Re: Solar Panels

Re the earlier comment about $5 per watt or less.

I heard sometime ago that you can get around $2 per watt, made in China, but that they do not last long. At least that is what one dealer told me. Of course, they were selling their own imported (German, if I remember correctly) brand at more than $2 per watt.

I hope the $1 per watt ones now ramping up in production could start becoming more easily available soon.

Re: Solar Panels

interesting subject since the continuing electric cost.

since its already a few year old topic , baka me nadagdag na info na on how much would an initial cost of installing a few panels DIY style.

@sir boyd ok pa po nba yun pipes nyo?di ba sya naging brittle due to the heat in the ceiling , being too near to the roof?any sktech or dimensions on how did you installed it to your ceiling?

Re: Solar Panels

I have a 20 watts panel installed on the roof (DIY) of our house right now supplying a 12-28 volts DC exhaust fan. I used to trickle charge a 12volts car battery before but I realized that I can maximize the use if I direct connect it to that exhaust fan thereby not converting the excess power to heat. I bought it at sulit but I can not remember the seller name. I cant remember how much I bought it but I think it paid off already if I use a 220volts exhaust fan running at least 8 hours a day. The other costly material you need is the royal chord which cost an arm and leg if your application is far from the solar panel. The only maintenance you have to do is to wipe the solar panel when the dirt starts to build up. Otherwise the panel life is about 20 years (as far as forum and the sellers said about the time I bought it). Lastly, if you would like to DIY the installation, you can buy some scrap aluminum from the glass and aluminum shop and use it as its base and rivet it (I rivet mine on the yero and put some waterproofing).

Re: Solar Panels

Guys have anyone of you tried to make a solar system to power a 1hp aircon? I can get free window type a/c from work but i want to power it solar. Like a solar generator that u can also use to power other appliances pag malamig panahin and no nid for a/c.Any suggestions?

Possible... but u would need a big array of batteries and a high capacity inverter/solar charger/controller to do this... not to mention a couple of hi ampere solar panel to charge your bank of batteries.

Re: Solar Panels

@dash01,

Read about net-metering. ERC has passed a bill last July 2013 concerning net-metering. In my opinion, this is more advisable than investing your money on huge battery bank and solar array, particularly when running an aircondition.

I'm using offgrid solar setup just to offset portion of my monthly electricity bill.

Hi Con78788,

does your solar panel setup dented your electricity bill?, can you give a rough estimate?... thanks

Re: Solar Panels

Yes, it does dented my monthly bill halos 30% ang nabawas kasi lahat ng lighting circuits ko ay dependent sa offgrid setup.

Always remember sa pagde-design ng solar system palaging nagsisimula yan sa computation ng load consumption rather than buying all the components then fix the problem later. That's a bad practice.

Sample and simple calculation goes like this:

> 20 Watts CFL bulb x 12 Hours = 240 Watt Hours / 6 Hours sunny day = 40 Watts Solar Panel.

You could use a 5 Amp charge Controller.
> 40 Watts Panel / 12 V = 3.3A, round it off to 5A

For the battery bank capacity, you may use 110Ah @ 12V.
> Load: 1 piece 20W Bulb x 12 Hours / 0.80 = 300 Wh / day. Where 0.80 is the inverter efficiency.

> 300Wh/12V = 25Ah (d)

Sa pagde-design ng battery bank you should consider the following factors:

Ah(a) = Amp Hour Adjusted
Ah(d) = Amp Hour Daily
TC = Temperature Compensation.
DA = Days of Autonomy. Assuming 2 days na continuous na umuulan at di ka makapag-charge ng battery.
DM = Design Margin. Wiring losses.
DOD = Depth Of Discharge. 50% is the recommended DOD for FLA type battery. Kasi kapag palaging sagad yong battery it shorten the life cycle of the battery.

So:
> Ah(a) = Ah(d) x TC x DA X DM / DOD.
> Ah(a) = 25Ah x 1.00 X 2 X 1.10 / 50%
> Ah(a) = 110Ah. So ang capacity ng battery mo dapat ay 110Ah @ 12V.

Sa inverter, puwede kang gumamit ng 200 Watts inverter.
> 240 Watt hour x 0.80 inverter efficiency = 192 Watts, round it off to 200 Watts @ 12V

Re: Solar Panels

I've been using
120 watts solar panel from CDR king,
12V- 20A MPPT Charge Controller
100 AH deep cycle Battery (Motolite Solar Master)

6PCS 5w LED Lights
2 USB cigarette Socket - Cellphone Charger
12Vdc - electric Fan
12Vdc - LED TV 22"
Plus output terminals for 12V and 5V for other Loads

Meron ako Modified sine wave inverter (1000watts) but I don't Use it kasi loss pa rin sa conversion kaya stick na lang ako sa mga 12Vdc supply na appliances.

I make sure din na hindi nababa masyado ang charge ng Battery para di agad masira... (Been using it for a year now and OK pa rin)

In case of night time ikaw lang ang may ilaw.... problem pag marami GAMU-GAMO.... SAYO lahat ang punta ng insekto pati kapit bahay....

Dun sa isang bahay ng mother ko eh
100 watts monocrystalline cells panel ang gamit
then the rest eh same na sa taas.. (TV eh 19 inches lang na 12V)
