I was just wondering why few people order stuff like these. Lots of sale on amazon on good quality safety stuff if one looks around. There was a time when I did'nt care too until I got bitten by a severe hand allergy doing DIY. It took a long time to cure ( = agony ) and quite expensive too. Now SYMBO took it to the next level and insists that I wear full cover alls and work boots too when welding.... etc. I laugh but deep down inside me I know she has a point in asking me to do so.

This is one area where being Penny Wise and Pound Foolish sucks Big Time.

Please do post your safety stuff so we can learn from each other and hopefully drive consciousness further in this area.

Take for example work gloves. Lots of cheap ones I tried before but in my experience I found the good quality ones last longer and feel more comfortable to use.

Yes I do but I doubt if it will work during summer time. The issue came out when I weld using shorts and sando. One gets sun burned when skin is exposed to the welding arc ( itchy afterwards ).

Probably cotton long sleeves and a welding apron will be best during summer.

Baka naman the wife just doesn't want the girl neighbors watching you in your sexy and sweaty shorts and sando while welding

May asim pa pala si manong Jay!

To the metal workers here, aside from the safety gear, has anyone gotten tetanus shots? I would think that is a small expense to pay since rusty metal is usually being handled and getting tetanus is a real concern.

                    hay...

really too many misconceptions about tetanus in this age of the internet...

fact is...the organism causing tetanus lives deep in the soil where oxygen is almost zero..and it (Clostridium tetani) dies once exposed to air...remember that the air we breath contains only 21% of oxygen, that amount can already kill the organism.

this very fact should keep you informed that when you cut yourself with wood splinter while planing, kitchen knife, some barbed wire you wont get tetanus!

and tetanus vaccination will last for at least 10 years!

first time mothers are given 3 doses for the whole pregnancy but that is passe...since most childbirths are occuring in a hospital..but of course we hear instances when a pregnant delivers a baby not in the usual places. i.e. the hospital or lying-in clinic but odds of places like airplanes, bus etc and in this case, we cannot be assured of the sterility of objects use by heroics in those situations. so prevention is still the best.

but i would not recommend you to have a tetanus shot every two years for prevention...and neither you need it after ten years from the last dose after a "clean" wound.

all you need is soap (any soap!) and water..kung wala soap, just water...this is also true for animal bites as first thing to do.

id rather promote cervical cancer vaccination for your SWMBO's than getting tetanus shots for no reason! yes tetanus shot is cheap..around 50-100 bucks..but you need to pay the doctor's and nurse's fee and the clinic fee and your transpo/gasoline...etc...besides..who likes a needle prick?!

btw...recent theory suggests that cervical cancer vaccine MIGHT also work for the prevention of mouth cancers due mostly to cigarette smoking and HPV (human papilloma virus) since the virus is at least are related but of different (but maybe the same) strains.

hindi lang pang SWMBO, para sa boys din pala...lalo na yung mga nag iismoke..smoking and human papilloma virus are synergistic in action..meaning to say...they work in complement for mutation to occur and so is cancer development.

                              Re: Workshop Safety Work Wears

                              @moji,

technically, these bacteria dies out in dry environment (metal bars etc)...they love a damp environment but not wet and live below the surface where oxygen is nil or almost zero..and soil is what i am talking about..because in soil, there are lots of living organisms...and for all we know, bacteria are decomposers.

so rusty metals exposed to air wont harbor with them these bacteria..

the tetanus bacteria produces a toxin causing the tetanus...characterized by violent spasms of the muscles and unless patients are treated they die due to spasms of the respiratory muscles...the violent spasms are so painful btw..and can be triggered by noise or even cold air and that is why patients with tetanus are confined ideally in enclosed rooms...i remember when i was rotating at san lazaro hospital, a simple loud hand clapping can trigger the spasms!

yes when exposed to air these bacteria die out but not instantaneously and even if they die and the toxin is ready and already formed, you can still get tetanus.

whats important to ask is...is there a chance the wound was contaminated by SOIL? if yes..give the tetanus toxoid.

                              hope this helps.
