Sir saan po nyo gagamitin? I assume na "small dc motors" eh hindi puwede sa application nyo.
A car alternator can be converted into a 12 volt DC motor po. High torque po ang mga alternator especially if you could find one for a Ford 150 or better.
I usually go to warehouse surplus shops - sa Cebu meron po near sa port area where items like these could be found. Baka meron din po sa Manila. 🙂

I used to work for Lear corporation (automotive electronics) and have come across DIY ideas using alternators.
an alternator is an AC motor however in its normal operation it is used to charge car batteries. A battery being DC could not be charged using AC so we need to rectify the output (put diodes) to remove the negative flow and only have "positive" current flow. This is achieved by providing a way for the armature (rotating part) to rotate inside a magnetic field (usually from fixed magnets) and thus providing current flow to the terminals. This configuration is usually used for DIY wind mills because you do not need current controllers when hooking up to a car battery. All you need are giant windmill blades, strong enough wind to rotate the armature, and the contacts of the alternator is connected to the car battery. The diode is already embedded inside the terminal of the alternator.
However, if you do the reverse. If you supply current to the alternator terminals, the flow is reversed and the effect is rotating the motor. You have to supply 12V or what the rating of the motor is (usually 13.5V or 12V for alternators). You can step down the 220V AC to 12V AC or find a 12V-13.5V DC power supply for your alternator to turn.
Speed is inversely proportional to Torqe. When your motor reaches max speed, it typically has min to 0 torque. So how would you be able to open a 200lb gate? Gearbox or typically converting multiple revolutions of the driver gear into fewer/more revolutions of the driven gear. This creates a very strong pulling/pushing force and if balanced properly, the effect is a smooth opening or closing of a gate.
I haven't done this myself - I don't have a gate that needs to be motorized.
(I am however planning to set up a DIY windmill - and promote green power hahaha...)
And most likely if I need a gate that big, I'd hire a security guard to do the opening and the closing with the extra benefit of a shotgun for protection 🙂

Wow, that's a very good idea. Sounds feasible. All one would need is a set of smooth tracks and proximity sensors to avoid accidents.
question lang about high torque DC motor ... are car wiper motor or car windshield motor considered high torque 12v DC servo motors? ... my plan is to use any of these (surplus) motors for the rotisserie of the steel drum barbecue grill that i'm also currently working on ... cheers

Hi Boo! Looks like we have some common ideas (the one is the silent generator box).
Why DC motor? I've been thinking os using washing machine motor from junk shops.
@ fourtheboys96, oo nga eh 🙂 he he he ... in my readings, some have done it using these type of motors. i also read about others using a washing machine motor. but i think it's a bit of an over kill to use a washing machine motor for my requirements - i'll only be roasting liempos and probably 2 lechon manoks at a time. add to that, the washing machine motor is quite big - it would not look nice, a big thing like that, sticking out at the side of the steel drum barbecue grill. plus i also have to consider mounting some gears (worst scenario) with the motor to slow down the rotation.
i also read that instead of using gears to slow down the motor, you can use a PWM (pulse wave modulation) - it's some sort of an electronic pcb board. what it does is it gives burst of current to the motor at certain intervals which cause the motor to move just a little bit at a time. with the continous burst + the momentum it causes on the motor, theoretically, the motor will move at a slow pace thus causing your rotisserie to rotate gradually. this is what i plan to use instead of gears to slow down the motor's rotation. the big question is can i make this PWM board using a 12v DC (or AC) as power to a motor? i already have the tools for doing it + other materials for my home automation project.
if i can find a worm type motor (i think car windshield motors are this type) that would be the best as i can use it in a lot of things for my home automation projects - e.g. open/close window curtains sideways, up/down window blinds, or pang todo ambition ko ... even use it for a retractable awing in our roof deck 🙂 ha ha ha ... cheers
