Gypsum boards have been around longer than cement boards, they both have their pros and cons. Gypsum boards are versatile and workable ceiling board....just don't get them wet. HTH!

wow, lots of useful information from the pros. how do you prevent the hardiflex or plywood ceiling from showing the joints,where one board is connected to the other (I don't know the technical term), ? In large ceiling parang may tic-tac toe sa taas, specially white ceilings in unused rooms ? Sometimes the ceiling even droops in some places. Salamat po

Had the same problem. It is called ghosting or thermal tracking where the joists on the ceiling became visible as shadow marks. I was told that could be of several causes: humidity, difference in inner/outer ceiling temperatures and/or soot/dust sources. After repainting, i added insulation inside the ceiling. By the way, the painter used a gray colored primer then finished it with white paint. This was done a year ago.

The ceiling in our office was redone by the contractor because the joints showed. I don't think it is practical to expect to remove such so it might just be better to design the joints into the design.

There is an epoxy based putty specifically designed for fiber cement boards, they are made by pioneer. I have tried it with gypsum mesh tape and so far so good.

Are Hardiflex really advisable for ceiling use? Many say that they fall off in time due to loose nail holes which enlarge when hardinail are overdriven. Please advise.

Related to this query I will be using hardiflex boards for the first time, I would like to ask how dependable are they and for around 100 boards how many boxes of hardiflex nails do I need?

Gypsum boards has been around for decades already. It is not actually state of the art. It's a good ceiling material, a bit heavy but good all around. Just be wary of gypsum boards from china.

I'm afraid you will never get rid of the joining, either with MarinePlywood or Hardiflex or Gysum.
They boards all have a flexibility and even if you put putty between them, the boards will move differently from the putty.
Do not be tempted to use polytuff or epoxy - even though it is a favourite here - it has no flex and will crack very easily.
The best you can do, is to really make sure you get good qulaity joining tape (Hardiflex make their own), then prime the whole surface properly against moisture.
This will minimise the cracking.

There is no way to cut corners around a professional job.

luma na ang paggamit ng hardiflex meron na ngayon mga materials na mas maganda sa hardiflex...wanna try gypsum board...mas makapapal pa..for ceiling me mga metal type pero di kinakalawang at madaling baklasin para linisin...di pa natagos ang init sa kisame...

mas nauna pa lumabas sa market ang gypsum board bago ang hardiflex..... i think mga 10yrs plus bago lumabas ang hardilflex (correct me f im wrong!)

even plywood develops the tictactoe over time. but i've been using hf for many years now, ok naman results. i plan to use gypsum sa on areas that have no leak potential: ganda kasi ng finish.

i use textured ceiling paint. it looks nice, and hides minor imperfections nicely.

Mga gurus pa help naman po to decide. I recently acquire a new house, I'm choosing between Hardiflex or yung PVC ceilings. Zero knowledge po ako dito sa mga ito.. which will you prefer po? ano ang pros and cons nila.. alin ang mas mura at mas tatagal? salamat po..

I'm assuming you're going to do this DIY. Better go with PVC because its easier to install. One person can do it alone, just like Doc V did:

Hardiflex (or fiber cement board) comes in 4' x 8' sheets. Its heavy and very difficult to install just by yourself. If you drop it it'll break.

One more advantage of PVC is finishing. As you can see in Doc V's project, PVC's appearance is already good right after installation. No need to paint.

With ficem boards you have to apply putty to hide the screws... sand it flat (a very dusty affair)... then the whole painting regimen.

If you're going to have this contracted out then the best person to answer your question is your contractor.

if the ceiling isn't beneath a roof (ergo no possible leak), i use gypsum. once painted it looks smoother than hf or wood, and it absorbs noise as well.

medy madali lang siya to install, but it's best kung may helper. diretsong screw + adhesive lang with no need to pilot hole. just be gentle with the board.

finishing's another matter. unlike hf the screws are easy to make flush, but applying masilya only looks easy - i've learned the hard way to only get skilled workers for paint prep.

maganda naman talaga ang fiber cement board, madali lang naman ikabit yan basta pantay ang metal frames.

At hindi lang Hardiflex ang available na brand sa market madami ding supplier ng fiber cement na quality rin naman
