that is simple.... a Makita Jointer/Planer combo. not sure of the model, but I know it cost about 60ish... if I had the money and space, there is no doubt I have one already...
I have a Ryobi thickness planer and a Delta jointer but ... if you can sweet talk your wife into getting a Makita, GO FOR IT. I've not used either tool of the Makita brand but you can't go wrong with them except for maybe paying for quality you really don't need.

. . . . . . . . . . hmmmm kawawa naman wife ko ahahhaha. I can have her pay half maybe. I'll check this out.
I am also scouting for some taiwan brand ones which a friend of mine said they sell.
There is a dude online (another site) that sells ryobi thickness planer at really cheap price... its scarily cheap though. I dont know if its china knock-off then they just tagged ryobi on it.
Bro I probably have the same MIC Ryobi and I must say it has served me well. I have no idea but I've planed A LOT of wood with it especially since I almost always buy S2S sun dried wood (good for boat building). The biggest problem you'll have is finding spare parts when it does breakdown. I dread the day so I have 3 broken ones to get parts from :). If you do buy these surplus thickness planers make sure it is complete. Most importantly, make sure it includes the blade alignment jig for when you remove the blades for sharpening. It is not really such a big deal if it doesn't come with one, you can make your own, but it would be good to have it.
What Taiwanese brand does your friend carry?

I still dont know.. he hasnt gotten back to me since new year. I am also getting some 36" clamps from him too. If i can get hold of him again :)
Taiwan already make good tools but I've not seen the more popular brand in the U.S. here. Keep us posted.

I was once with Timber when we visited the Makita Distributor. I too saw this jointer / planer combo. Very very well built and IIRC still Jap made. I think the retail is around 75K. 60ish will still be a good price. A serious woodworker would want one like this in his arsenal for sure.

The guy in that blog got it for 800$ !!!!! ( he is a canadian living in Japan and refers to his workshop as THE DUNGEON hahah)
Thats 40K tops here if the price is maintained..... I am hoping that Jayl's price is wrong hehe
if it is 60 K... i can wait for half a year. Not in a rush naman.
