Re: Materials for finishing

it is similar to stain only placed over a finish such as a sealer. similar to a toner too...

Re: Materials for finishing

Tried most of the stuff discussed above (except for the glaze).

I will soon embark on some new finishing: epoxy.

Since I am building a wooden boat, I need to seal wood with epoxy to make it completely waterproof. Sandwiched between the wood and epoxy will be fiberglass cloth to add structural as well as abrasion resistance. The epoxy and fiberglass are almost transparent. But how to finish the wood underneath? That's the part where I have to be careful. Epoxy does not bond with oil-based stains. In another thread, aniline dyes (water-based jobus) was discussed. On top of the epoxy, I will also need to put some varnish with UV protection as epoxy suffers in the sun. I will probably need to test out combinations of dye, bleaching, spar varnish, and wood flour-cum-carbocil grouting to achieve the best combination of tint and strength. Will let you all know how that turns out in about a month.

Thought I'd contribute what I am doing in case anyone here is planning on a waterproof finish.

@ sir moji

Glaze or glazing sa mundo ng mga pintor ay,
a way of applying a very thin film of darker paint or varnish over a lighter color.Applications of the
said color is in a multiple manner. Letting previous glazings or applications totally dry before the next
thin applications.

Example is if I apply a color yellow on canvas and the color that I really want to achieve is green, I will
let the previous color to dry and that is when I'll start applying a very thin like film of color blue over
or on top of the color yellow. Now as I continue applying or glazing thin like film of color blue
by brushing, I will stop only when I have achieve the kind of intensity of color green that I'm looking for.

Re: Materials for finishing

if you talk of staining a pine with all its grainy glory then i chose to stain it without any film of sealer. in this way, some grains will be highlighted more and some lightly. that is the purpose of my staining. if all the grains will be highlighted altogether then it becomes boring.at least to me. so i close my discussion about my way of staining. yes you can apply sanding sealer before the stain but there is still a need to sand so to expose again "somehow" the wood fibers to make the stain to spread evenly but that is not my intention to the wood.i want the wood to show its ups and downs...and that will give me the thrill.

@ sir violaine

AMEN to that bossing, peace tayo ha. We are lucky we have this forum to express our personal
views and ideas on any thing under the sun on a clean and civil manner.

I personally recognize your ways or style of staining your wood and respect you for that, and if you prefer it that way to achieve the final finish you are looking for and so be it, no argument in that. You see sir all of us have different ways of approaching a final finish that we will be fully satisfied.

I'm no wood worker like most of you guys at PHM but prefer to continue using the style that I am very comfortable with, what is important is I am achieving or reaching the final finish that I want.

Like sir jarod's quote on sir timber's style of staining his wood, its his way and he achieves the
finish he desires and is happy with it, lets respect it, thats also the way artists practicing glazing
style do ,applying multiple passages of thin paint to achieve a certain effects.

Maybe my only mistake on my previous tip was not mentioning sanding between coats of
sanding sealers before the applications of the final stain.

I rest my case too.
