound? My car has this intermittent thug sound when I turn the steering fast when driving slow like turning into a corner or parking.
It's called a Creeper ....
The sound he's looking for was a result of the energy suspension bushing upgrades ... something is building up pressure then suddenly released as a thug sound ... sometimes released even when the car is parked already ... normal aftermarket parts effect ... needs more tuning ( sometimes it needs reversing or rotating the installed part, at times greasing , repositioning, swapping etc... ) John will find it sooner or later.

Here's mine too made of lumber core plywood. Auto, carpentry and electrical tools. Just enough to store my tools. Actually I planned to use the plywood as the table top for my workbench but then decided time to give my tools a decent home

Glad to see that more and more people are posting automotive tools. DIY work on cars and vehicles saves us money and we get to know our rides much better.
I hope more and more professional mechanics post their tools too.

Oz,
If it was me buying I'll check the Click Type torque wrenches. Kung pang gulong no need for expensive torque wrench.
eto sana kaya lang hanggang 150 ft-lb lang. Check Sears din.

You can start with 1/2" drive then 3/8" and then 1/4" to cover the entire range for your intended application. No single Torque Wrench will "Effectively" cover the whole 2 to 250 ft-lb range, need at least 3. . If you have a Sears near you then you could probably check the Craftsman Microtorq Torque Wrench series. The 1/2" drive usually range from 20-250 ft-lbs.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00944595000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00944597000P?prdNo=5&blockNo=5&blockType=G5
For automotive use like mid sized Suvs and Sedans here I would go get 3/8" drive first in the range of 10-100 ft-lbs.
If your particular target is mostly lug nuts then just get this ...

Jack Stands :
3 to 4 ton above because of SUVs .... just physically check the units paying attention to clearance issues when used.

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00950168000P?prdNo=12&blockNo=12&blockType=G12
Check with GJ again for jack and jack stands. Tons of info there from Craftsman users. I have no direct experience with the above except what I just read there.
Better yet post a thread on the particular Craftsman you will be buying before pulling the trigger. They will give all the ups and downs of the product itself.
Hope this helps.

Mababa range niyan. 25-250 inch-lb so divide mo by 12 = 2-20 foot lb. Hanggang spark plug lang kaya niya.
Eto kunin mo ... http://www.tooltopia.com/gearwrench-85054.aspx
Gearwrench sockets maganda na mura pa. However if you plan to use impact tools you can prefer to get impact sockets first rather than chrome so you can use it on both ratchets and impact wrenches.
Get a kit ... sockets + ratchet unless you brought your ratchet with you.
http://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-80701-49-Piece-2-Inch-12-Point/dp/B0014ZZ4WE/ref=sr_1_30?ie=UTF8&qid=1323497426&sr=8-30
Most probably you will need both SAE and Metric.
Search Amazon for Gearwrench bargains. Remember you can start either with 3/8" drive or 1/2" drive set.
If you prefer impact sockets then Grey Pneumatic or Sunex are very good bang for the buck.
http://www.amazon.com/Grey-Pneumatic-1328RD-Standard-Fractional/dp/B000XQ3OE0/ref=sr_1_14?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1323497599&sr=1-14
Sample lang yan ... Amazon is a good source . Just check for bargains.

@jay,

Yes I do work on the car electrical myself unless it's really too job intensive. The 2 relays are for the horns. I have 2 horn sets installed. 1 relay per horn pair.
I believe the Battery Terminals were purchased at Mayo Parts in Evangelista.
TIP :
a dab of anti seize on the plugs prior to installation can go a long way and help make sure the plugs go out easily on the next spark plugs change

Bro ossie, hello!
If I may insert, you can something like the Lisle Inline Spark Tester (http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-20610-Inline-Spark-Tester/dp/B0002STSC6) to visually check and compare the spark performance. Just make sure to get an extension of you engine's SP hole is too deep as the tester is somewhat short for my car.
For the SP cable/ignition cable/HTW (High Tension Wire) resistance check, it would actually depend on your car's specs. You may check you manual or search online for the required minimum resistance rating per meter and just by using a VOM (Volt Ohm Meter) and using a digital one would be convenient.
HTH.
Sorry for the expounded explanation, as I know you guys are already auto inclined. It's just for those peeps who will be reading them in the future that are somewhat new to cars.
@ Ossie
Hmmm very seldom do I test on spark plugs and cables. unless I'm trouble shooting a tune up problem.
Just as Jarod said this tool can can be used to check sparks.
http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-New-INLINE-SPARK-TESTER-LIS20610/dp/B005DC0LM2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1332074187&sr=8-2

As much as I would like to help, I have no hands-on experience with ditributor-less setups. The best I could do is send you some LINKS (http://www.google.com/search?q=coil+pack+testing&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) but I guess you have done that already. Good luck on your tune-up.
Btw, not sure how long are your HTWs but the recommended rating for my Japanese car is 16 kohms per meter. Better try to compare another set if possible.
I need an Idle Air Control Valve ( Servo ) for a Lancer GSR 2000. OEM is 21K, Japan replacement is 12.5K ( both no warranty ) while surplus is 5.5K ( one week warranty ).
No surplus stock in Evangelista St in Makati so I guess it's Banawe next.
This is my surplus supplier in Evangelista. Moji as well gets his parts here.

Yes it can withstand and was designed for impact tools too. For this reason I chose Dynabrade brand. It's a staple air swivel for mechanics in GJ.
It's a bit expensive thus I placed it in a quick connect. Others put one each on their air tools and install permanent whip hoses .
