Now a days life or living in the metropolis has become so hectic and so stressful due to progress, modernization and demands in place of work. Workforce coming from the nearby provinces have flocked in the metropolis to find work and earn a living, and with the booming constructions of highrise condominiums and townhouses left and right, though with small spaces to offer, many have decided to transfer and live in this structures to avoid the daily hassles of commuting and wasting hours in traffic jams. 😮

Dwellers in this condominiums and townhouses wanting to have some sort of a garden but with so little space to spare , what could be another alternative way to put their favorite potted plants like bromeliads, flowering impatiens, roses, fern collections or possibly their kitchen herbs etc etc if they could not expand their plant collections horizontally ? :bee:

So again for plant lovers and home gardeners, lets share and post our suggestions and know how, our ideas and insights on how to start a personal vertical garden. :thanks:

Re: CREATING your own DIY VERTICAL GARDEN

I know next to nothing about green wall, but am wonderiing:

soil vs. Patrick Blanc soil-less style
(the commercially available imported plastic containers for soil style are too expensive for large scale)

locally available material for moisture retention mat in soil-less style ... rockwool ? where to get synthetic felt ?

solution to use ... same as for hydroponics, SNAP ?

where to see examples, indoor, outdoor

local experts/consultants/resource persons/suppliers

best plants for indoor green wall

best plants for outdoor green wall

anyone done locally something like in this aptly named blog, DIY Greenwalls

Re: CREATING your own DIY VERTICAL GARDEN

OK, with regards to this topic, How do we define or explain what really is a Vertical Garden ?

A vertical garden or gardening is the process of using or utilizing a vertical space to grow plants or vegetables in a small space. It is a way of using different available materials so that clinging trails and vines can hold onto while growing or where small potted plants can be attached or hanged side by side to create a vertical or upright garden.

A vertical garden is just perfect for urban settings and environment where flooring spaces are limited. It is perfect for small homes, apartments, townhouses or owners of highrise condominium units.

Vertical gardening is a very practical way to create or have a personal garden in an upright position, perfect for units in townhouses or condominiums owners that cannot anymore accommodate favorite potted plants due to limited space or flooring area. In vertical gardening, garden enthusiast will work on his garden upwards or vertically instead of spreading his plants horizontally. :bee:

Well there are various ways to create a personal DIY vertical garden., for example is by the use of wooden trellis attached to a wall wherein small potted plants can be hanged or the use of wire matting or plastic wire mesh wherein favorite potted trailing or clinging vines can hold on while growing upwards or maybe using triangular multi- shelf metal racks positioned in corners of a terrace or balcony where rare collections of bromeliads or african violets can be displayed.

Maybe one can hang several layers of ingenious materials horizontally like large bamboo or pvc drain pipes cut in half prepared and varnished or painted, then possibly planted with herbs, colorful varieties of lettuce, or hanging plants or spider plants. One just have to be creative and innovative to come up with ways to create a DIY vertical garden. 💡 :tounge2:

Re: CREATING your own DIY VERTICAL GARDEN

when i was a kid, i've heard that plants on walls tend to 'destroy' them (cracking) - is this myth or true?

for several weeks already i've been contemplating on having this setup on the firewall side of the house to sort of hide the cables and telephone lines! 😉

i'll post a pic of the "naked" firewall later or tomorrow.

Re: CREATING your own DIY VERTICAL GARDEN

when i was a kid, i've heard that plants on walls tend to 'destroy' them (cracking) - is this myth or true?

Hey bro spyghost, when I was younger and building my house and fencing the property, I have invision of planting this kind of vine or ivy beside the fences to cover the concrete fence and save me from finish plastering it and spend some money in some paint job. I am glad I never pushed through with it coz according to my son, now that he is a professional landscape architect, its a big no no for them or their organization to suggest such undertakings. So it is true, plants that clings to walls destroys the surface and eventually the whole structure in the long run. Fine roots eventually find ways to get in the walls tiny/minute crevices and there starts to grow and loosens the concrete cement as time goes by and in no time small and large cracks will appear on the wall surface. 😮

My take to this is to install a separate metal, plastic or wooden trellis where your intended plants/vines can cling and grow separately living your walls free. I personally think it is safer that way specially if you are thinking of doing it on your house firewall, you might be in for a big surprise in the long run. Yes it may beautify the firewall for the mean time but you might regret it afterwards.

HOPE THIS HELPS and somehow clear the notion that its ok to let clinging vines/ivys cover a wall or a fence surface. 😉 :p

so it's alright to have something on the firewall but not directly on the walls? hmmm... steel matting that produces a few inches off the wall? perhaps my wife will allow me to buy a welding machine this time :p
