Today I felt a different kind of satisfaction
imagine something like this
becomes this!!!
in a night... well around 3 hours or so.
I can now proudly (and i admit it BOASTFULLY heehee) say that i can finally mill rough lumber to S4S!
its just so fulfilling to see the transformation. Milling work steps
Thicknesser with the radius of the bow facing downwards. Took lots of passes
Table saw, since its short i ripped jointed it using the fence only. no jigs and nothing fancy
Table saw cross cut sled, to square off the ends.
Re: improved shop made marking gauge
crosscut a piece off for the base of the tool
that looks huge but its only a 4" x 5" piece
happily ripped something this small on my TS with predictable accuracy.. I think my TS and i are finally communicating siguro as long as i dont critic it HAHAHA
aligning
marking
Re: improved shop made marking gauge
i know i have a drill press. Unfortunately i have not set it up yet nor squared the table or anything. Hence i cordless drilled this with a cheapo frostner bit... it took 5 minutes!
chiseled the hole, I need to know how to sharpen my chisel and i still need practice. The fit is NOT perfect there is slight play
hole for the clamping mechanism. I drilled a hole using a frostner to act as a pilot for the longer standard wood drill bit
here is a combo threaded screw and female thread thingy from Hafele. I have hundreds of these for moments like this... rhyme?
Re: improved shop made marking gauge
ok now its in.... my fingers CAN turn the screw but its rather impractical
hence
Two washers are sandwiched by another female thread thing, wala kasi akong nut na kasya .
the one on the right was my first attempt.... looks rather primitive
the old one was so unsquare and fit too loose in the hole that i have to make supports at the rear. Which didnt address the unsquareness
My new one has some play but once clamped its squared right on at one plane and its only slightly off at another which doesnt matter, Just need to orient the marking pin properly
Re: improved shop made marking gauge
all thats left is for more sanding to get marks off... especially the TS blade burn marks
then some linseed oil
Then its done!
if i can find a thin strip of brass or SS i would probably inlay in on the side of the rod where the screw clamps down.
Everything was rounded over, it make so much difference
oh and the Maple marking gauge is noticeably heavier than the lauan. It finishes rather well too. I only used a dulled out 120 grit sand paper and it achieved a smoothness i could never get from the lauans. It did get tear offs at the underside though when i was chiseling. I forgot i needed a thing underneath to prevent tear offs . I just glued the tear off back in.. WHAHAHAH
This is my first time working with hardwood. I like it!
Re: improved shop made marking gauge
nice work Ben, have made one before and will make one soon, hopefully it would look as nice as what you made...

Re: improved shop made marking gauge
🙂 i doubt if mine is nicer than yours... push sticks nga lang eh AHHAHA
Thanks for the compliment though, I really did put in patience this time around.
May kulang.. or rather may sobra. I now understand why the commercial marking gauges are triangular or oval at one end. Its where the portion of your hand thats between the thumb and the index finger rests. Its more ergnomic if that portion is slanted or rounded.
I was planning rounded but i doubt my scroll saw blades can handle maple. I got some temporary replenishments in Wilcon. Meron pala sila. :)... So i guess a few sacrificial blades should be so bad

Very nice Bee, very nice indeed. Looks even better than the one I bought in Japan. No kidding.
Re: improved shop made marking gauge
Thank you very much for the compliment guys 🙂
its 3 hours of investment plus a pittance amount of hardwood. RS online was selling a rosewood marking gauge.. it wasnt cheap so i decided to make nalang.. hehehe
Re: improved shop made marking gauge
Ben, I just might have the materials to make one soon... before the Mahogany arrives, which is expected by Saturday this week...
