Please correct me if I'm wrong- I'm referring to the square boards for ceilings that are used in offices, with aluminum frames(?).
Anyway, we're moving our office, and we need to do some ceiling work. Just wondering if it's cheaper to use acoustic board or gypsum board.
Also got me wondering why a lot of offices I've seen use acoustic board. What are the advantages?
Re: Acoustic board?
its a BIT cheaper to use gypsum board, as opposed to grid type acoustic board ceiling.
advantage of using acoustic board for ceiling is that it prevents sound from echoing back and forth from floor to ceiling.

does this price comparison include the steel framing? as i understand acoustic board is used with 'drop ceilings', resting on a t channel, while gypsum board is screwed to a steel furring.
i was considering the pros and cons of both for my current project, then chose gypsum.

Re: Acoustic board?
the advantage of using acoustic board in offices(especially rented space/not permanent tenant ) asides from sound proofing is that its easy to install/lay additional electrical wirings/fixtures,.. etc.
Re: Acoustic board?
yep, all items considered, including the painting works if you choose to use gypsum board. thats why it is just a bit cheaper kasi with acoustic you frame then drop in the accoustic boards, with gypsum, you frame, screw boards, tape, putty, sand then paint

Re: Acoustic board?
@ ernie
thanks for the tip. i assume acoustic board and t channel can be painted prior to installation if needed.
i just may switch to acoustic board, depending on my deadlines. i was advised that even transporting gypsum board to the worksite would be tricky.

Re: Acoustic board?
^not ideal to paint over those acoustic ceiling boards a.k.a mineral boards bec paint will just clog up the pores thereby reducing it's sound absorbing properties. But for the t-rack you can paint over it with the color you want since it comes in white. Recent developments that aside from those mineral boards that comes only in white color you can use polyester board that comes in different color and has better thermal and sound insulation, also a lot more expensive huhuhu

@ricky
so that's the downside. unpainted the acoustic board gives the institutional look. 🙁

Yup, plus if you paint it with the use of roller or brush mas pangit pa. So some uses spray but then again it greatly minimizes sound absorption.

Good point on the transportation of gypsum board.
Another advantage of acoustic board is you can replace small portions at a time (example: in case of water leak from upper floor), but yeah, it does give that outdated "institutional look".
Re: Acoustic board?
