Hi, guys! Are you familiar with solar garden LED lights like the ones in the picture below? I saw them being sold at sulit.com.ph ( http://ecosolarstore.sulit.com.ph ) at 400 pesos each.

I just want to know if they are really good and will last. I am thinking of putting more lights in the grotto-garden. I just don't want the hassle of the installing the wires, etc, the main reason I am thinking of these solar lights.

Basic specs below:

* 1 PC- LED SUPER BRIGHT LIGHT SERIES ( 1 watt )
* WATERPROOF DESIGN
* BLACK PLASTIC ELEGANT DESIGN
* WITH Ni-Cd RECHARGEABLE BATTERY
* LIGHT AND DURABLE
* NO WIRING NEEDED
* FULLY AUTOMATIC - ON AT NIGHT AND OFF AT DAY
* LED LIGHT HEAD DIAMETER 4 INCH
* FINISHED HEIGHT 15 INCH
* 6 TO 8 HRS CHARGING TIME
* FAST AND EASY TO INSTALL
* ENERGY SAVING ( NO ADDED MERALCO BILL )
* EUROPEAN QUALITY STANDARD

Re: Solar Garden Lights

had gotten one of the smaller units from ace before and it proved to be inadequate. the light was so dim it hardly had any effect in a 6 inch radius from the unit.

Thanks for the reply, goldrat. That's what I was afraid of since there is only 1 pc of 1W LED bulb in each light.

Re: Solar Garden Lights

My experience before was that the lights would give up around midnight, altho this may not be a problem if you're not using it as part of a security measure of sort.

I was using six units of the smaller type, each unit inside contained only one piece of AAA Ni-Cd cell.

Re: Solar Garden Lights

LED solar lights are adequate only for mood lighting effect, it is totally inadequate for garden or walkways area lighting, it also quits after 6 hours even with good quality rechargeable batteries. Bought mine for 240 pesos at HMR pasig.

Good and promising concept. Haven't seen any good execution yet.

For the attempt cited, use of nickel cadmium is a non-starter.

Re: Solar Garden Lights

Sir i installed 6 around 2 years ago sa bahay namin. I agree it is on good for moodlighting and not security. It was very very nice though.

Problem was the rehargeable battery would need to be replaced so often that it becomes exoensive. The constant solar charing and drain takes its toll so quickly opn the batteries that you would need to change almost every quarter and in the long run it is just isnt worth it anymore. Likewise the battery comparment isnt airtight not waterproof that it needs to be maintained lest suffer corrotion.

thanks, john-jo. this could mean i still have to use the ordinary light bulbs or fluorescent lamp or CFLs, for they would be more reliable.

i agree.

Ni-Cd should have been phased out already. i remember my first mobile phone many years ago. noikia 1610. Ni-Cd battery. one time i forgot it charging at home. i was already in makati, and i had to back to alabang, just to unplug it. mahirap na. baka sumabog eh.

Re: Solar Garden Lights

Got a dozen of these 6 years ago when I was in the US and saw it on sale at Target, a little more than PHP1000 then. Real bargain. Set it up on the steps of my front door and some in my backyard.

Never count on them for illumination. But they do look very nice, flanking the steps up my front door and lining my backyard. But they start to dim by around 9 to 10PM and completely out by 12. I guess, if you're having a garden party, they're good for mood lighting then you drive out your guests by midnight.

Mine lasted about 2 years until the dogs realized they made fantastic playthings. Didn't break my heart, though as the lights were showing a lot of wear by that time. Solar cells accumulated a lot of crud and plastic started to crack. I'd buy another set if I find them on sale for the same price and be prepared tothrow them away after two years.
