Hock blades are just an upgrade..stanley irons do work. Just sharpen when necessary.

A good sharp iron bade like Hock ....

Problem with a Hock blade is it is already half the price of a fine-tuned plane 😀

It's nice to have one but I guess the original blade can cover 90% of the time.

Re: How to flatten a board using Handplanes...

nice handwork brad,
iba talaga pag complete ang handplane especially for flattening the board...

brader i-plane mo ba ilalim ng board mo?
kasi yung ilkalim ng wb ko hindi ko na binalak i-plane ( remember ? )
na-katam-aran na...

because most of my handplanes are set to cut thin, I decided to pull out my no.7 (jointer plane) which was set to cut more aggressive.

first pass across the grain.

available na ba locally ang no 7 ?

@timber,

that is painstaking arm work brader! it really helps to have a thicknesser for this kind of work.

i wonder why they havent manufactured planes with 5 inches wide blades for rough flattening boards?

i am sure you can enlighten me..hehe

btw..since the boards are butt jointed, i bet you made use of some strong yellow glue here.;)

@jonathan,

ayaw mo ba brader ng Groz #7? hehe..ako..ayoko..basta.

ala ka bang secret project in the making?

ako eh puro quickie projects lang..things for shop improvement...today i made a shoe stand..out of scrap material..nothing fancy..sablay naman ang photobucket ko kaya no pic upload muna.

ngapala...hindi kaba nabaha? sana naman eh hindi.

Aside from a hard time looking for a wide stone to sharpen that and a humongous cast body, pushing a 5 inch iron would make your arms like Popeye's! :showoff:

Maybe that's why handheld planers start with that size.

Jon, the no.7's are locally available na, they cost around 4k nowadays. If yoy plan to get one samahan pa kita Kaya lang be ready to work on it, malaking trabaho to flatten and get a no.7 tuned out of the box), I thought you wanted my no.7? if you can wait a bit parating na yung inorder namin to replace what I have.
