  • Arc Welder for Metal Fabrication Shop

    Hi Guys..

I'm a new member and I found your site via Google while searching for good arc welders since I am 0 when it comes to welding. My back ground is mostly IT and Telecoms and recently we decided to put up a family business (metal works / fabrication) and I was assigned to purchase the tools like the one mentioned. I was about to pick the popular US brands but I came upon you guys and I was wondering if you can share a thing or two from your expertise any suggestions on the machine that I should buy considering that its use will be a little more heavy duty. Again I thank you for any information that you can share since every insights from experts like you counts. Marami salamat po.. =)

I am not an expert but your needs depend on the kind of metal including the thickness that you will be working on.
So maybe you can tell us what kind of product your business will be dealing with.

Arc welder is the cheapest and probably the most basic in terms of operation.
But there a few types of arc welders and thousands of brands out there.

For a hobbyist like me, I use the ordinary 170amp AC welder. Some people use the DC welder which is said to be easier to use.

Others have ventured into MIG welding.

One thing for sure is that you need a high amp welder if it is going to be used for metal fab business. Yamato brand is quite popular. You have probably seen this brand in many shops.

        Hi figgarho,

First of all, welcome to the forum and we are glad you chanced upon us and could be of help to you.
We have a MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS at the lower portion of the index page so please don't forget to share more info about yourself, your interests or hobbies perhaps, we'd like to know you more as a new member of PHM community ! Thanks

Now to answer your query, locally there are various brands of welders available in the market now,
there is nothing wrong in buying them here though these weld machine are imports from China or Taiwan, Korea or Japan. You just have to know what will work for you best in your intended business. If the applications will be more on the heavy duty use, IMHO, better get the 250 amp or 300 amp welder machine. You can choose between an AC welder or DC Inverter welder machine. Buying locally of the said machines are much cheaper than than buying it abroad as in the US but of course if you can afford to spend for it plus shipping charges and taxes, then why not.

As fourtheboys96 said, the YAMATO brand of AC welders are very popular in our country, its easy to use and fairly very affordable and have proven its worth for so many years. There are still other brands out there you can choose from. RILON and HiTronic brand of welders are also great machines but deals mostly with DC Inverters. You can do research as well on other brands like CRESTON, DAIDEN, MITSUDEN, ETC.

        Hope this helps !!

thank you very much guys for sharing your knowledge in this field.. i heard lots of good feedbacks about yamato and I plan to purchase one of this.. I guess I'll hang out here more often since your previous threads are most helpful for newbies like me.. I have been reading most of them and they are really very informative with matching visuals on some.. may I ask also your opinion regarding Shinsetsu brand of inverter welders. I went around to canvas and I found this in Maquiling Builders. They said its a Korean brand and the price is just the same as Yamato with a difference in warranty. They are offering it at 6 mos on parts and lifetime in service. Its a bit attractive since inverter types have more complex electronics than the transformer types I assume and the warranty can come handy if ever the welder breaks..

Maquiling which means you are either from LB or Calamba. Stick to the brands mentioned here and you will be fine. Yamato also has an inverter arc welder the advantage of which is you can ask for a first hand experience about the product.

              figgarho,

Sorry bro but I am not familiar with this Shinsetsu brand of welders, I have been searching the net for any information about this welder but can't get any.

May I just suggests before you buy this welder, to check out the YAMATO 300 amp DC Inverter , this is a new import by our favorite supplier of our 200 amp DC Inverter. I think their introductory price for this is Php 13,500.00, with 6 months warranty and guaranteed after sales service from Industrialsupply 143, you might even get a discount being a member of PHM forum. Just get in touch with JosephS, the sales marketing guy. Contact #s : 0917-794-9638 (Globe) , 0920-932-9874 (Smart) , and their land line : 02-217-9724.

Re: Arc Welder for Metal Fabrication Shop

Putting up shop.... First thing to consider other than popularity is dependability or popular because of their outstanding performance. You do not want your popular machine bogging down when you have deadlines. You would probably want something you can depend on.
Dependable machine often cost more and they get known because of their performance over the years and used by professionals in the same field.
Now getting back to your shop, how good a shop do you plan to create?
Bugel, a member here with quite a very good welding hand could probably give you very good suggestions or what he wants if he is to put up his own shop with a budget to use.....

thanks for accepting my request to join the group. i am going to purchase a new welding machine. i have searched lazada and came up with these three IGBTs. the welding machine will be used for DIYs only and not for business purposes.

New Powerhouse Evolution 200A Portable Inverter Welding Machine with 200grams Welding Rod (100% Copper)
                    - Php 4.799.00 + 155 shipping

New Yamato 200A Digital Inverter IGBT Arc Welding Machine New Edition with 1kg Welding Rods and Cow Hide Leather Welding Gloves
                    - Php 4,789.00 + 155.00 shipping

New Yamato 300A Digital Inverter IGBT Arc Welding Machine New Edition
                    - Pho 5,609.00 + 155 shipping

from three IGBTs, which one will you recommend?

Gigatools seller told me that Powerhouse is a better option than Yamato since it was tested and was approved by the Philippine government when they use the inverter welding machine in their projects. but back reading other topics, it was mostly suggested to go for a higher amperage welding machine at 300A. please advise. i know this has been an going topic here in the forum. i am only asking advised on the three IGBTs i posted.

                    Thanks

The YAMATO brand particularly the DC IGBT arc machine has been discussed here
in the forum of its pros and cons in the past years or so and as time would past, so sad
to say it seems that poor performance in terms of quality would start to show in the long
run. diodes inside would easily burn out in prolong use, fan at the back side would start to
squeak or nor ran at all or the machine will bog down due to some unknown reason/s.
So we learn from experience and look for another good brand, a heavy duty dependable
one and as for me I focused my attention on the HiTronic brand, made some research
about its quality, specs, manufacturer and found out its made by RILAND Inds. makers of
Riland, Rilon, and HiTronic welding machines. Now I am using the HiTronic Arc 300 amp
Inverter machine and no regrets at all of my purchase.

You dont need a 300A welding machine kung for hobby lang. 200A is enough IMO. Just follow use it within the duty cycle.
