Hi again

What is the best material to fill the metal framing on a Hardiflex wall for soundproofing?

A guy from the Hardiflex store suggested that I go to Soler and look for a fiber-like material. I have no idea what I will be looking for.

I am very open to suggestions right now, cos I will have my carpenter start working on this late next week.

What is also the best material to soundproof French windows?

Thanks in advance for your help!

D

It could be the rockwool that is used for audio.

Where can I buy this material?

Do you know where I can find this material in Cavite?

Thanks Jarod!

I believe this is available in Binondo, as usual. Let's just wait for the Binondo boys to chime in where exactly to find that item.

Re: Filling for Hardiflex wall and soundproofing

For where to buy mineral wool...

Igros Marketing
Philippine Insulation Company
VCF Insulation and Trading
etc.

available in various thicknesses (e.g., 25, 30, 50 mm),
dimensions (0.6 x 1.2 m board, 0.6 x 5 m blanket),
densities (e.g., 50, 60, 80, 100 kg/cu.m),
and linings (e.g., foil on 0, 1, 2 sides).

As for best material, try web search for 'sound absorption coefficient', e.g.,
http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm

I was under the impression that the higher the mass (= density x volume), the better. So, if possible, solid concrete or lead. I haven't checked if the absorption data supports this though.

Thanks for posting the list of companies and comparisons, Guad! I haven't tried calling those companies yet.

I found a store in MC Home Depot and they sell Rockwool. Unfortunately, they sell it per roll (18M) at P5700. They don't want to sell it per meter though 🙁 Does anyone here know how much they cost in Manila?

Does anyone know what the best way to soundproof a french window?

I was able to buy rock wool per meter in one of of the shops in MC (the one at the corner of Meralco and Ortigas Avenues). Not in MC, but in one of the stores in the same building.

How much do you need? I think I have some left-overs.

Re: Filling for Hardiflex wall and soundproofing

Igros had (still has?) an outlet at MCHD Ortigas. Is that the one visited? If so, it should be possible to get any of their rockwool offerings there, but by order only with pickup another day, since there is minimal stock in that small store. Or you could just go to their Cubao warehouse.

The rockwool from VCF (Cubao) looked a little better than from Igros, but slightly more expensive. Brand ABM/CSR (China) or Roxul (Thailand).

Supposedly, Philippine Insulation Company (Paranaque) is cheapest?

Hi Joey! Sorry for the late reply. I will have to ask my carpenter how much rockwool will fill the metal frame. My orders will come in tomorrow, I am not sure if my carpenter will be able to get the metal framing up tomorrow though.

I will keep you posted, maybe on Saturday.

Thanks!

Re: Filling for Hardiflex wall and soundproofing

Guys, i'm not sure if may effect pa din ang rockwool when sandwiched between hard boards. Rockwool is a sound absorber for high to midlow frequencies. The hard board reflects those frequencies bago pa ubabot sa rockwool.

Huli man daw at magaling, huli pa rin.

The receipt for the rockwool I purchased suddenly surfaced. Store name is IMC Traders Depot, phone 02-6830865.

Now I'm not sure if I was able to buy it on a per meter basis. The receipt says:
1 roll Rockwool Insulation (bare) 25mm x 80KG x .6m x 5m PHP954.50

Re: Filling for Hardiflex wall and soundproofing

Are "fillings" really necessary for Hardiflex boards? This is my first time to use Hardiflex and I would also like to "sound proof" rooms in the house. Well, not really to keep things quiet, but good enough so that loud voices cannot be heard in between rooms. 😉

A friend of mine suggested inserting styropor/styrofoam boards in between as an alternative to fiber/wool; would this do the trick? Is this also safe? I am wary of a potential electrical problem + stryrofoam combination.

Styropor/styrofoam burns (at least the ones that I played with when i was a kid). Its not a good idea to put this near the electricals. I don't know if they have fire-proof styro nowadays.
