@Jay
You mentioned that the timing belt gave while the person was driving, what happens when that occurs, is there a loud sound or does the engine just stall and shut down?
you would be very happy if you don't hear much Moji. the louder the noise, the bigger the damage.
breaks in the belt will create different sounds depending on condition. running at high speed when it happens can be very dangerous. and damage will be extensive. breaking them at idle will cause little noise and damage...

Now that is scary..I wish i knew more about automotive stuff..sometimes i wish i took the automotive shop back in high school..

A late model Honda CRV was just towed to my home shop today. The suv has 140+ km and still with the original timing belt installed. Apparently it broke while owner was driving.
This could be messy and very expensive to fix. Hondas have Interference type engines. Belt breaks valves go too and what others we don't know yet as of now.
Please always be aware of your vehicles' Timing Belt replacement interval. Replacing the TB at the required manufacturer's interval is cheap insurance compared to the consequences if this maintenance sched is neglected or prolonged.
+1 these small little expensive items could lead to magnified expenses like overhauling or worse engine replacement when left unmaintained.
My Mazda 323's B6 DOHC engine is may not be as tuneable like the Hondas but the non-interference design gives it a little piece of mind whenever the dreadful belt tear happens.
will that consequences possible with other car models?say a toyota altis?
I believe the Altises also have non-interference design but better check the engine specs just to be sure as many cars have the same body but different engine specs, aside from the fact that it may also vary from different domestic markets. So if you have a stock one, better consult with your manual.
A car club is also a helpful venue to have more friends and gain more knowledge in terms of your car's maintenance. These fora are actually a goldmine of information since it would give you a real local feedback of what's happening and what to dos.
There is grupotoyota, altisclubzz and toyotaclubphil that you could join and have fun while learning.
broken timing belts will often result to damages in the valve train and even sa pistons whatever make or model.
timing belts are often recommended to be replaced when the 100,000km mark is reached... I always have mine replaced at 80,000 kms.
For non-interference engines, this would be an exception as the pistons won't be able to meet the valves in any way as it continues to go up and down while the valves are static. Worse thing that could happen is you'll stall and be towed.
Is the kms accumulated the only measure as when to replace the timing belt? Im just curious because our rav4 is a 2006 model but has only 13k+ kilometers on it..
Just like in engine oils, you need to consider the quality, time and range spent by your timing belt.
Your car's manual also has a maintenance schedule where it shows what things are to be check and/or tightened and/or replaced for every X kilometers.
Sometimes, the belts gets easily worn due to the material used. Usually cheap replacements would only do more harm as it will wear earlier and may stall you in an expected time and place. It would just cause you to pay for a tow, buy another belt and another labor charge which is more expensive than having an original(OEM) or a good Japan replacement used in the first place.
Also sometimes, incorrect setting of the tension bearing causes the belt grooves to slide/jump to another teeth and cause damage to the belt. There are many causes and the only way to prevent it is to have a periodical check even when it's not already due.
@Jay

I have not experienced it myself . What I tell my family members is that when driving and the car suddenly stalls without no apparent reason at all then just let it be. Push it to the side and don't try to start the engine anymore. In case it is a broken timing belt then the chances of other complications can probably be avoided.

@Jay
You mentioned that the timing belt gave while the person was driving, what happens when that occurs, is there a loud sound or does the engine just stall and shut down?
On an interference engine, valves and pistons occupy an area where they overlap. With a timing belt, they work in a harmonious way so as one of them occupies that overlapped area. When the belt snaps, the valves stops moving (this is because the cam shaft connected to the cam gear is not anymore rotating since there is no more belt that helps the gear and shaft to rotate) while the piston continues to go up and down (since it's connected to a different shaft - a crank shaft)
When that happens, a valve that is in extended position will continue to remain on that position while the piston extends upward to occupy the "overlapping" area, it would hit the valve(s).
These would lead to metals banging and bending in a very rapid motion and scare the sh1t out of anyone. Even when in idle, your engine is revving at around 800 RPMs so it is quite a handful event as well even when not in high speed.
In a non-interference engine, the valve and pistons don't meet in whatsoever condition. So when the belt snaps and the valves stucks, the piston won't hit any part of it. There will be just no combustion which will lead to stalling.

