I have long used established paint brands like Boysen. But lately, I see many people using lower cost brands like Coat Saver. Are there any differences between these brands aside from price?

On the other side of the spectrum, Ace and others sell premium US paints with "guarantees" like 10 years, etc. Are they worth it?

Finally, I once painted a plywood wall with Flat Wall Latex, which I normally use as a prime coat. I bought this liter of Boysen at a small paint store. The paint didn't cover at all. It seemed like I didn't actually paint the wall, but only stained it a bit. Is there such a thing as fake Boysen paints?

bossing, i don't use latex paint for woods they are for masonry and are water based. i might be wrong but that's what i know. maybe reason why it turns out like that.

That used to be the pattern. Latex for concrete and enamel for wood. But most American houses which are mostly of wood use a latex-based paint. In fact, they also use latex paints for their boats, which see a lot of wear.

using low cost paint for me is parang useless kc karamihan ng low cost paint you have to paint more coatings at least 3-4 times to achive the right color/shade, unlike the premium brand 1-2 coats lang ok na , eh price diff mostly 50-100 pesos per gallon lang naman n common mistake sa atin is karamihan pag first coating palagi yun low quality paint ginagamit, reason is "first coating pa lang naman", tapos papatungan ng premium brand, that's a BIG mistake kc pag hindi masyado kumapit yun paint sa first coating due to low quality, pati yun topcoat mo matatanggal din

Thanks Fortuner.

That's sounds very logical. First coat should be as good as top coat.

Based on experience on using low cost paints!

Low cost lang talaga sila but in reality your shelling out more money. A normal painting job requires 2 coats for repainting and 3 coats for new surface. pag low cost ang gamit mo aabutin ka ng 3-4 coats which is more costly for both materials and labor.

For plywood use the solvent based type as primers lang then you can put latex paint for topcoat.

Sa US kasi they dont usually have wood, more of gypsum boards lang kaya water based ang gamit.

sir,
Boysen plexibond is for waterproofing (horizontal or vertical) , mix with 6.5 to 8kg of cement per gallon yan , pwede mo din apply sa roofdeck mo if may leak or preventive measure lang, kulay cemento outcome niya, so kailangan mo pa rin ng topcoat finsh

Low cost paints are usually low in pigments (hiding) and uses low cost binders like pva, vac or a combination of acrylic and other low cost materials so in essence your getting what you pay for - a low cost paint.

High cost paints usually uses high grade acrylics or a combination of acrylic and a high cost materials. They have higher concentration of pigments (hiding) but not all are the same.

Another point is that elastomeric paints differ from latex paints cause they contain more binder than latex paints. The binder(resin) is a combination of acrylic and a high grade styrene for its waterproofing abilities - note: acrylic itself is not a durable waterproofing material. As can be seen in sun n rain elastomeric paints which fails miserably in our projects. To prove my point, try painting a portion of a hardiflex panel with sun n rain and when it dries- put a small amount of water and ill guarantee that it will blister and the paint will peel off.

Elastomeric paints are usually eggshell finish or gloss cause of its high binder content. So, when you see a flat elastomeric paint - then it is only a latex paint masked as an elastomeric paint like rain n shine which have a very flat finish. So i advise all to use Flexseal elastomeric paint which is proven to waterproof and finish any surface and is available in 60 colors.

hi, good day! share ko lang what i have came across before and tried it myself.

applying latex paint to wood? yes, it can be. apply first boysen flat wood enamel for the first coating. this will seal off the wood grains and nail heads (metals). let it dry for at least 24 hours. then apply boysen permacoat latex paint for the second and third coatings.

had tried this in our ceiling some 5 years ago and it is still ok until today.

Do you guys have any feedback on using 'National' brand gloss latex? My supplier offered it no me cheap.

I'm repainting an apartment, so pondado na yung walls and ceiling, but madumi yung mga walls - even stripsol didn't completely remove some stains made by pentel pen. It's a budget project, so the finish needn't be OC. But it has to be clean.
Thank!

What was not emphasized about Elastomeric as well as other paints is the importance of a primer coat or sealer. Paints need Primers or sealers so that the topcoat will have a layer of strong film they can adhere to. This will make the film hold stronger and allow it to do the work it was designed for; ex. waterproofing, weather seal and aesthetic coat. Most Elastomeric paints here in the Philippines don't have Sealers. This is why they fail to do their job. In the industrial world of waterproofing you will be surprised that most Elastomeric formulas have these primers. I just don't know why they think that w/ vertical applications they can do w/o them. Another good roof deck paint you can use is marine grade epoxy paint. Designed for harsh conditions even for acidic environment. My two cents..... Good luck.
