Re: primer for plastic panels

For scale models i make which contain plastic parts, i use the Plylox or other equivalent ( i think its Acrylic epoxy or laquer) rattle cans. It doesn't seem to melt the plastic.

I may be wrong but I think you should really start of with an Adhesion Promotor (well, that's what Dupont calls their stuff, but then maybe it's the generic name for it). As a friend who owns a paint shop uses these on body claddings, canopies first before they paint these items and eventually mounting them on the automobiles. HTH

Safety first - always wear face/eye/ear/hand protection as a minimum.

Re: primer for plastic panels

I think the term "adhesion promoter" IS the general term for it. It has to be applied on the plastic surface prior to any actual paint job is to be done (read more). now as for Nippon, I'm not really familiar, but maybe you could start off with this page from Nippon. HTH.

Re: primer for plastic panels

There was mention of epoxy. Just be careful that, while epoxy adheres to wood and metal, it does not adhere well to some plastics. I know this because I use epoxy in boatbuilding and would wrap my clamps in cellophane tape so they won't get stuck. Polyethylene (PE) sheets also do not adhere. In the case of car bumpers, I think they're made of ABS so not sure if it will stick. There's just too many plastics. I once painted my car's bumper with spray on paint and it just flaked off. I'd do some tests before applying a primer.

Re: primer for plastic panels

hi andrew, prior the color coat, try adding some plasticiser, it's available in all automotive paint centers, you have to mix this on your color paint. this makes the paints more flexible and elastic that prevents shrinkage and breakage when subject to extreme temperatures and vibrations. . .hope this helps. . .
