Well I have to interrupt my current metal project for this emergency repair. I got caught up in a heavy downpour a few days ago and its so difficult driving with a busted windshield wiper. Got to find out for myself what caused this to happen and found out the bracket attachment became detached from the metal frame and also the metal sheet got torn apart maybe due to the force of the windshield wiper that caused it to be so disalligned.

What I will be doing here is a very simple DIY replacement of the flimsily welded and lousy fabrication of the metal bracket done by lousy mechanics probably during conversion of the van from right to left hand drive.

Here are some pics I took these past two days while working on the wiper as insisted by swmbo to bother and post the DIY repair. Oh well sige na nga even though its not really that significant.

I started dismantelling the two large wipers and the cover grille.

Then there is the culprit, the flimsily welded metal plate bracket detached from the main frame and torn apart.

Continuation of the DIY repair.

A closer look at the damage metal bracket.

Here is the mechanism exposed where you attach the wiper.

Re: WINDSHIELD WIPER base bracket replacement

Here I was able to take this thin metal sheet bracket by patiently grinding and cutting the welded part.

Started working on the metal bracket, cut a piece of metal sheet from my metal scrap, good thing I have some scrap, its 1.5mm thick and have to use my nibbler cause the large metal shear(scissors) was having a hard time cutting the sheet. Bore and drilled some holes that will fit the wiper mechanism. Did also some pounding on the sides of the plate to make the metal sheet more sturdier.

Here is the finished sturdier and thicker metal bracket.

Here I'm showing how thick is the newly fabricated metal sheet bracket, its 1.5mm thickness compared to the other which is only 0.8mm thick.

Re: WINDSHIELD WIPER base bracket replacement

In this pic the metal bracket has been welded and the wiper mechanism attached. SO SORRY
I was not able to take pics of the welding process because I was already in a hurry that it was getting dark and rain started to pour and I was really soaking wet due to perspiration and due to extreme humidity. The process of welding was so slow because I have to be very carefull of the thin metal frame where I am attaching the bracket might get all consumed by the welding rod while welding. I have to slowly tack weld or bead weld one at a time and also careful enough not to burn the windshield because the metal frame was just inches away. I have to wrap the whole area of soaking wet basahan exposing only the part that i was welding.

Oh how I wish I had a mig welder or a tig welder now, it could have been easier and faster, well I guess I just have to do with what is available, an ordinary Yamato stick welder.

Here showing the two pics with the grilles and the wipers already attached and assembled, I'll do the testing tomorrow whether all the wipers are properly aligned and working. Ah its getting late and I am very hungry, time to make ligpit, gathered all the tools that I've used for this very simple metal bracket.

It amazes me making this very simple metal bracket, 4" x 4 1/4", would entail the use of these several power tools plus the use of the welding machine. Anyway I'm satisfied with the result of my repair and am sure it will last longer that the first one.

THANKS FOR VIEWING THE PICS PATIENTLY.

Re: WINDSHIELD WIPER base bracket replacement

Yeah the job would have been made easier using a Mig Welder.

If I was to do that using an Arc Welder then most probably I'd use rods for stainless steel. Arc is softer.

Do I see a Nibbler in the lot of tools used for this bracket installation? I've never seen one in action.

Nice job bro. With DIY we always have control of the work quality.

Re: WINDSHIELD WIPER base bracket replacement

Thank you all guys, sir JayL, sir jonathancruz68 and sir pyth,

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement, I know in my heart this wiper DIY replacement was not supposed to be posted since its a very simple and minute task to be done, it was only through the insistence of swmbo that I take pics of my repair and share it sa PHM.
That is why medyo kulang kulang ang mga pics, so sorry po, 🙂 :dunno:

I was hoping to post something more concrete and maybe exciting that everyone will enjoy seeing and possibly learning from it also, nevertheless its posted already and I'll simply leave the judgement to the viewers. :p

THANKS a lot guys, :thanks:
