Hi guys! I really need some help here. i'm trying a DYI paint job on my car and no one is teaching me but online research.

I really need to know if i can sand a newly applied jet black PolyGloss urethane paint with a 2000 grit sand paper before applying top coat? Thanks in advance... 🙂

@iTech,
yes, you can wet sand the base paint before applying the top coat to remove the orange peel... oh btw, 1500 grit is just enough for me.
you can check my diy painting here: http://www.pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?p=19692#post19692

i'm really afraid that all my sanding marks will show under the top coat... thanks for your quick reply!

i would like to put some tribal flames on both sides of my car. what would u suggest i use for making the pattern, masking tape or you have a better solution?

what im using is just a masking tape, i think the painter's tape is much better to use but i havent tried it yet... or you can design a tribal flame sticker and have it cut using computerized sticker cutter then apply the top coat...

@iTech,
you dont need to buy computerized sticker cutter, you can go to malls and have them cut according to your designs, they have several sticker colors to choose from. enjoy!

Re: Can I sand my newly applied black paint before applying top coat?

Hi Ossie!

i got a little problem but i know it's been bugging me for a week now. i made a little mistake when an insect flew directly on my paint flow path while applying same jet black urethane paint. I let it dry for a couple of hours then sand it down and leveled it. sadly i overdone it and exposed some body filler. when i applied a coat of same jet black paint... it looked okay at first but then after a while it started to crumple. i sanded it down again and applied same urethane paint but it keeps coming back and it's getting bigger every time. what am i doing wrong? please help... 🙁

Hmmm...it shouldn't crumple if you're using the same paint material. Did you apply primer after the body filler? If you did, you must have sanded the primer as you mentioned that the body filler is already exposed.

Just my two cents, let's wait for our American Idol Ossie :thumbup:

Re: Can I sand my newly applied black paint before applying top coat?

it's crumpling around the edge near the thin layer of paint and the exposed body filler. i used an acrylic lacquer for my primer though... would that be bad? it never had given me problems when i first have the first coat. why now? :(any solutions on this?

Re: Can I sand my newly applied black paint before applying top coat?

sorry for the late reply heheh but i think you already finished painting your project.

i guess your base coat reacted on the body filler that is why its started to bubble or crumple. if you are going to ask me what to do next, my answer is you need to sand the affected parts, wash with soap, then apply primer again, base coat and top coat 🙂