Here is a good visualization of what happens inside the engine...
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:4-Stroke-Engine.gifhttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a6/4-Stroke-Engine.gif
At Time#1 and 4 you could see the intake and outtake valves go down and occupy a space in the cylinder bore where the piston also occupies at some point in time. The valves go down when it is being pushed by the camlobe (egg shaped). The lobe is a part of the camshaft that rotates with the cam gears that is driven by the timing belt. When the belt snaps all of those stops so some of the valves freezes on the space that will soon occupied by the piston.
The piston on the other hand continues to move as it is connected to a crank shaft which is independent to the parts above. The cam shaft and crank shaft is connected though the timing belt so no belt or incorrect timing will not make the engine work as intended.

In a non-interference engine, the piston has a recess (piston/valve seat) where the valve could occupy without hitting the piston

Here is the poor CRV sitting outside in the rain across my garage. Autospeed mechanic is still busy so he might not be able to work on it till day after tomorrow. I'll try to shoot some pics when we pull the job. Towing alone from Quezon City to Pasay cost 3,100 pesos already.

WOW!!!very sound advice sir jarod and sir jayL.i do follow rhe periodic maintenance of the car,but this timing belt or chain is another matter, like moji says,i too should have studied these automotive courses hehehe,or another hobby ulit.on this timing chain/belt replacement, any advice or recommendation on where to go,sa kasa or to any reputable car care center?
I inquired at Honda Makati today about engine overhauling. I was informed that they do not do this but instead takes of the engine and sends it to the factory. They term I was given by the service adviser was Re Manufacturing. From the factory it's sent back to the dealer for re installation. Cost 50K up depending on the problem.

It depends on what your car brand is. Most would say that if your car is already out of warranty, it would be more practical to bring it to "reputable shops" rather than in a casa.
As I mentioned, car clubs provide a goldmin of information to all your car's needs ;)

Hi JayL,
How would you know if it's time na to change it? Baka kasi ito yung cause ng "tok" sound ko when I turn.
Remember I asked about it before and baka CV or rack and pinion but it seems hindi naman. The sound is produced when I step on the breaks then do a tight turn lalo na kung inclined or malubak. tried it without stepping on the brakes and no sound is produced.
Usually pag stabilizer link prob rattle noise yan.
I remember I had the same tok problem with my GSR before and it was Rack End causing it. However yours have a breaking issue so it's complicated. Probably the breaking gives it added pressure to cause the sound.
My GSR rack ends replaced.

Thanks Jay, I think the brake issue adds a factor on the sound it produced.
Btw, is Zafra still reliable and trustworthy? I asked this because I read a lot of negative stories about it and Cruven and Zee is more preferred.

I was thinking, is a table saw with a dado blade more favorable than using a router when making finger joints? Or are there other factors that I am missing?
violaine
01-05-2011, 06:32 PM
lets ask timber...my two cents is that...both can produce tight fitting finger joints...if you have a TS and a dado blade then go for it..if you just have the router then there is no other option.hehe
but it is always fulfilling if you can produce tight fitting finger joints on either tools..
but frankly, the way i look at it..i would always think twice which is easier...changing to a dado or changing to a straight bit?
i guess you are not missing anything at all...no one can say one is better than the other for this purpose alone as long as you can produce nice fitting finger joints...that is the bottom line after all.
the one who is missing a lot is the one who makes finger joints from just hand tools.
;)
Leigh Jig na lang.
Di ba pwede din sa finger joints ito.

finger joints are easier to do on the TS, cleaner too since the blade cuts axially which makes it better. router on the otherhand will be more prone to tear-out since the bit moves radially. both needs a reliable jig to make accurate joints...

Some questions on 1/4" shank router bits:
- is it mostly available locally?
- is it cheaper than the 1/2" or the price is almost the same?
- what brands are usually available?
- are there local shops aside from Binondo and mall hardwares that are good sources of router bits?

They have ez-cut router bits. they seem to be pretty well made. Lots of 1/2 and 1/4 " shanks

since you have access to Panda, best check them there since Hans tools get them from panda as well. well they do have to mark up the price...
1/4" shank router bits are generally cheaper than the 1/2" shank ones. but the 1/2" shanks offer better stability and less vibration and little to no chattering which 1/4" shank is prone to...

