Re: stainless steel materials

gud day. where do you guys go to when buying stainless steel stuff. yung pwede ang tinge or where they sell it per foot. i know a place along commonwealth ave near evergotesco qc, they sell stainless tubes there per foot but the flat bars are sold whole 20ft or something. gets pretty expensive especially if you need only one or two feet worth of material.
i need different thickness of flatbars in small proportions only. please help:)

Hi, where exactly is this store on Commonwealth Ave.? Any name, contact info, or directions?

Also, pardon my ignorance, but what is 'tinge' or 'tingi'?

Re: stainless steel materials

"Tinge" or "tingi" is Tagalog bro. I guess you've not been in the country long. "Tinge" means sold in small amounts or odd sizes. Normally metal stocks are sold in fixed lengths. For example, pipes are 6m meters in length, and you cannot buy less than that length unless the store sells "tinge".

Re: stainless steel materials

do you know there fake and real stainless?
notice when stainless gets rusty after awhile?
know what you buy make sure there not fake

it doesnt rust? owws? people say just to sell hehe i guarantee it will rust maybe not in 1 year but surely it will rust (it will start on portion you welded) and theres also difference in pipes and tubes the ones shes selling is tubing not pipes.. compare prices of 202 and 301 for sure its huge gap coz 202 uses very low nickel kaya nga pati piso natin tinitira ng china para makuha nickel ng piso natin dahil mahal nickel.

Does this warning also apply to stainless steel screws? Do we have to worry about the quality of the stainless steel in screws that we buy from stores like To Suy, Screw Kingdom, Screwmaster, other Binondo/Divisoria stores, King Bolt, Y2K Screw, Cubao stores, etc., ... or are they all generally good and not fake or deficient and will not rust?

According to this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel
it seems to be the chromium content that affects whether the stainless steel will rust or not.

Thanks for the explanation of 'tinge' or 'tingi'.

Re: stainless steel materials

trick i learned if you want ss stuff. bring a magnet and if it sticks to the material then the quality is questionable even if its marked as stainless steel. tried it on kitchen bowls at the mall and you can tell the difference with out looking at the prices or the brand.

Re: stainless steel materials

I passed by Caloocan one time and there is this street (MH Delpilar) that is parallel to Rizal ave. From 10th ave down to 7th or 6th ave i saw rows of shops selling only stainless in all shapes and sizes. Maybe this is where the stainless jeeps and cookwares source their materials. I think this place, Delpilar is for stainless as Raon is for electronics.

Re: stainless steel materials

since we are already talking about metals here, do these shops also carry aluminum rods maybe an inch or so in diameter and also bronze/brass rods?

btw, how will you know if the brass/bronze is self lubricating type?

and yes, tingi ang kelangan ko. less than a foot actually but a foot will do

Re: stainless steel materials

Goldrat is correct - good tip.

If it comes from China - you need to be watchful. Not passing judgement, just observations from experience.
Even Tu Suy, they have different grades, different prices.

If you need yacht/maritime ss, then you should go to a chandlery - perhaps Manila Yacht Club or some of the commercial chandleries around Juan Luna in Binondo.

Cut corners never ends in a professional result. Don't kid yourselves that you can buy cheap and expect it will last long.

i've gone to this place in taytay. i went by the floodway route para hindi traffic. once you passed by taytay market, turn left on the corner of 7-11. go to the rightmost lane and go easy. just a few meters ahead you'll see a blue themed store na puro bakal (shafting, box sections, pipes, l bracket, etc). the name is placed on top and is very large. btw, don't go during lunch breaks kasi closed sila.

this is the place:

e. de jesus general merchandise (nihonweld)
manila east road, san juan, taytay, rizal
658-5761 658-2134 286-4785

i got a 2" diameter x 12" cold rolled steel. ito pinakamaliit nila sa tingi. not bat imho.

unfortunately, they do not have the 1-1/4 diameter aluminum and brass/broze (sintered or self lubricating) solid shafting which i still need. any ideas?

Re: stainless steel materials

Bro for shafting in our area I buy from the "Makita" industrial supply along Felix Avenue on the Cainta side of the Cainta Junction. If coming from Sta Lucia, just go straight through the stoplight. The store is about 100m from the stoplight on the left side.

You could also try "Cut Size Metal Fabrication" also along Felix Ave. but this one is before the junction coming from Sta. Lucia. The sign on their storefront says "GT Metal" but the receipt give the later. The landmark is the Shell station. I'm not really sure if they have SS or Bronze shafting but this is where I buy MS plates cut to whatever specs I want.

Another source is the sister store of the "Makita", if I remember correctly the store name is Tools For U ... or something like that. They don't really carry metal stock however I know for a fact that they can order for you buy you'd have to wait. If you are like me who often does not have the time to go to Binondo or Caloocan, this is fine. They can get hard to find stock like 30mm 316 SS round stock for example.

Re: stainless steel materials

Glad to be of help. The sister store of "Makita" (this is what people in our area call it by the way) is along Ortigas Extension. At the stoplight coming from Sta. Lucia turn left, it just after the Meralco office. They mostly carry tools but they do also have some bits and pieces like screws, nuts and bolts, etc.
