i saw a shop stool project from Shopnotes magazine issue 97 vol 17 requiring a piano stool hardware similar to this (c/o Lee Valley).
meron kaya nito locally? or an alternative? di pa naman rush...maganda kasi combination ng wood and metal dun sa project.

^ So the nut is where the chair legs connect to? (The end is where you sit on?) The closest i can imagine are those record "bench screw vise." 15 inches of adjustability, should be plenty strong. Cast iron "nut" has tabs for fitting and the steel screw will be easy to have welded something on (tommy bar handle.)
Hmmm... Now that we have gas-lift chairs for cheap (height adjustable, swivels, got casters) I was thinking i'd just get one instead of making one for the shop- personally that's how i'd choose that battle. ...Read in some forum how one guy used surplus dentist's chair for height adjustable mini workbench...
Unless if it's a gift/comission, or a rocking chair, imho it's not too worthwhile to make one (especially how fast i make things!)...

Another option might be ... machine bolt and two nuts. 1 x 10" stainless steel bolt and two 1" stainless steel nuts would cost slightly less than the Irwin bench screw vise.
If the two nuts are spaced some distance apart, that could give more stability than the nut of the Irwin screw, though the Irwin nut is easier to affix.
Hex bolt head possibly with a third nut and epoxy might be easier to affix to wood than the massive cylindrical Irwin screw head, and there would be no Irwin handle to have to cut off. (Do the small spheres at the ends of the handle unscrew? I don't have a unit nearby to check.)

the irwin screw vise is a no-no for me..the turning head is too precious for me to saw it off!
ill go visit the bolts and nuts center and inquire. will let you know if its a success or not.

Idea is simply to use two nuts spaced some distance apart instead of the unusual elongated nut pictured. How to affix the nuts to wood is left as an exercise. Attaching the bolt head to wood is the same exercise as doing knobs.
