Re: need help on tools...

Oh bakit din ako napasama dito, anong chismis itech!? 😀

I heard the 3612C router is the best money could buy (Beebeenator will tell you how good it is) 😀

hahahahah bat nadamay din ako?

The 3612C router is a REAL LEGEND. this is the second most expensive tool i have and i dont regret buying it. It just feels soooooo sexy when i use it. I just need to get a triton so i can take this thing off the router table and start plunging it (the way its meant to be used!! hehehe)

i suggest you take up Timber's offer to go with you on tool shopping. I am sure he will be able to stretch your 30K on tools that you will never regret buying. That will also become an instant wise investment for the long run.

not to mention that this is a good time for you to enter the hobby coz PHM has been steadily growing 🙂

PS: Violaine is selling his makita router 3600 in the selling forum. You could research on that model if it suits you.

Re: need help on tools...

thanks for your quick reply. what kind of hand tools would i buy? im planning to go to binondo to purchase some tools. pero im worried n baka meron akong makalimutan. im planning also to buy power tools para isang bili n lng so i can get a discount from the reseller. some of my friends told me that i the must haves of power tools are the planer, router, orbital sander, miter saw, and jig saw. but for most of the hand tools i have no idea what to buy. can you help me which brands to pick na hindi madaling masira. my budget is around 30k. is this budget to small? thanks again.

Put in priority the ones you need..

Hand tools:
1. Chisels (concave, flat, convex. v-type)
2. Hand saws (crosscut, ripsaw, keyhole etc)
3. Hammers, mallets, etc.
4. Bastard files and wood rasp (diff sizes and shapes)
5. Buy a a mechanical hand drill, it has lots of uses
6. A bunch of screw drivers, diff kinds

Powertools:
1. Jigsaw
2. Compound Mittersaw
3. Router
4. Planer
5. Electric drill
5. Sheet sander
6. Orbital sander
7. Belt Sander
8. Angle grinder
9. Recipro saw
10. Circular saw
11. Bandsaw
12. Chainsaw

Acessories & other stuff
1. Measuring devices such as tape measure, Rulers, Steel square etc
2. Marking and etching guides
3 Sandapaper for powertools
2. Drill bits
3. Holesaw
4. Router bits
5. Sharpening stone for chisels etc
6. Files for sharpening saws
7.C- Clamps, V-clamps, Big clips
(Buy long screw and bolts make your own clamps)

Consumables
1. Screws, nails, washers, Nuts & bolts
2. Chalks, marking pencils.
3. Sandpapers

Anyway, try to visit Raon to buy the hand tools, then go to evangelista St. for the powertools.. Also try looking around quiapo area, and binondo area..

Don't buy it right away, make a survey which one is worth the price..

Also browse the net.. try looking at www.sulit.com.ph

or www.buyandsellph.com

Re: need help on tools...

You can make your own Milling machine / wood lathe

Buy a motor, preferably a clutch motor for the belted type. Look for long big screws, or have it milled at a machine shop. (that would be for X & Y axis) attach a handle to it for turning.

Make a center shaft, put some bearings on it, attach a 3-4 jaw chuck. Connect the other end to a pulley, attach a belt to the pulley.

Make a pointed, or jaw chuck shaft at the other end of the mil. make this stand movable.. for adjustment.

Install a tool stand for your chisels, rasp, sanders and files..

Fabricate attachments, such as chisels, files, sanders etc...

here a link on how to make one...

Re: need help on tools...

next thing you will recommend making a DIY tablesaw... not that I don't like DIY (which I do a lot) but recommending them to someone who wants to acquire basic tools are a bit too much at this time IMHO. Also it is good to tell them what they are getting into like safety hazards when doing things they understand little of.

We make recommendations and others take them as a rule or guide even if it sometimes can be wrong (I'm not saying they are).
In another site, someone recommended a thin kerf blade, while the recommendation was ok, incomplete information made it bad.

Please suggest or recommend wisely and placing yourself in their shoes in their situation...

I highly recommend to lean on the side of safety often over price. it will be cheaper to spend extra than spend more on medical bills... will keep you happier too...

bottomline, before buying tools or anything, it always good to do your homework. research and study your options. internet is a great tool that opens the world and everything in it...

Re: need help on tools...

naku tinamaan yata ako dun ah!

i remember i outfitted my 4100 with a thin kerf freud blade to rip some long woodstock..

when i read timber's comments, mejo ninerbyos nga ako and i went back to the users manual but i made sure i was fully aware of the manual's recommendation not to use a think kerf blade..and here is the detail which i missed to post for others to ponder.

the 4100 users manual says that when replacing blades, it should be as close as possible to the original blade's dimensions..

the original blade that came with the unit has a kerf of .128" and bosch recommends .092" or wider kerf for replacements..the freud diablo although is rated a thin kerf blade actually has a kerf of 0.098" well beyond the .092" suggestion.

and like timber has said many times in the past, be familiar with the users manual..keep it for reference before you do something (stupid) in the future.

and that will keep our fingers attached to our hands.

ouch!

btw:

with some posts in this thread early on...i woudnt really recommend the almost complete tools...let the man explore the possibilities of this craft...i remember i started it out (1993) with just a handsaw, a claw hammer later to add a cheap chisel, then finally my first corded b&d drill and so on...because in truth...the tool hunting believe it or not is endless..manufacturer is always making new (?, mostly redesigned!) tools at a pace like cellfone manufacturers...just like the endless battle between TIDE and SURF!

i will perhaps recommend to dip his foot into the advance level by getting a router, get a maktec (though i havent got one but since it is made under the makita umbrella then ill go for it, its relatively cheap but maybe well built)...

most if not all believes that a router can do a lot of things with the right bits and some say it is the most versatile tool made in the 20th century for woodworking.

and a circular saw for cutting boards in a breeze...tama na yun muna.

hindi naman siguro machine shop yun na kailangan siguro ng digital calipers for exacting measurements...i remember tuloy the video of the old japanese master craftsman who made a beautiful cabinet out of some old trusted hand tools.

ok enough said...

have a good day ahead mga PHM'ers!

good am jonathan!..its still a weekend!...ala ba tayong project jan???

hmmm...me naaamoy akong ginagawa mo sa backyard ah...sige surprise mo na lang kame...the PHM woodworking forum is quite silent except for the nice chisel plane made by timber ...

and silence means...danger! (busy ang mga brothers in their craft...)

hindi naman brader, someone was recommending thin kerf for plywood, without the complete information kasi someone could have gotten a thin kerf blade not recommended for plywood such as a ripping blade. It wasn't just thin kerf to look at but several factors like grind angles and number of teeth should have be considered as well (making thin kerf a secondary option lang:D)

Re: need help on tools...

I really like Jarod's first three unsolicited advice...

Here are some unsolicited tips:
1) Know what you want to build and think of the tools that you need to make it
2) Read or watch woodworking projects and look how they built it and what they used
3) Get plans on projects, plan ahead and visualize how to go about them so you'll know what tools to prioritize

yeah, have a project in mind first, then get the tools you need for that project, unless there are really bargains in the market which you can invest on. Else, you will be a tool collector lang.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.
