gusto ko po sana i-diy ang pag repair and repaint ng bumper na nakuha ko in surplus condition instead na ipagawa ko sa mga auto bodyshops para makatipid sana and at the same time matutunan ko din. ang mga questions ko po are:
1. what are the tools needed para ma-prepare ko na lahat before umpisahan ang project?
2. anu po yung tamang procedure pag paint including repairs ng mga dents/scratches sa bumper?
3. need po ba ng compressor para pag paint or meron mga spray guns that does not need compressor?
sana may makapagbigay po ng inputs. thanks!
Re: diy bumper repair and repaint
I have painted the car here at home before, and what i can say is the prep work you do before actual painting will make all the difference.
What is the condition of the bumper? If you are intending to do the whole bumper then i suggest stripping the old paint first. If not then remove all the loose or damaged paint with sandpaper. If the bumper is metal then i suggest spraying epoxy primer on the bare metal first (if u stripped to bare metal)
You will then need to fill any defects with Polytuff or something like it. Sand smooth then put primer on it. If still not level then put putty again and sand then primer. This is the important part of painting. As any defects here will show even after multiple coats of paint.
When satisfied with the putty work and primer, sand the primer smooth then start the color coat. You may want to wet sand the color coat with very low grit sandpaper or spray the clear first then wet sand with progressive grits of fine sandpaper (1200 -2500).
When you have reached the 2500 grit, you can move to rubbing compund then rub till you get mirror like results.
Now this is a very very basic outline of the process. There are lots of variations in painting, first being the paint system to use. I only have tried acrylic lacquer, so i dont know how the newer urethanes go. But the basic process is the same i think. Good luck! and please post lots of pics!
Re: diy bumper repair and repaint
The most important tools for painting your bumper are the spray gun and compressor. Other than that, the sandpaper, sanding block, paleta are the other basic items you will need. If you have the budget, an electric polisher/buffer can be used, if no budget then cloth and hardwork will do.
Hope that helps in getting you started..just ask if you have more questions, im sure others will help too.
Re: diy bumper repair and repaint
buying a quality spray gun alone might be more expensive than a brand new painted bumper, let alone a compressor...
welcome to PHM, sorry for the reply but its a fact that tooling is an expensive aspect of life... enjoy your stay... 😀

Re: diy bumper repair and repaint
Addional Tips : All of the above plus
Dont try to paint when weather is not good..i.e rainy or cloudy or humid coz
humidity = water in air...
water + spray paint = bad
high humidity + spsray paint= bad paint job lots of bubbles and bulotong even 3 days after application..
Pag nag clear coat ka sa high humidity= foggy coat
:p :p
Re: diy bumper repair and repaint
repairing and painting an already painted bumper seems complicated for a beginner like me. maybe i should try painting my car's front chin first since it's not yet painted and made of OEM plastic. what are the preparations and tools needed to begin this project...which include removing/repairing deep scratches from the plastic before painting?
thanks for the inputs guys! i really would like to learn how to repair and paint auto body parts.
