Re: What is the cheapest wood for picture frame?

commissioned works perhaps...

but before i think of making picture frames..i would have an assortment of tools in the first place..from which you have already an idea of the cost...of the wood and tools themselves.

its just that....

Re: What is the cheapest wood for picture frame?

Almaciga: This is the type of wood for picture framing, matibay, mura at hindi inaanay. Picture framing is my first woodworking hobby way back in the early ninety's. I used to earn from this hobby as my sideline. I used to source my shaped almaciga in various quezon city shops but mostly are now closed due to the arrival of synthetic framing materials from china. If you still want to use wood, then you can go to quezon blvd fronting FEU maraming gumagawa ng frames dun. If you want to use synthetic materials then go to jose abad santos near divisoria just before M. Hizon elementary school. I forgot the name of the shop but it is now my source for personal framing projects.

Hi Armand, Would you car to show us some of the synthetic materials items that you have bought? If you have pics of the Almaciga, that would be great as well.

Re: What is the cheapest wood for picture frame?

Kung photography lang, go with the imported ready made moldings polystyrene or wood (a lot more expensive). I would use/manufacture frame moulding if I have special/intricate designs or the labor/materials won't be worth it. For commisioned works maybe, but then you won't be using the cheapest wood.

I have a small framing business in Zambales. The imported polystyrene killed the local wood frame business. Also, some local wood frames are prone to wood borers. The time to route and finish them is costly.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

@jarod: bigfoot explained the "synthetic" i mentioned above. The almaciga looks very similar with palochina but a little darker and harder. Sorry jarod the almaciga frames that i have here are already stained/colored so you won't be able to see the wood itself while the synthetic ones are likewise pre-colored at china factories.

Re: What is the cheapest wood for picture frame?

Old or very mature Gmelina wood @ 25/bdft .Not hardwood but nice to work on and tool friendly. The furniture making industry is now using it as a cheap alternatve furniture for people with tight budget. A friend of mine always makes 2 identical furniture (one narra and the other gmelina) and offers 1/3 price on the gmelina.. At home depots these are sold as kitchen cabinet doors. With little skill and creativity in finishing (since it's light colored) can be stained to look like a hard wood.
The other one is the mahogany about 40-50/bdft. I have a friend based in caloocan that sells cheap lumber. What's interesting are the not so common wood (name unknown) that he sells. I sometimes bring my electric planer to check on the grains.

Re: What is the cheapest wood for picture frame?

I think the cheapest is palochina, because it could be bought secondhand from crates.. I suggest you go to pier..

Or look for a secondhand lumberyard, you could find wood scraps that just might fit for a frame..

cheapest pricewise often doesn't equate to cheaper altogether, developing secondhand wood often needs a good amount of time and tools and miscellaneous which should also be considered. time which can easily be wasted cannot be earned back unlike money...
while sometimes secondhand wood looks cheaper, if not inspected thoroughly could result to wasted money. also check or calculate the amount of wood you would be receiving for your money, bdft wise it might cost the same if you get a new one. I remember inquiring secondhand wood which eventually cost more than a new s4s wood of the same kind...
I would highly recommend recycling, but do your homework properly so you would be saving instead of wasting...

Re: What is the cheapest wood for picture frame?

good day mga sir, help regarding wood to use in picture frame making ( cheapest =] ).. ty po

@ whuuups

I think I can share some thoughts on this matter; nowadays prices of
wood are very expensive in terms of board feet. Yes palochina may be the cheapest according to sir clayfigur with all due respect to him, but using this kind of wood for your framing business, well aesthetically speaking not advisable for me unless you can find a good supplier of fresh cut palochinas and not the second hand ones wit nail holes or dents or even chippings.

Why do I say this, because I'm an artist and my paintings are framed by regular art framers that uses only ALMACIGA as their wood. It produces very fine finish when varnished and also very light for framing.

If by any chance you have free time try visiting commercial frame shops in malls and study their frames, ask what kind of wood they use for framing, just pretend to be a client and keep on asking for information. I know framers also uses the synthetic or plastic ones now for small or medium sizes of pictures.

Anyway good luck on your venture;) sideline, OK yan nasa linya ka rin ng art, I have artist friends that uses photographs as their medium .

Who knows your sideline might evolve into a more serious artistic approach.