Went to this year's Philippine international guitar festival and saw some familiar faces and made a few friends and acquaintances. Those Thai guys are laid back btw. There's this 18 year old guitarist who made it to the last round of competition and he was very laissez-faire about it- we spent more time drinking at Dencio's than at the hall in the last day  (considering a lot of really good guitarists didn't make it, there's also this Indonesian who both of my guitarist friends admire- he made it through but made the mistake of drinking the local tap water and got sick lol.)
Talked a lot with this full time builder http://www.chantaguitar.blogspot.com/ who brought his 23rd guitar. http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0622.jpg As they say, "life happens/ happened" for me and i barely could spend time in my shop. *sigh* he's living my dream ^_^.
http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0626.jpg
Here's a Spanish Ramirez, it's made in 1952, and the finish ( lacquer? i forgot, definitely not shellac) has checkered. It's the guitar to have especially when Segovia was alive.
http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0628.jpg
Guitarist Tomonori Arai playing a Japanese Asturias. I couldn't even comprehend the price, but the miters sure are close to perfect, and the finish is impeccable.
http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0621.jpg
I was in love with the comfort model. A smaller shaped, shorter scale model. Looks rather adolescent/proportional isn't it? Notice the slight difference in the hue of the left and right side of the soundboard- it's bookmatched (came from same piece however there is some grain runout.) http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0617.jpg
costs an arm, a leg, and a kidney unfortunately.
http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0616.jpg
Lowest priced cedar topped model still cost 6 figures =/.

Friendly reminder to those who audition the guitars. The french polish (shellac) reacts to sweat http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0624.jpg
First prize of the competition is a Yuichi Imai with a carbon fiber case. I was taken aback by the satin looking french polish- so thin it isn't enough to completely smooth out the surface. So the top is free to vibrate anyway. http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0627.jpg

This is easy but deceiving as well.
The pattern of questions has a certain logic that would only result to a set of possible answers (in this case, multiples of 9). This set of numbers will have the same symbol next to it so for any combination that you try it knows just the exact symbol for you. Actually, it does not know the specific answer but it already know that your answer will always be on the multiples of 9.
So why do you get different symbols? Easy, for every round it just changes all the symbols for all the multiples of 9 and some random number just for diversion.
Try looking all the values of 9 multiples on the symbol chart and you would understand all the deception :D

@violane
I guess it can be done with pure hand tools (except for some drilling.) But realistically, i sure want to have 7 routers, 2 bandsaws among LOTS of jigs and specialized hand tools! There's this guy in a forum who sig goes something like: "anyone who makes a guitar under 5,000 dollars is a hero!" A set of East Indian Rosewood cost me 4.5K and spruce cost me 1.5-2K for AA and AAA grade... and time... I want an extra 36 hours each day please =/.
I've lent tools to someone before and the resulting guitar (his 3rd) was a bit blah... if the fret spacing deviates by .2mm the intonation will obviously be off.
I wasn't sure I'd pass by festival but glad i did. Bumped into someone i made a bone nut for his guitar years back and that was the start. Currently i don't have a guitar =), voluntarily gave mine to an italian nun who was nice enough to give me the DP and lathe (restoration still pending.)
My motto these days is... kung may sisimulan, may matatapos ^_^.

Doc, Jonathan,
sasama ba kayo sa sabado? Si Ben kaya?
@doc v.
Workign with hand tools doesn't mean working free-hand right? Sounds intimidating but it must be in the jig. And making sure the errors don't accumulate, each cut registers to one point etc. Commercially available jigs - essentially a well made miter box- are .02mm IIRC ( accurate 1/10th of allowed variance)from the ideal. One could use it eyes closed and be good =).
Jig for the rosette, jig for the binding, for side bending, and so on...
back to real life... i got to sleep, work tomorrow =).
Uhm... the gf's on her junior internship next school year, so siguradong mas may free time nako hah! ^_^

I might make an outfeed too soon, looking forward to your build. as for the scrollsaw, the back you mean is higher a bit? it should work fine, made my first ss table that way, the lid/top that covers the cabinet rocks forward and back to give me that angle. I made a second one (which I now use which is flat since dust do get in my stuff and it is low enough to be comfortable with full view of the cut.

funny if you look behind, we use to talk buying tools in hundreds of pesos, now thousands na... I reckon once you get exposed to good tools that are of very good quality, price becomes trivial. unless of course if price is too much :D
really, the buying power of this group is not to be belittled especially looking for quality...

