I plan on doing welding work on my car with a TIG welder, bodywork mainly on the rear wheel arches. Since this is my first time I will do welding on a car I want to know if it's necessary to empty the fuel tank of gasoline or remove the tank prior to welding.
From my internet search I can't find any info whether it's necessary and all advice I've read thus far only suggest to remove the battery connections, unplug the ECU and even remove the fuse of the ECU.
Any expert advice on your experience regarding this would be appreciated. Thanks.
Re: 1st time to weld on car
Hello there bro King,
AHH, not an expert here bro but my reply will be based on past experiences from other auto shops that I have the chance to observe. Yes the infos you got are correct, any metal works in a car, like welding of any process like stick, mig or tig, batteries and other electrical components should be disconnected to avoid any power drainage or short circuiting. When using any of these processes will need the attachment of its ground clamp which affects the electrical system of the vehicle.
The only process of welding that you can do without disconnecting all the electrical components of your car will be by using an OXY-Acetylene process, if you have one and know how to use this. You can use this to cut some parts of your car's rusted body paneling or fender, you can weld with it too since it is not run by electricity, so no need for grounding clamps to be attached to the car. Oxy-Ace works the same way as a TIG, melting a filler rod while joining panels or just plugging up a rusted hole.
With regards to your gasoline tank, there is no need to remove it if the fuel tank and the fuel line is far from the area you will be repairing. But if you prefer to remove the tank for your peace of mind, then I don't see any thing wrong with it, it will keep your mind clear and focused on the repairs you will be doing.
HOPE THIS HELPS BRO !!! 😉 :jazzysax:

Re: 1st time to weld on car
thanks bro Rosy... I prefer to do the welding with tig. In my case it's a hustle and a lot of work to remove the gas tank. I'll just siphon as much gasoline from it as possible and I think I need to keep the arc as short as possible. cheers
