Shortening a bolt . DIY style.

When shortening bolt length, screw in the nut first then clamp in a vise or locking pliers. Use the nut as a guide to cut the bolt to desired length by hack or cut off saw. Back the nut in some more then deburr / slightly bevel the edge of the cut bolt with sand paper, file or grinder. Remove the nut and you have a clean threaded shorter bolt.

Pro Style

Mount it in a Vise, cut it with a cut off tool and run the edges on a bench grinder. Done in 45 seconds.
