There is some rusting on the rear lip wheelwells of my car.

Saka any other things that I should know about before attempting this is appreciated. Salamat

Re: Fiberglass Question

I work with fiberglass and epoxy on my wooden boat so my experience is limited on wood.

But epoxy sticks to metal anyway so I see no problem using it on your car body. Just make sure you expose the bare metal. Epoxy resins and fiberglass are available at Polymer Products Philippines (google the website). But their resins are available only by the gallon so that would be too much for your needs. If you do find it available in small quantities, I suggest you mix it with StopSag, a very light white powder that thickens the epoxy to putty consistency and does not sag/drip so it can hold its shape until it dries.

They do have a Polypatch product which is used as body filler but I have no experience on it so cannot make any suggestions.

Make sure you search this site on how to apply epoxy. You will need some protection from contact (allergies) and will work in a short window as the epoxy cures while working with it.

Re: Fiberglass Question

i can't recall the precise reasons but i remember being strongly advised against fiberglass restores for the car - especially if you plan to keep the car.

Re: Fiberglass Question

Hmmm...probably a rule for faithful restorations. Fiberglass is not an uncommon material for car bodies.

But, again, I am no expert on car repair.

Re: Fiberglass Question

Don't they use fiberglass for body kits? I think they have special composites for areas that have to be reinforced or have issues w/ body integrity. POLYMER PRODUCTS PHILIPPINES also sells KEVLAR MATS and composite resins you may use for higher strength requirements. The term RESTORATION means to be faithful to the original. Zepol and Ding, I think, are correct about restorers avoiding other substitutes like fiberglass.

Re: Fiberglass Question

Hi, I just bought some fiberglass mat, chemicals and hardener. I was being ambitious on making a diy repair on some rusted parts on my vehicle but i don't know how to start it, lol.

I was imagining i would run a wire brush on the rusted parts/holes. After exposing bare metal and the holes de-rusted, i was thinking i would put fiberglass over the holes and wait for it to harden. Then after the fiberglass hardens, i would paint epoxy primer over the fiberglass. Thereafter put some body filler, sand and smoothen it out, then paint. Is the process i outlined correct? I don't know if the fiberglass mat would even stick on bare metal. Any inputs would be highly appreciated. Thank you!