Yes you are right and it will still grow. The value of good quality tools supersedes the initial cost in the long run. The way I look at it It's really a balancing act between cost and quality. Lot's of things to consider before being able to get the best bang for the buck. Not necessarily the cheapest nor the most expensive. That's why we take time to study first which tools to buy with our hard earned money.
After studying the dead blow design of the hammers it seems that PB Swiss uses washers while Wiha uses shot steel balls. I was leaning on the PB Swiss until I run into information that their DB hammers do have some small rebounds depending on the material it pounds. Wiha design is 100% deadblow so I chose it because it is what I need ( engine overhaul work ). If I will need small rebounds then maybe next time I'll go get a PB Swiss too.

First prize of the competition is a Yuichi Imai with a carbon fiber case. I was taken aback by the satin looking french polish- so thin it isn't enough to completely smooth out the surface. So the top is free to vibrate anyway. http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss1/owyn_band_so_long/Image0627.jpg

no worries Jon...
those who want to make a guitar, here (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=TheWoodWhisperer#p/u/34/1QOFKozWBjo) is a fun made video on how to make one...
As Doc V said. It's intimidating:) It's possible that what you built cannot be tuned:eek:
I just play. The most WW related thing I can do with my guitars is to sand down the saddle to adjust the string action.
My guitars. Yamaha, Valencia, Craftman

A guitar that can't be tuned? :(
Maybe these will be good to test it.

Jay, may secret stash ka ng mga tuners ha. Love that classic Boss tuner and also the Sabine.
These tuners actually reveal how badly spaced the frets are (intonation). With the guitars I mentioned...The open strings will be tuned using tuners but when you start pressing the frets specially the 5th or 12th fret, what is supposed to be an E or A note is a few cents off. Then it becomes unplayable:eek: Gawa uli:confused:
Never tried that fender tuner yet...Maybe next EB natin papakita mo at jamming na with jarod:cool: I use a computer and an Eno clip on tuner.

Ok will bring the Fender on the next EB and probably a guitar.
The smallest one is a Sabine also. It sticks by itself to the guitar body ( probably just near/ above the neck ) so you can easily see the lights.

I was at Mayon earlier today, went to buy a 1/4" collet for my Makita 3620. I realized they gave me a 6mm, so I went back later in the afternoon to exchange it.
The guy at the counter claimed that 6mm and 1/4" is the same, when I showed him an EZ cut bit with 1/4" shaft that wouldn't fit in the 6mm collect, he said that my bit must be 5/16" and kept insisting that 6mm and 1/4" is the same. He finally volunteered to get me a Makita 1/4" bit so I can see for myself. That's when he started scratching his head and figuring out his inventory list. Finally convinced, he got me a 1/4" collet. He was trying to get the exchange appove by the boss when it hit a snag, the boss was insisting that they are the same thing also. They finally checked the inventory I guess and got convinced themselves.
He kept insisting that they only sell routers with 1/4" and 1/2" collets.

^I do get to meet sellers with those attitude of "we know it better than you do". It's either their lazy to exchange it, worried that the boss might find out the blooper they made, too proud to admit their mistake or intended to give out sleeping items just to be converted into cash.
Glad to hear it ended well.

I'm stumped. Ok, small detail but really, what part of the bracket do you mount into the concrete wall- the long or stubby side? Ain't the longer one stronger? However it'll show more and look obstrusive.
Hula nyo? ;)

Gotta love hafele, the load rating is printed in the sticker.
I usually put the short side to the wall..but for really heavy load you might want to switch it.
jarod
03-02-2011, 08:44 PM
Generally the longer(thicker) one supports whole width of the shelf for its load as the short side is enough to hold itself of the wall.
Similar to how these are designed...

