Dead processor?

About 3 to 5 minutes into using my laptop computer (Toshiba-Satellite-A505-S6960 running Vista), it suddenly froze. Mouse not moving. Caps-lock LED does not change when I press caps-lock. Same with the num-lock LED.
Keyboard not working.

Maybe a power cycle will work. Pressed the power button until it powered off. Pressed the power button again to turn it on. Nothing showed up on the screen, blank. The hard-drive activity led is off. It just sits there doing nothing.

Any ideas how to wake it up?

Re: Dead processor?

Bro joey81,

Baka nag crush na hard drive mo kaya tumigil na lahat. Maybe if you have time tomorrow you can bring your Laptop sa MICRO COMPUTERS, its a computer shop with good technicians, its just near your place, across STA. LUCIA Grand East Mall. on the other side going to Marikina. Sa kabilang kanto ng MacDo, on the right side.

That's where I bring our computer if repairs or additional programs are needed. They charge fair enough for parts, libre pa nga yata for check up or consultations.

Good luck bro and sorry about your TOSHIBA !!!! 🙁

Re: Dead processor?

I hoped you had made backup of your important files if any.

Could it be a memory problem? If you can swap the memories on the banks then it's a good way to do a basic test. No boot can be caused by a memory problem on the first bank.

Re: Dead processor?

or maybe motherboard, a bad processor will still usually give out error beeps. On a bad HDD, you will still see the bootup screen, and then it will show no boot disk, or error finding a HDD.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

That did the trick! I just shuffled the memory modules and it booted! How could I have forgotten? A decade ago this would be the first thing that I'd try. Thanks for reminding me!

Thanks for the info, bro rosy! This will be useful in the future, but I'm not looking forward to it. 😀

😀

I suspect a defective parity bit on the first bank module. Since it's now on the secondary bank it can freeze the computer again if it is hit. I hope I'm wrong.

Re: Dead processor?

Toshiba Notebooks nowadays are not as reliable as they used to be. We have numerous units of it in the office and one by one they are starting to fail. Motherboards, power adaptor, harddrives, keyboards and lcd panels. Luckily they are still under warranty (3-years). Buying this with a 1-year warranty will get you into the loosing end. We eventually shifted to HP which is doing well, but in the future we might shift to Lenovo if they agree to a 5-year warranty as with our desktops.
