Hi guys,
I've been here at PHM for several months now, but I haven't done any project yet, its just fun watching you do your projects.
I'm planning to start a small project this month, a small table and rack. Can you guys tell me that I need to get for the finishing like sealer, stain, varnish, etc? The ones that I could buy at ACE and needs only paint brush to apply( I don't have compressor & spraygun). Thanks guys.

Re: Materials for finishing

What finish do you want? Stained or painted? or natural?

Ace (dare i say!... Tmber knows why) has a good assortment of finishing paints, stains, sealers and etc.

Re: Materials for finishing

Thanks guys. I guess I would prefer a stained finish 'coz I would be using scrap wood for my project, and probably it will have different shades. So I guess going to ACE is a good thing to start, what materials would I need for a stained finish?

Re: Materials for finishing

Hi Bro, before you apply your preffered stain finishings, buy ka muna ng finishing sander, prepare first the
wood surfaces of your project para maganda result ng stained finish.

Tama rin si sir jarod sa advive niya sa iyo.

Re: Materials for finishing

BRO, pahiran mo muna ng solignum clear, its an anti bukbok at anay application para maprotektahan kahoy mo,
then pag tuyo na proceed pag apply ng sanding sealer or finishing sealer. Pag tuyo na muli, then apply your
stain.

your advice to apply wood preservative like solignum is ok but...
how can you apply the stain evenly when you have already sealed the wood?the sanding sealer will leave a clear film on the surface and this will prevent the wood from absorbing any stain whether its oil or water (aniline) based.
as the name implies, sanding sealer seals the wood..from being stained!
the stain needs to be in contact with bare sanded wood.
as simple as that.time and tested.and you dont need to be a chemist to understand that.

Re: Materials for finishing

I do agree with that Doc but it seems others have different approaches just like how timber does his staining as quoted HERE

make sure there isn't any finish on the door. then follow these steps:
the sanding sealer would provide a nice even starting point for staining. I would suggest one coat sanding sealer, sand flat using 220 grit then another coat ss. sand lightly with scrubbing pad like 3m. then apply stain. follows directions on each material. several coats of stain can be applied until the desired depth is achieved. in between coats you can apply ss and sand or scrub as needed. when depth is achieved you can apply the poly.

Re: Materials for finishing

I use to subscribe to the knowledge that you cannot stain after sealing, until I tried and got good results out of it. finishing I think is so diverse that no one person can say he has the perfect solution, I try a lot of finishes I can get a hold of at my expense just to try them. sometimes with success and often a disaster. a Glaze is really the best solution over sanding sealer as recommended, but where can we find some locally?

Re: Materials for finishing

just like timber i effectively glazed my bro's breakfast table. Also my kid's crib 🙂

The secret to making a durable glazing is that you have to give it a protective top coat.

at saan mo naman na kuha yung Mirotone Miroglaze mo??? please review! 🙂

dito sa Cebu brader, while I was giving powertool advice sa wood products exporter, they ran out of glaze (they also have a local brand) and the product sample arrived. I was so amazed how thick and very even it applied that I went to search their store and got me several colors to try...
oh and did I mention I also got a can of Mirowax?
