Re: tung oil

Saan sa Muntinlupa ang shop nila? Up to what time are they open?

If they're still open 6:30PM weekdays pwede kong daanan.

Fantastic! Not sure where they are exactly but try calling them up. Numbers are:

(02) 862-3041 up to 44 (loc. 209 / 214 / 208)
0922.8337374 or 0922.8633740
[email protected]
look for Luisa, Maica and Carissa

Hope it's near you. I think I'll see you Sat, Joey so I can get it from you then.

As for the other Joey, he-he, nice try. I still have a gallon of Sadolin hardwood oil so medyo ubusin ko muna yon!

Re: tung oil

Update on eblue's Tung Oil:
1 Quart = P955
1 Pint = P614
Their shop is in Muntinlupa which is the other side of the world for me. They deliver but minimum order is P5000 otherwise they charge P250 delivery fee.

I recommend we do a group buy of, at least, 6 quarts.

Caution -- tung oil requires time and patience (long drying time, long curing time) which is probably why it isn't commercially popular, compared to more 'instant' finishes. Appearance is not glossy. If you find you like it and want more than quart quantity (whether for individual or for group), I suggest asking eblue to bring in the gallon size ... should be 30-40% cheaper per unit volume than quart size.

Re: tung oil

Thanks for the words of caution, Guad.

I'm quite happy with my Sadolin Hardwood Oil. But Tung Oil has always been somewhat of an exotic mystery to me. Just have to try it. I think I'll go for the quart size for now and see how it goes.

Re: tung oil

I have a bunch of items to order from eblue that would total about P3k. So Joey and Joey81, do you want to ride on my order with a quart each? Only problem would be how to get it to you. I think Joey81 won't be a problem because he lives near me (correct me if I recall wrongly). Joey, where do you live?

Re: tung oil

I'm quite happy with my Sadolin Hardwood Oil. But Tung Oil has always been somewhat of an exotic mystery to me.

I think the real mystery is what is in Sadolin Hardwood Oil, Zar Wipe-on Tung Oil, etc., etc., etc. IIRC, I read somewhere that the Sadolin product, like a similar IKEA product, is just linseed oil possibly with some unspecified additives.

Reposting this article, which helped me become less mystified:
Oil Finishes: Their History and Use

Condensed version:
In good old days BC (Before Confusion), manufacturers were honest and transparent. Everyone knew what was what. People used:
1. BLO
2. BLO + varnish ... more durable
3. BLO + varnish + thinner ... easier to apply
4. Shellac
5. Varnish
6. Lacquer
BLO = raw linseed oil + driers
Varnish = cook( {drying oil like BLO or tung oil} + {resin like polyurethane, alkyd or phenolic} )

Then, starting 1960s, manufacturers/marketers deliberately obfuscated and misled:
7. premixed oil + varnish ==> mysterious names like 'Danish oil', etc.
8. premixed varnish + thinner = wiping varnish ==> mysterious names like 'tung oil', 'tung oil finish', Waterlox, etc.

Note: Article says to sand between coats of tung oil. This is not a uniformly held view. Being lazy, I side with those who say 'there is nothing to sand between coats'.

Re: tung oil

@Guad
Thanks for the info on finishes. I think I came across that article, too, when I was doing a bit of research as I was getting confused by all the different descriptions. What I meant about "exotic mystery" is the application and final look, actually. I like trying out different finishes and Tung Oil has always been difficult to source.

@Joey
Ok. Joey81 and I will be ordering today. Nakulam!

Hello there, just checking if someone still sells Tung Oil / Danish Oil / Linseed Oil? Leads are welcome, just went to ace hardware, they had none. Willing to go to Binondo for the sake of woodcraft. Thanks!
