@ petermagboo, as much as possible, avoid banana trees. they are like magnets for mosquitos based on my experience ... as for the ylang-ylang (not the dwarf variety), just take note, as these trees are planted along the hi-way road in our area, they really grow to quite a very tall tree (e.g. 2x that of an electric post). if you plant them in front of your house in Manila, then you will have to prune the trees every year to limit it's height and let it's branches spread horizontally for shade ... cheers

I've got nothing against planting few varieties of banana trees if you have enough space in your property, just make sure you keep them surroundings clean and tidy. We have several in my property and enjoy yearly produce of Saba, Turdan or Lakatan.

Ylang Ylang, what do you get from this huge tree but only the fragrant flowers, as for shades, I do not know cause my sister has one planted in her property and its not shady at all, sort of very similar to a Kapok tree with very large trunk and very tall, taller than a coconut tree.

Enjoy your plants !! :thumbup::springsmile::flower1:

Boo

Thanks for the information. But I am referring to the Banaba Tree and not banana tree. The banaba trees have purple flowers and look amazing when its full of flowers. Are the roots destructive ?As for the ylang ylang, other than pruning the tree, are the roots also invasive/destructive?

to rosy,

the fragrant flowers of ylang-ylang are superb. I am just wondering if I plant it near the house, if it is really big, would the roots destroy my fence ? wall ? or drainage pipes ?. Thanks

@ petermagboo,

Sorry about the Banaba tree, my bad for responding immediately too with regards to Banana plantings.

Anyway, with regards to the Banaba tree, yes it produces very beautiful clusters of purple flowers when in bloom, really very attractive, only just that one have to be " masipag " on sweeping the surroundings for it sheds its leaves constantly. Another good thing about this tree is that its known as a medicinal tree, the leaves, bark and roots are used to cure some ailments. Worry not about its roots, they are not invasive and destructive. We have two of this tree in our property.

Roots of the Ylang-Ylang are ok, not invasive or destructive too but better to plant it not less than 5 meters from the house. But of course avoid planting any kind of big or large trees near fences or drainage pipes, roots are roots and you cannot control where they will spread as they grow.

CHEERS !!

i saw this ornamental tree last week when we bought some frog grass ... they call it Golden Bottle Brush tree (yellow leaves) ... why i like this tree is its low maintenance as the leaves of this tree are so thin. you don't even need to clean the area around the tree ... cheers

@ rosy, no problemo ... nang hingi ako sa owner ng mga shoots and planted it last week, sana mabuhay :-). i'll take a photo of it in a few minutes ... i also saw some nursery shops in marbel selling the tree. the cost is P200 and it's about 3 feet tall. the tree grows to a height of about 12-15 feet. the size of the trunk is about the size of a normal leg of a person. the bark of the tree is similar to the bark of a sampaloc tree, rugged ang texture ... cheers
