Re: DIY - Car Body Repairs

nice to see your almost finished. Spray epoxy primer on top of body filler before applying body color. It will prevent the paint to sip in to the bodyfiller..

"Epoxy primer" is a different animal altogether
I think you're referring to the primer surfacer that is recommended by the base color paint manufacturer i would be using. Usually Primer,Base Color, and Top coat are of the same brand.

im not sure about this, i could be wrong. but these are my experiences.

Re: DIY - Car Body Repairs

from bare metal to epoxy primer (yellow)
the sprayed pink on the right side is my primer surfacer.

Re: DIY - Car Body Repairs

now that i already messed up this small part of the back panel, it would be easier if i will also fix the other areas on this panel. Since i would be spraying coats on the whole panel after all, i might as well finish up all the broken parts.

Now here comes the fun part.
I know that 3 years ago some parts of rear wheel area already started rusting cus of its side fairing catching all the dirt and mud inside. This is always a drag for me because just to remove those mud and clean it i have to take apart the whole thing.

When i finally removed the faring and outside trims the other day , i found out that they (rust) have already grown up and got bigger.

Here is the whole rear left panel.
Those arrows point to the troubled areas.

So in:
painted = use surface primer (pink)
bare metal = use epoxy primer (yellow)

after the epoxy primer, do you still coat it with surface primer or no need?

bare metal -->epoxy primer-->filler-->surface primer-->base color-->top coat-->buff

the only time i use surface primer is when its on top of a filler.

those colors are not definite, those yellow and pink are just what i have in my garage. It could be in any color you picked from the paint store.

Yeah..we may use epoxy primer, If the next coat would have a stronger thinner than the existing..

If its the same kind of thinner. (ex. automotive lacquer, then use automotive lacquer primer)

But if the existing coat is lacquer, and next coat is acrylic lacquer, I use epoxy primer in between. Also a halogen bulb can hep prevent moist seeping in the paint, rather than waiting for a hot day to paint.

Anyway, I think your using urethane based paint. Are you?

Re: DIY - Car Body Repairs

Hi there sir benQ, I 've been following your postings regarding the repairs you are bravely doing on your car.

Though I will not be repairing dents on my jeep, just repainting the front hood, one of this days I will imbark in the same task of scraping the paints off, sanding and so on and so forth. I'm just simply gathering a ton of confidence, conditioning myself that I can do the the repairs well.

If that confidence that I'm trying to gather does not happen then I guess I'll simply bring the jeep to the shop and have it painted there. Ayaw ko kasing mababoy at masira pag re repair ng front hood.

Re: DIY - Car Body Repairs

Sometimes it's not about doing the physical itself. These skills need years to acquire. In my case knowing the proper and good way a task can be done is DIY by itself. The actual implementation maybe done by somebody who does the job for a living. What I'm after is more advanced, easier and cheaper (if possible) way of doing things through better research then getting these implemented as I see fit. However doing it personally sometimes has a different level of fulfillment even if the job falls short a bit. 🙂
