9 feet long boards for the top

and 7 ft. boards for the feet...

I certainly hope that the yield would be 1 1/2" but 1 1/4" would be acceptable... so yes, my machines and powertools will get worked out soon... this would be my biggest build to date both in size and cost... pray for me... :p

i wonder what species of wood you have for the projectg but im sure the beauty lies beneath.
may the force be with you!
Those sure look rough and needs to be milled sir Timb. So now you have some means to tune the makita planer, but say, how do you go about sharpening the planer knives again? From net prices, the makita sharpener 9820-2 is even more expensive than a jet thicknesser!

you can build a jig that holds the blades at the specified angle and run the stone over them, sharpening is done on two blades at once...
Violaine, those are Mahogany from Cebu...
Nice project Timber. What kind of joinery are you planning to use?
Not only will your tools get a workout but your back will too!

Not only will your tools get a workout but your back will too!
joinery isn't much, the legs will have a half recess that would fit the other half to form the "+" shape.
joining the top, nothing spectacular too, it is designed to be removable and will not be attached other than guides or stops to hold it in place...
as for the back, buying and shipping the wood alone killed my back. each piece weighs no less than 30kls.
Actually bro I am wondering how you will join planks together to make the necessary widths? Dowels? Biscuits? T&G? Also, IIRC you don't have a jointer yet so how are you going to get them square?
One thing I wish I had when manhandling such big pieces is a set of nice leather gloves. I saw some before at ACE in Rockwell but did not appreciate them enough then (P600). Now I don't get to go there and have yet to find something at par.

will make do with the thicknesser for now, a jig would do the jointing for me, and a portable planner will speed up handplane work. not that process will make my arms grow like popeye :p
IMHO I think your router table would be a better solution but it will be interesting to hear how the jig goes.

I can't use the rt unless I get some semblance of the woods flatness. so before I start joining, I got to start getting a flat side first.... besides, joining a 9 foot stock on the rt seems very difficult just thinking of controlling the sheer weight alone.
I guess you'll be making a tray to get initial flat side. I'd also like to see one of those. I never needed to do this because I almost always bend the wood anyway.
Yeah 9 feet is pretty long. Even if the mahogany is stiff having it laying on its wide side might allow it to still bend from its own weight ... but if mahogany is as stiff as yakal maybe not. A horizontal RT would be better in this case. Another reason I'm not to thrilled with jointing with a thickness planer is that there is that the cutting head is exposed quite a bit.
timber715
06-05-2010, 07:37 AM
well the simplest I have considered is using a handheld power planner to get one side as close to flat as possible, the with a bed run it through the thicknesser.
Or you could invite the bro with the hand planes :) I have a power planer, one of the first things I bought, regrettably, but do not like using ... hmmm where is that thing anyway.
Another way is that workbench flattening technique.
Now we'll see how good the Makita thicknesser blades really are.

yan ang tinatawag na bayanihan! hehehe
with the final thickness of 1 1/2 or 1 1/4", i can only join those boards butted against each other...and lots of pipe clamps.
too heavy even on a molder for t&g.
a reliable glue is a must.
i hope titebond would be available locally.
for now lets be contented with what is available..i.e. elmers carpenters glue.

hmm i use pioneer. Mainly due to convenience. LArge squeeze bottle. seems ok... Elmer's is too runny for me. And stickwell is well... too sticky.. :)
Butt jointing seems ok as long as wood does shrink or swell.. sealing a must

acclimatizing the wood till Tuesday, that should give me time to comple my other builds and jigs that I will use... I might look to use dowels for jointing this just to provide extra support...

the court cleared around3pm which gave me some time to work. Jay suggested a laser guide help me square up the boards. Well Bosch (c/o Golden) lent me a GLL 2-50 line laser.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/X0528.jpg
tried to locate the straightest path that can offer me the biggest yield.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/X0529.jpg
and with the Bosch power planner, I started cutting the material removing more in the high spots as needed.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/X0530.jpg
not perfect, but very close. the cut is made only on one edge of the wood and with a no.5 Stanley scrub plane, I level it across... and I have a volunteer too...

exactly my concern at the moment Chisel, these boards are 9ft long and making a bed allows me 8ft long using a single piece of ply or mdf. though my intention was to make a torsion box bed to make it stiff and joint an extension to fit my needs.
well, I would like to try this first, if it doesn't give me the results I want, I will be off to build that torsion bed... I just don't want to spend more time building another jig at this time, lots of work is needed for the raw stock (though I know it could make my life so much easier once it is set up). making that bed requires accuracy in all aspects, otherwise it is pointless to make it... kaya, wala pa akong ginawa... :p
High tech! Were you able to finish all the boards?

