Hey guys, need some assistance here, its about my jeep's front hood. Lately I've noticed that when the front engine hood is subjected to engine heat patches of small bubbles would appear, its as if the paints are on top are getting detached from the metal.

I know you'll simply say just bring it to the shop and let the car painting experts do the repairs.

I was thinking of DIYing it by myself since I have the necessary tools needed to finish the job, I have already the grinders, sanders, waxe/polisher the spray guns and recently purchased a portable 2hp compressor to complete the needed tools.

What I need now is to know the right kind of car paint to use, the kind of thinner to use, and the body fillers to use, the number of sand papers needed, what else, hindi ko na alam.

Well guys really need your help, anybody with the expertise is very much welcome. THANKS.

Re: Body painting your cars

I did the hood of our corolla sometime last year and so far it is still ok.

The paint i used was acrylic lacquer, the thinner was anzhal urethane thinner, acrylic clear for the top coat.

I did not need body filler for the hood but on the other small repairs i did on the car i used polytuff for large dents then used Glasurit glazing putty to finish.

I can't remember the exact grits of sandpaper i used for sanding down the filler but what i do remember is using 1000 to 1500 for sanding in between coats then using 2000-2500 for clearcoat sanding then using rubbing compound for final buffing.

I know there are more advanced automotive paint systems out there like urethanes but i don't have the proper safety equipment nor place to safely use them. I understand automotive urethanes contain something related to cyanide which can be absorbed thru eyes and skin.

dont forget to use at the very least a good mask with good paint filters..also try to read up on painting cars for more info..i even bought 2 books on the topic before getting started on the hood..

hope all goes well and do post WIPS when you paint your hood..;)

Re: Body painting your cars

Strip to metal starters...(optional unless burned paint or damaged)
1. Strip metal using paint stripper
2. Clean with soap n water
3. Let dry prior to painting

Thinner test, If previous paint will not be stripped
Observe the paints weakness by:
1. Use lacquer thinner to test for enamel paint or lacquer paint weakness
-- If paint is damage, you it could be lacquer based or enamel, you can not paint it with a much stronger paint like acrylic lacquer or urethane
2.Use Acrylic thinner to test for enamel paint, lacquer paint, acrylic lacquer paint weakness
-- If paint is damage you can not use a much stronger paint like urethane

Anyway, If you do not want to strip off the current paint, please spray it with primer epoxy to prevent stronger thinner to sip through the paint when added coats are applied.

Sand with fine grit and wash with soap and water prior to painting to remove wax and other residue build up.

Painting and putty
1. Use a body filler to cover the dents and scratches
2. Spray with epoxy primer, mixed with catalyst
-- I only use lacquer thinner on this, for cheaper cost
-- Use black to plain out the view if there is to much putty
-- Normally I use the gray for pre painted, and zinc cromate for bare metals
3. Paint with body color
4. Spray with clear top coat (I add a bit of color to top coat to add a gloss tint effect)
-- Using FLO to spread out the top coat evenly. Lacquer Flo for lacquer Acrylic Flo for Acrylic
5. Rub it with rubbing compound, or use wax with a polisher.

Re: Body painting your cars

If you have the budget.. I suggest to go for more quality paints and thinner.. they are easily applied because they dry easily.

Ex:
Acrylic Lacquer is better applied than Automotive Lacquer paints, its more durable and shines better. But urethane is better than acrylic paints, it is more resistant to heat and is more durable.

I use Acrylic lacquer on tight budget projects.. I don't use enamel or automotive lacquers. But on budgeted projects, I like to use urethane paint..

The paint i used was acrylic lacquer, the thinner was anzhal urethane thinner, acrylic clear for the top coat.

That was a smart approach to get more shine using a stronger thinner, it spreads out the paint evenly, no need for using acrylic Flo. This can only be done, if the car is not pre-painted with a weaker paint.

Anyway, sometime, I just mix thinner, to make the paint spread more evenly, and let it dry faster.

Re: Body painting your cars

mirror finished can achieve even if the Top Coat is not yet buff by a good preparation on the Base Coat - wet sand to the max, dont stop sanding if you still see some orange peel in the paint. a good mixture of thinner for top coat and a good spray setting will achieve mirror like finished.

btw, im using cheapo Php800 Muzi Spray Gun.

Wow, 5 coatings of top coat... mirror shine na... wala pang buff..

Re: Body painting your cars

Anyway, for your 2hp compressor, that could be a lot of air pressure. I've seen jayL posted an air regulator in the aircompressor thread that could help in minimizing sudden rise in air pressure. Also the water seperator, will squeeze out the remaining water in the tank, thus preventing it from mixing into your paint.

Anyway, I've seen this regulator seperator w/guage at Tools from Us cubao.
