i really don't like tiles in the bathroom. can you suggest other materials that can be used in the bathroom. i was thinking of wood and/or concrete.
*if wood, what wood is best for the bathroom?
*if concrete, is it okay to use plain concrete in the bathroom for the sink, floor, shower? are their special applications that have to be done? i was thinking that this would be cheaper than installing/using tiles in the bathroom.
kindly give suggestions. thanks.
Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
Yeah what a unique bathroom would that be, not using tiles. in fact I could use that idea myself. Molave is a hardwood that can resist moisture.
Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
hi. i just want to revive this post. do any of you know a company that specializes in concrete flooring / concrete works. i want to avoid using tiles in the bathroom and kitchen countertops. thanks.
Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom

Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
This would be a very small job for a contractor. If you were to do it yourself, it might be a good idea to put water-proofer in the mix, and then treat the floor of the bathroom with an appropriate paint.
Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
ayaw mo ng tiles, How about granite slab? o Synthetic granite?
Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
do you think the regular karpentero or workers would know how to do it?
the reason why i like concrete is na-andun na kasi yun concrete eh. underneath all the tiles is the concrete already. it's supposed to be cheaper (no more tiles and grout). maintenance is also easier. no need to worry about grout lines turning black.

yeah, its just a bathroom...
lagyan mo na lang ng colored cement, mixed media..experiment mo na lang..pati walls!
tapos, yung ceiling, diffuser plastic lang..para maliwanag...ganda nun!
lagyan mo pa ng small bamboo plants sa loob...kung malaki pa ang space, lagyan mo ng bench made of some local hardwood like yakal, molave, or kamagong...

Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
i saw a US house with a tile less bathroom. iirc it had wood floors, a fiberglass shower enclosure, and wallpapered walls.
it'll be tricky to not use bare concrete and yet not have an 'outhouse' look, but wood or even faux wood's seems more expensive than tile. palo china's cheap and water resistant - but is bukbok and mold prone. granite and stainless is nice but not frugal. laminate's an option, but will the glue stand up to the damp? epoxy paint's another option but i'm not sure if it lasts long enough. given the long drying time.
btw the concrete floor usually has two layers. the slab gets waterproofed, then the topping goes over it. whatever you do, don't skimp on the waterproofing.
good luck:)

Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
If you've been to Sonya's Garden or one of those eclectic Pinoy bed&breakfasts, seem like a shower floor of loose river stones/pebbles is in fashion. Looks nice and feels good on your feet as you take a shower. But must be hell to maintain. Just think about how you remove all the hair!
There's a company in MC Home Depot who does made-to-measure synthetic floors made of powdered marble then glued up with some composite concoction. I had them do a tub and our master's sink. So far so good.
For the walls, if you use wood, make sure you apply epoxy resin. It looks like varnish but seals the wood so it's waterproof. Floors would be ok too but make sure you put a layer of fiberglass to strengthen it.

Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
i've seen the showers of sonya's (nag-overnight na ako doon). ayoko nun kasi mahirap ang maintenance. you are correct about the hair. it all looks nice, but maintenance-wise, pamatay. i'm looking at pictures of concrete floors and counterops on the internet. ganda-ganda. i hope there's a company here in the philippines that specializes in these things kahit for small jobs lang.

thanks!!!:D i often see in US magazines bathrooms with wooden floors. a lot actually. in the philippines, i have never seen pictures of houses with bathrooms that have wooden floors.
Re: don't like tiles in the bathroom
my powder room is not properly squared so putting tiles would surely enhance the imperfection... what i did was just poured concrete on it, sanded it and polished it several times....then ealed it with poly.
it produced great results for my modern industrial house.
goodluck!