What's the target table top thickness now Timb?
so far I hope I can maximize at 1 3/4" but realistic would be 1 5/8", any of which is better than 1 1/2" which was my primary target.
now, If only I can get a biscuit cutter or maybe borrow one from Chisel...
timber715
06-23-2010, 12:39 AM
got one side straightened using a cs and a straight guide... tomorrow, I will square the last side with the TS. not perfect but I believe it would be very close. so I would need to start jointing, and without a biscuit joiner I decide I would use dowels. I start making a dowel jig that I can use...

I'm thinking that probably the use of dowels will make the jointed table top stronger compared to using biscuits. I might be wrong.

I'm thinking that probably the use of dowels will make the jointed table top stronger compared to using biscuits. I might be wrong.
biscuits are there for guide use only and offers little strength, but dowels do add strength that can rival tenons of the same dimensions... thus, it is much better to use, but not as easy as a biscuit to align...
Considering the size of the table top as well as it's thickness then I would choose dowels.
timber715
06-24-2010, 12:14 AM
brought the 4100 to the site and cut the last side to make the stocks square. they were not perfect but very close that a Stanley no. 7 could do the trick... and the engineering square is a must! that is if you want a flat top...

the rest of the bunch waiting to get glued, but still a lot of work to get then tight fitting...

hehehe, huhuhu. oo... ;)
but I can clamp three stocks with what I have. so what I plan to do is clamp 3 boards on one end and the other 3 in another stage. that way I can use less clamps to put them together and the glued boards will act as cauls... ;);)
How will you do final clamping when you assemble the whole table top?

well with the dowels to guide them in place, plus making sure that the joints are square, I feel confident I can have this done with as little as 4 clamps. got two 6ft pipe clamps and two showa 54" clamps... maybe one or two more will do... hehehe reason enough to buy new clamps :p

I plan to make an office table inspired by the traditional workbench design and making panels flat would be a great skill for that ... just dont know what my co workers will say... or my boss... hahaha

Yes, Ben, a router jig should work off the bat. thought about it too, but set up could be a pain with the enormity of my build.
you already got the everything you need (jointer, thicknesser, skill and knowledge) you don't need a router jig imho...

do you have a no.4(smoother)? if you do, bring it, this is a great time to learn some tricks. work isn't demanding anymore like today. those who want to come... come. those who need sharpening, advise me early so I can bring mine.
sorry sir wala pa kong hand plane na kahit ano. I dont know what to get pa. hehehe the only planer i have is the "yellow" one. :p

all was ok until I noticed under the light that some portion took stain more than some parts.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1706-2.jpg
after giving it four hours to dry a bit I used a scrubbing pad and spread the stain evenly, I am very pleased with the result so far and the portion with less stain will be evened out once a primary finish is applied and glazed... bukas naman yun.
Isn't that the common problem with mahogany? It stains unevenly.. how come you did not use sanding sealer first before staining?
timber715
07-06-2010, 12:40 AM
I wanted two layers of stain to begin with so it would be deeper and darker. So having an initial stain will give me the luster I seek with the stain over the sealer will be there to make it slightly darker and even...
Oh ok..is the nice grain still noticeable with the dark stain?
timber715
07-06-2010, 12:58 AM
very nice Moji, very nice...
I already want to see it again in person..i like the shade of the stain..couple that with the nice grain..it would probably look awesome when finished..
I was just wondering about work sequence. I was with the idea that all woodworking should be done before starting the finishing work. Timber must have a very good reason to start applying finish on the top before starting work on the legs.

the top is a totally different piece, so finishing it is the correct thing to do since it will receive more attention in finishing than the legs. Way more.
Moji, let me know when you can visit, best if you can pass by bukas before I start sealing it... the trick about scrubbing pad is something I can tell you and you can feel.
I don't think i can pass by there anytime this week..maybe you can teach me the scrubbing pad technique when you do the legs..

Ben,
the glaze is applied from the can, I use Ace stains and am very happy with them. I have tried 3 others and even though this one cost more, I prefer it over others.
Moji, thanks bro. it should work for poly and water with soap is highly needed specially with poly.

