Hi Mil welcome to pinoyhandyman, I hope mil doesn't mean my Mother In Law 🙂 who is very good to me anyway...
first decide on what you want to do with the tools you intend to buy. I would suggest you start off with hand tools and move up from there. we will guide you to your path if you want but also be weary as there are lots of sulsulero 🙂 here... like me...

Just a warning mil, this hobby is very addicting ;). I also advise you that If you view or watch Timber doing his projects, dont turn your eyes to his tools...or else madali kang magkakasakit............sa bulsa :p

Welcome Mil to PinoyHandyMan.

peace Sir Timb 😀

Re: need help on tools...

if you don't have a workbench,i suggest that you put it in your priority work list then you start on your workshop.yes hand tools ka muna.in my own personal opinion, its better that you learn those traditional hand tools like handplaning, paring with chisels, etc before you put your hand to those dangerous power tools.know the basics, then upgrade as you go on.do it very slowly, not in a hurry.dont get disappointed when you make mistakes, learn and you will earn from your mistakes.do your research on power tools,as you are honing yourself to your handtools.know the must have.marami kang malalaman sa forum nato.and of course ever hardworking master timber is always here to guide you.warning...same as what sir armand says.totoo nakaka-addict tong hobby nato.mabuhay ka sir mil.

Re: need help on tools...

thanks for your quick reply. what kind of hand tools would i buy? im planning to go to binondo to purchase some tools. pero im worried n baka meron akong makalimutan. im planning also to buy power tools para isang bili n lng so i can get a discount from the reseller. some of my friends told me that i the must haves of power tools are the planer, router, orbital sander, miter saw, and jig saw. but for most of the hand tools i have no idea what to buy. can you help me which brands to pick na hindi madaling masira. my budget is around 30k. is this budget to small? thanks again.

Re: need help on tools...

Hi mil,

I think friends need to help friends by telling them the truth and not by hiding it from them. So I wanna be frank and friendly, 30K is a good starting point but do not assume it would cover all. If you mean it only for hand tools, yes it is more than enough but power tools would be a different story.

Here are some unsolicited tips:
1) Know what you want to build and think of the tools that you need to make it
2) Read or watch woodworking projects and look how they built it and what they used
3) Get plans on projects, plan ahead and visualize how to go about them so you'll know what tools to prioritize
4) Don't buy them all at once
4.1) You run the risk of spending more than what you really need
4.2) You run the risk of missing out a tool that you really need
4.3) You miss the chance to know which store could offer better price and support
4.4) You get to save more when you get to be a loyal customer, so buy one at a time until you build rapport and make friends with the store of your choice.
4.5) You miss the fun of getting to know Binondo (it's more than the tool shops)
4.6) You miss to try on eating on a great restaurant per visit
4.7) You'll never see timber often 😀
5) Read local and foreign tool reviews online
6) Canvass local and foreign tool prices online and by foot
7) Second hand tools are ok, as long as you get a good long warranty like a brand new one. Otherwise, you are buying in an as is basis and you should be aware of what that implies. Ask as much as you can.
8) You don't need expensive power tools, you only need those that are enough but capable to your needs.
9) Start by practicing on what you can use, eventually you will get to know what you really need.
10) Do not forget to invest in safety items as well (goggles, dust mask, etc)

Hope my partial list may help you in one way or another.

Re: need help on tools...

Here is a good primer for the beginner. http://popularwoodworking.com/icandothat . Just download the PDF.

It lists the starting tools you will need and a bit on how to use them. Although most are power tools, there are some handtools in there as well.

For handtools, the common ones you may want to buy are handplanes, a set of chisels, various saws (depends on your use), files, hammers, etc. (all plural as you will own more than one :p)

Jarod is correct in saying not to buy them all at once. You may want to order some tools from the states as well when the next box will be open for orders.

Re: need help on tools...

thanks for all your insights. just got back from binondo and other stores from raon. nagulat ako sa prices ng mga tools ung ibang items are very cheap so i suspected na knock offs lng ung ibang tools. how will i know if they are selling orig tools? ive search the net and found one site that sells brand new tools. are ozito or ryobi tools reliable in the long run?

 paano naman ako nalagay dito? hahahaha. Hey Mil, I don't have a shop but I can help you find the best stuff if you like that is locally available and priced well if not the best.
Bosch supports the site and would suggest you look up their powertools, feature per feature Bosch will provide best option for money (that is my opinion of course).

for Jigsaw: look for GST 80-PBE or GST 80 PB
for Mitersaw: the Makita LS1040 seem to be bang for the buck for heavy duty use, else look up Skil if light duty is intended...
for Router: highly recommended ko ang 3612C Makita
for ROS (Random Orbital Sander) nothing else but the Bosch ROS (Jarod will tell you how good it is:D)

unfortunately the router alone will cost around 23K which is a bummer, maybe if you wish you can get a single speed router that won't break the bank, maybe a 3600H would do.
now with all those the budget would be around 50k already... so I would suggest like others, get them one at a time so you can study what you really need and get to choose what fits you best...

btw, si Moji, may tindahan ng tools sa Makati yata eh 😉

Re: need help on tools...

you're very lucky sir mil, binigay na ni sir jarod ang lahat ng helpful tips sayo, from knowing binondo to playing hide n' seek with sir timber hehehe.kidding aside, that's true.if you are into power tool buying spree, choose the best.because the best will give you good service for a long time.it's a bit pricey(or expensive i think)but i tell you,you wont be disappointed with the handling...take this as example, lets say you want to buy a jigsaw, list down all the brands available with it's price.take also into consideration that with each brand there are this variant, like say added features for every corresponding variants.more features more expensive (just like cars).when you get the top 3 or 4 brands with good features then you have chosen 1 of the best.yun nga lang malulula ka sa price...tht's what hapen to me,buying tools that i thought was good enough because it is cheaper, hindi pala.i bought the cheaper one, only to find out na hindi pala ako masisiyahan sa result.kaya hayun hindi ko sya magamit.sayang.

I heard the 3612C router is the best money could buy (Beebeenator will tell you how good it is) 😀

Mil my friend, I have seen people very like you. Some took the easy road and some took the right road. Research, plan, budget and ask if still necessary.

There are lots of info hear my friend. The answer to your questions are just sometimes hidden between the lines.
