a very complicated and very complex topic that can be very simple and easy to do...
the complexity and complication starts with what to use and why on a certain project. next is how to apply it...
practicing is VITAL! always use scraps or practice material before applying finish to your projects. I use a good number of finishes and can recommend some. but learning it yourself is a good way of educating yourself why you choose a certain finish over another.
the finishes...

and how to try them on test pieces...

there are a gazillion ways of finishing and knowing how is important. I always say "that a good woodworker with bad finishing gets less work than a poor carpenter that can finish well"...

Re: Finishing Talk...

here are some more pictures that show how finishes affect the wood. stain will color or shade differently depending on the wood. here are two different plywood scraps and notice the color difference.

wiped on poly, sanding sealer and blo in different parts of the ply.

and here the stain over all the applied finish, works great but differs slightly in shade...

Re: Finishing Talk...

id like to comment on blo and poly finish on red narra and perhaps might be true for any reddish wood.

blo on red narra brings out the RED with a WHAPAK. Poly makes it look..... well reddish red.

Re: Finishing Talk...

question on Enamel paints. Actually directed to boysen Engr. Chris. QDE (quick dry enamel) is really for bursh or roller application. Hence how much thining is necessary to eliminate brush marks?

also what enamel paint can be used for spray painting? then we use lacquer thinner right?

I may have missed this part in the seminar since it was a work day and i was busy with the annoying phone 🙂

Re: Finishing Talk...

cant answer your question Ben, but the boys from Boysen advised that the enamel is not designed for spray painting period . better have then brushed or rollered, no thinning advised as well...

but if you are spraying, here are some stuff that Moji and I just got.
mixing container with graduations, makes mixing and cleaning easier.

paint strainer cleans the paint from the unwanted residue or build-up that can damage the finish...

make sure to stock if you intend to spray paint...

Re: Finishing Talk...

now if you intend to be consistent in paint or finish mixing, Moji and I agreed a viscosity cup is the way to go. we are waiting for availability locally so we can order. and here is the link Moji posted http://www.spraygunworld.com/Information2/Viscosity.html

we also got a water separator for the gun...

and some tack clothes that will come in very handy before finishing...

Re: Finishing Talk...

Timb please let us know how well those mixing containers clean up after use. Looks like it's made of plastic. Do they have glass ones too?

Re: Finishing Talk...

Moji uses them already, he seems satisfied, but they do look and feel like regular food containers that have graduations. we have the link of the site in previous post (not sure of glass containers).

Re: Finishing Talk...

The plastic containers are chemical resistant. So far they have withstood straight acrylic thinner. The only thing of course is that it scratches. So watch those mixing sticks. I don't think there is one made of glass. You could try those glass baking measuring cups if you really want one.

Re: Finishing Talk...

got some containers from Japan Home, they seem to hold Lacquer thinner without affecting the plastic.

unfortunately the seal isn't as good as I hoped it would be. but it works as a better dispenser and cleaner than the metal can.

Re: Finishing Talk...

checked the SATA viscosity cup, it cost 49 USD at amazon... so I looked online and made mine.

the important thing is the orifice size which is 4.12mm...

and from the reference chart posted by Moji, I can tune the cup as soon as the epoxy dries...

the recommended time for water is 5 seconds. so far mine times 6.5 seconds consistently. all I need is lessen the liquid capacity of the cup by filing the sides slightly.