Your poly looks great! With such a large surface area im impressed that there are little air bubbles.
How do you prevent bubbles normally present when brushing on poly?
timber715
07-09-2010, 12:00 AM
I watch them with a tiger eye Moji, I think it scares the bubbles away... :p
Frankly, I just brush it on with the small bubbles and the second or third strokes burst them away. I am not very particular at this point since most of this will be sanded away... again...
three more coats and the same steps... haaay :p

I never thought that it would come down to this finish. I sometimes gaze on my dining table how it was finished and now I know. Thought that it was finished with a matte varnish (if such exists) as most sample poly coats I see on hardware are so d@rn shiny and thick.

timber715
07-10-2010, 01:34 AM
When sanding the poly, is it not critical to sand it down flat before adding the next coat?
no, it isn't critical. I planned this process bec I wanted most of the open grain to be filled. hence the thick fist coat. and to make sure it gets good coverage I flooded some parts, thats why I had to go to this step. if your materials is perfect already, you can go straight to thinned poly and apply as preferred...
Oh ok. of all the finishes, brushed on poly is the hardest to apply for me. I can never get it smooth and defect free.
timber715
07-10-2010, 02:09 AM
Oh ok. of all the finishes, brushed on poly is the hardest to apply for me. I can never get it smooth and defect free.
I reckon, this would be easier and better sprayed. and since you are better than me at spraying paint, I think you should give it another try...
My only concern with spraying poly is it dries slow..im afraid i might make the garage all sticky with poly overspray..
timber715
07-10-2010, 02:22 AM
cover the floor with newspaper, as for drying time, I guess the more thinner you use the faster it dries. now the biggest concern imho is that if you don't have an enclosed area from dust and air circulation is contamination while drying.
this is what I did to prevent people from touching it out of curiosity or lack of care...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0068.jpg
timber715
07-10-2010, 02:23 AM
you should give it clean space for 4 hours for drying pala just to be sure...
That's another concern..the garage is open air hehehe..my poly would be all furry by the time it dries.
timber715
07-10-2010, 02:29 AM
that is correct, hence you should make or look for a makeshift tent to cover your project while finish dries...

Oh you sprayed poly? How was the process? What consistency did you use?
Your table top looks great..from the reflection wala na yung alon. Good job!

thinned the poly about 10 to 15% until the flow was considerably fluid. like you said "milk consistency". the waves were caused by the brush marks and was sanded using 320, 400 and 600 grit. there are still light dust and an insect landed during the night (asar). will probably lightly sand again and was advised to thin poly 75% to leave a very thin final coat which will not bubble and will self level well...
Don't you just hate it when insects make the newly painted finish their landing pad? Always have that problem..badtrip pa pag tinanggal mo tapos naiwan yung mga legs and wings hehe

sir timber, what kind of paint thinner did you used?is it the ordinary paint thinner, branded,or is it the mineral spirit type?i'm asking, kasi i think there is a particular or type of thinner or reducer that we might use on the type of finish we are using...censya na sir, hindi kita natawgan, been very busy this weekend, maybe later tonight..

jonathan, I am using regular paint thinner at the moment and finding good success with them. Splash ang brand iirc...
today I started making the stops for the legs...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0161.jpg
it will be stained and finished and glued to the bottom part of the top to located and lock the legs in place. the chamfers and roundovers provide a means of slide to center the legs during mounting...

I see you brought out your valuable mineral spirits! Was the difference noticeable?
You were already able to buy filters?
Ang Pogi.
How about the electricals ? I thought there would be built in connections.

hehehe, di naman ako ganun katanda para matawag na manong. hehehe, the project is something you can do if you start and practice. you just have to start building stuff from small things. I always recommend making boxes. ako din gusto ko ng tolls, para may regular income ako :p... hahahaha
Timb what was the final thickness of the table top?

Astig talaga yun mga Showa bar clamps. Come to think about it the price of Pony pipe clamps w/ the pipes is expensive also .. better to add some more and get the Showas.
in fact Jay, the Showa will come out cheaper than the Ponies and pipes depending on the length... that was my consideration too before buying them, and glad I did because these clamps are real bears and very easy to use...
One thing to note with the Showa t-bar clamps is that the actual capacity may be less than the named capacity. For example, the 48" clamp opens to 47-11/16" only.
If you need 48" opening, you have to get the next size clamp, 54".
