Hi there guys, I just want to share this experience of same fate as jarod's a few weeks ago.
Well yesterday, Saturday when I was leaving for the market to buy a sack of rice and already in front of my gate, I noticed the right rear end tire of the van was already flat, what a bummer and it was also raining but what can I do but to change the tire with the spare tire right there and under the pouring rain. Hay, napaligo tuloy ng wala sa oras.

Anyway I was so surprised to see a bolt's head and a screw imbedded in the tire and so after a short shower went first to the vulcanizing shop and had the flat tire vulcanized. SO sorry no pics of the flattened tire with the bolt's head and screw na naka baon sa gulong, I forgot all about taking a picture or two. But finally after the repair and have done my errand I took a pic of the two culprits when I got back from the market.

Here are the two culprits pulled out by the guy in charge of repairing the tire, a 1" X 1/4" small bolt and a 1" screw. These two culprits gave me additional gastos yesterday afternoon, but thinking about it I'm still lucky that the incident happened still inside my compound and not on the road. :p

I have a question to shoot, my tires size is 215/65 R15, now I'm planning to replace all 4 of them soon plus 1 for the spare since the tractions or grooves of the tires ( I'm not sure how it is called ) are almost worn out, ( well may konti pa namang kapal ) but lately I've noticed that my tires would get easily punctured by this kind of debri that would sometimes be scattered on the road, i'm planning to upgrade or increase the tire size to 215/70 R15 or to 225/70 R15, these sizes will still fit the van, now changing to these sizes, will it have a negative effect on the performance of the van on the road ?

Any comments or suggestions will be most welcome. Thanks in advance. :thanks:

Re: Another Flat Tire

not a car expert but based on my experience, wider (fat) tires give you better grip, while larger series (70series versus 65 series)are not as stiff as the "smaller" ones. You got new tires na sir? 😉

Re: Another Flat Tire

I find 215s wide enough for most purposes, greater width=greater fuel consumption, but > breaking power, and I doubt it will lessen the chances of flat tire. Changing to new tires will lessen the incidence of flats since the rubber is still thicker, but nothing to do with the width.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

Re: Another Flat Tire

Hi Rosy,

The traction or grooves that you are referring to as called as tire "threads". I cringe whenever i see screws after the horrible and wallet traumatizing experiences I had before. I also know am very wary when passing through dirty roads specially near junk shops and metla scrap stores as you might not know the bits and pieces that your may pass on.

Moving on, you may go "wider" or you may go "taller" the choices you mentioned above are way above the 3% allowable difference that you could make in changing the tire sizes. I could suggest several possible combinations but I'm worried as our local supply are very limited. You could check the website below to further guide you on what are the possible tire size alternatives that you may use.

www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

Important: Always check on the maufacturing date of the tires. Get newer than 3 mos old tires. There are promos that tire shops give to unwary customers that the tires are already 4yrs old. Don't ask me how I knew this.

Check the sites for more info:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11
Are your new tires really 6-year old ticking time-bombs?

PS: No matter how wide, tall, thick you tire is a large screw or bolt has no mercy specially when it punctures the grooves where there is very little rubber and slashes through the steel belting inside.

Re: Another Flat Tire

Thank you all guys for the replies and bro jarod, thanks for the links and reminder regarding the changing of tire size.

Oh I have another story or experience that I would like to share again.

A week before Christmas last year, HAH, me not yet a member of the PHM community, coming down from Sumulong highway towards STA. LUCIA and ROBINSONS BIG R MALL for some X-mas shopping, while cruising at a not so fast pace, I felt a bump on my front wheels and I thought I just hit a pot hole so I just went straight and in reaching a little congested area in a U-turn slot, drivers on other cars and jeep were getting my attention and pointing their fingers somewhere down to the direction of the front tire, rolled down the window glass and asked what's wrong and someone shouted that my front wheel, driver's side is flat and I just realized that I have been driving from that Sumulong and Cogeo intersection down to STA. LUCIA east mall with a flat tire. 😮

Then realizing the situation, I slowly drove the van to the nearest gas station to see and check the flat tires. Ok to make the story short, I was not able to do some gift shopping, change with the spare tire, went home coz it was late already and the next day had the tire vulcanized and do you know what's embedded in the tire ? its an angled cut stainless square tubing, the ones with two pointed and sharp prongs, yung isa naka baon sa gulong at yung isa ay naka baluktok na. Well I guess that debri was thrown out intentionally in the street or may be fell from a flat bed truck delivering aluminum/stainless and glass somewhere, I just don't know. 😡 Well anyway that's another tire experience to tell/share. Thanks for having the patience to read this. 🙁

That's a very knee softening situation as there goes your money for a new tire.

Re: Another Flat Tire

my tires size is 215/65 R15, now ... i'm planning to upgrade or increase the tire size to 215/70 R15 or to 225/70 R15, these sizes will still fit the van, now changing to these sizes, will it have a negative effect on the performance of the van on the road ?

Theoretical diameters
215/65 R15 ... (215 x 0.65 x 2) + (15 x 25.4) = 660.5 mm original
215/70 R15 ... (215 x 0.70 x 2) + (15 x 25.4) = 682
225/70 R15 ... (225 x 0.70 x 2) + (15 x 25.4) = 696

In first proposal, speedometer/odometer would be reading 660.5/682 = 0.968 of 'true' speed/distance or about 3% less. In second proposal, 660.5/696 = 0.949 or about 5% less.

Readings could be corrected by multiplying by about 1.03 or 1.05, respectively.

Supposedly, the engine computer could also be recalibrated. Anyone had this done after a change in tire diameter?

What is the allowance over speed limit before getting a ticket on NLEX/SLEX/SCTEX ... 10? 20? 50%?

Re: Another Flat Tire

I had a flat last week. Pako nanaman. Sayang I lost it before I could take a picture, the nail was definitely not for construction - it was very thin, had angular sides, had a wide head, and was very sharp.
I've seen pieces of wood with embedded nails on roads conveniently near vulcanizing shops, so I wonder if this is one of those gimmiks for them to make a quick buck.

Re: Another Flat Tire

A few days ago. Right front tire ng GSR naipit ng 18 wheeler while it was turning right.

Exploded due to pressure. Nothing damaged naman except this tire. They settled for 3K. Anyway palitin na rin kasi medyo pudpod na. Will spend this money on computerized Camber and Alignment service ( 1.9K ) when I replace the tires. Right now I don't have a spare as it's currently installed.

Tinuklap ko lang yun goma kaya butas na ...

Re: Another Flat Tire

I can't imagine an18-wheeler and a GSR, and one one tire was damaged! 😮

If I was in the car you'd probably also be dealing with urine damage on the seats.