I believe Guad ordered one, it should be around or maybe about to arrive. Now while the Rikon cost a bit more than the Griz, it comes without the need of a riser block (unlike the griz). feature per feature the Rikon is ahead and for the Griz to be at par, you would have spent a bit more than the Rikon.

I might be mistaken but the price of the Rikon seems double that of the Griz so there must be something there for the Rkon.
None the less from the pic the Griz looks to be a well built band saw too.

the GO555 uses aluminum wheels and needs a riser block among others just to be close to the Rikon. Even then the depth of cut is still slightly lower than the Rikon. Like I said, buying the Grizzly GO555 would be more expensive than the Rikon when they get to the same level.
Another choice would be the GO555X for a better starting point. even then the Rikon would end having better value... IMO

bec highland had it for 799 pending shipping which will be emailed after the order. You can cancel or continue the transaction after the email. I cancelled since shipping costs USD250. will end up costing a tad more. and Amazon has been good to me when it comes to support.

G0555P arrived last year, $398 + 74. Long overdue for a review, but I've been swamped ... not getting enough quality time on the saw. I put it on casters. One of the six guide bushings (top rear) is defective, does not turn freely. Need to get it replaced. Still have to get good blades. No riser block. I am happy with 6" resaw capacity ... for now.
I hope this report is correct, as I don't want to have to get so many blades:

OK, noted. Shipping to PH was ~$130, same forwarder as in the forum online orders (I think). Shipping to forwarder was FedEx freight with no liftgate service included or needed by recipient. Box size 44 x 21 x 20, 210 lbs. So it looks like the Rikon is significantly heavier, although the Grizzly is quite heavy as it is. As reported in various installation accounts on the web, at least two people were needed to lift the saw onto its stand.

I hope to learn some insights about band saws from the forum. Up to now I really have not looked into it yet but probably would do so in the future for metal cutting purposes.
Just a quick question. Are woodworking and metal band saws different from each other or is the same tool but loaded with different blades?

blade and speed are the main factors that differnciate them Jay, the Rikon I ordered is capable of low speed which can cut non ferrous metals...

Trying to get an estimate for shipping this beast from the forwarder I use. Do you mind clarifying, Timb, the size? Amazon describes it as:
Item Dimensions
Length: 25 inches
Width: 30 inches
Height: 75 inches
Are the dimensions you mentioned the crate/box dimensions? Did it come in a pallet?
Thanks.

(Just posting something since it's been a slow posting the past few days.)
This happened a few weeks back, but man did I feel smart then. Not just smarter than a fifth grader- I was more genius than that- I outwitted some rats! (Inspired by a few youtube videos and webpages of course.)
The bucket trap method:
http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/6512/image0854.jpg
Some peanut butter slathered on the rolling cylinder. Cobbled together with just what i got, but i made sure it rolls so e-a-s-i-l-y. Mechanics of it seen on this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxwCp7Iskvs&feature=related
And for the bigger one, the classic rat trap.
http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/214/image0876.jpg
Used some pumpkins seeds as one vid suggested, and 2 free, unbaited ones leading to it to really reel him in, give him the taste for some and make him complacent. (These creatures are amazingly paranoid/wary.) I also bended the trigger catch just a bit to make it more sensitive. The trap was rather undersized for his size, but oh well it still worked.
The guy was freakin smart, i put some sticky paper on the usual route he took, and he never used that exit point again after i laid the trap. Also, i've put some racumin before which i'm sure he ate but he never died from it, though it worked on other ones.
It can't be helped that rats will ocassionally venture to my place in search of food, I'm near a field which i supect is where they nest. By coming to my place they'll be eliminated rather than proliferate. (I now made sure that they don't have access to dog food, my pantry has always been secure, and i make sure the kitchen sink is clean, no leftovers.)
===
Wish i had her setup though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxwCp7Iskvs&feature=related
(I don't enjoy killing- got qualms killing birds - but rats pee everywhere, they are a threat to cleanliness and therefore health. Yiiiiihhh!!!)

I stay away from Racumin, its overprice piece of junk, the rats seems to only get bigger with it. Try using zinc phospide, I get it from Cartimar, Mapecon or agricultural stores. But nothing beats a hungry cat.
