Dead instrument cluster

The battery of our 2-year old Hyundai Tucson died. Before we had it replaced the dashboard instruments were working fine. Its just that the engine won't start.

After the Motolite guy installed the new battery, the indicators are now dead. :sob: Tachometer, speedometer and fuel gauge are at zero. No display on the LCD odometer/trip computer, but the backlight works. Oil indicator is always on.

Other indicators are working fine, meaning they light up when I turn the ignition key to ON and turnoff when the engine is already running. Handbrake indicator is also working.

The says there are two fuses for "instrument cluster". Both are not blown. Also checked other
fuses and I didn't find any of them blown.

Hyundai quoted 32K for the instrument cluster replacement. I'm not going to shell out that amount without a fight. :samurai: Any ideas how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance!! :thanks:

Re: Dead instrument cluster

I'd probably start with an official report from Hyundai as to what caused the breakdown of the instrumentation panel.

Re: Dead instrument cluster

Curious too to know how a failing battery could damage the instruments.

Would an accidental wrong polarity when putting in a new battery do this. Something to find out, if only to eliminate it as a possible cause.

Battery and instruments not covered by warranty? How long the Hyundai warranty?

Could some smaller component be repaired/replaced instead of the entire cluster.

Re: Dead instrument cluster

@Jay,

Unfortunately there is no detailed diagnostic report. They happened to have another Tucson being serviced. They simply swapped the instrument clusters and declared ours needed replacement.

@guad,

The battery was installed correctly the first time so there was no reverse-polarity scenario. I'm wondering too why none of the fuses gave way. Hyundai warranty is 5 years or 100,000km. But our unit got a bit drenched by Ondoy (3 inches above floor level) and they say this voided the warranty. Still negotiating with them because this problem is definitely not due to flood damage.

Yes, I think it can be just a blown diode/capacitor. I'm now trying to figure out how to dismount the cluster from the dashboard.

Re: Dead instrument cluster

Hi there joey81,

I myself am buffled by the situation of your car and curious too on your failed battery. Its natural of course a dead battery cannot anymore supply power to the engine and all the various instrumentations with in, ok after replacing a brand new battery try looking for a good auto electrician and have all the fuses inspected and checked if they are still in good conditions, if busted, replace them and see how each instrumentations on the panel, if it works or not. 🙁 😀

I know all instruments on the panel have their own fuses, even the lights, inside and outside, oil indicators, temperature gauge, horn, signal and backing lights etc etc etc. 🙂 :p

Re: Dead instrument cluster

@Joey

This is a freaking problem. 32K 😮 Can buy a Makita thicknesser for that amount and still have some change.

If local Hyundai dealer can't help then I'd take the issue to Korea. I once had a new 1985 Civic that had some noisy axles when doing a turn ( happened just after the warranty expired). All my research pointed that I had a probable factory defect but the dealer kept ignoring me. One fax message to Honda Japan and I got this call from the dealer I purchased it that they want to check the car again. New axles installed free of charge.

How can water damage an instrument cluster when it didn't even reach it. I would demand this in a written report if they claim it was but that's just me.

Re: Dead instrument cluster

Thanks for the tip, Jay.

My wife works for a Korean company in Ortigas. Her bosses can help us. I think I made the wrong move when I told her about your suggestion.

Maybe I should have tried fixing it myself first. And if successful I'll ask her to buy me a 2012NB. :diablo:

Yeah I hope you get warranty. Honda's move had changed my car buying decisions since then. Twenty six years later I still buy only Honda. Only my wife buy other brands. If it was me it would be a Honda. LOL

Re: Dead instrument cluster

the problem here is that the cluster is electrical in nature, hardly does electrical parts get warrantied. They are always prone to damage like water, wrongly installed battery(even for a split second), welding done without battery removal and the like. mechanical parts on the otherhand is a different story, if an item shows defect pointing to manufacturer fault, even after warranty they will attend to it since it is clearly their fault.
good luck on the try though I wouldn't my hopes up....
