Actually, I've been browsing through different Japan Surplus shops. They sell office and home furniture import from Japan and much more durable than the one you see at SM. Try to visit one, that where I got my new bookshelf that doesn't chip-off even after being affected by flood.

There's 2 along Sucat Parañaque (one sells outdoor tools and gardening equipment) and one inside BF Homes where I bought my bookshelf. Try to search nearby your location, Australian surplus would be a good option as well.

It really should work and you can do everything by yourself. I did the same when i was buying used furniture and sewed new covers for it. As a results it looked like new one. Just a great way to renew your home interior. As for equipment for sewing, https://www.sewinginsider.com/ look the best for me nowadays.
