I am in need of jointing 8'6" boards
The best idea i have come up with is using a tubular aluminum.. putting it on top of the stock.. and then run a pattern bit/flush trim bit
The tubular aluminum is 2.8mm thick aluminum to keep it from bending
i am contemplating on using a 2 x 4 aluminum or a 1 x 4 instead. I will have them 10 feet long.. and i may put them on a dedicated "jointing table"
anybody has a better idea?
the method is something like this
Re: need ideas on how to joint looong boards
why noot buy a 1 x 4 x 12ft board and run it on the jointer? that should give you what you need, id clamping is a concern, get a wider one. I have seen 1 x 8 x 12ft board that are very straight and flat, you can make it a dedicated top if you wish but you just cant bang the sides...

fingerjoint router bits or
biscuit joiner in action sir..
Re: need ideas on how to joint looong boards
Depends what you mean by 'joint'. It sounds like you already have flat parallel faces and now want to create a straight edge at 90 deg to the faces using a straightedge?
Standard length of aluminum square tubing in glass/aluminum stores seems to be 21 ft, so cut in half is a good length to have around. Last I checked, cost < P400 for 21 ft, in the 1.75 x 4 in size. But only about 1 to 1.5 mm thick, though looks straight and rigid enough to naked eye. Where do you get 2.8 mm, is that circular or rectangular, and how much does it cost?
Re: need ideas on how to joint looong boards
Hi Guad, yep you are correct. I need create a straight edge
its rectangluar
a supplier in our office has the 2.8mm. but thats only for 2 x 4 size. at 10 feet its 2100 something. quite expensive
The 1 x 4 is 1.5mm. This one i did not ask the price
Re: need ideas on how to joint looong boards
Another option, thicker and more expensive than the commonly available 1-1.5 mm aluminum tubes but less expensive than the 2.8 mm that you mentioned might be Hafele tracks. Comes in 2 and 3 m lengths and four weight capacities. The one below is the 60-100 kg size, ~P1,400/3m last I checked.
Did they cover this in Hafele presentation -- non-obvious or unintended uses of Hafele hardware?
As for cutting tool, circular saw should work too and faster than router, no?
Re: need ideas on how to joint looong boards
nice heads up on the tracks Guad. i have a length of one of thee i think that completely escaped me.
yup CS would be faster. i would still keep the router option open for stocks less than 8" in width
