Good day to all,

I'm thinking about replacing our old window type AC but I'm confused with the options now.

My primary concern is cost of owning it (electric bills and maintenance) over the years, 2nd is the initial cost (purchase and installation) and far third is the noise (I am no fan of the noise my window type is making).

Our room is only 14 square meters. We are not the type who will use it regularly though, only on summer months of April May June and only on bedtime. I'm thinking of getting the split type inverters hoping that the touted savings in electric bill will be realized. Should I believe the inverter savings thing or this is just marketing hype? Any actual experiences for those who do have inverter AC?

Cheers,

Don C.

Re: Aircon - Are Inverter types worth it?

It's not just a marketing hype. Inverter type aircons and refs do consume less electricity.

The only question is: how long is it going to take for you to recover your investment?

You need to do some computations to answer that question. Lets say your usual electric bill is 2,500. And it goes up to 3,000 in the months of April and May. Then you can say that your current aircon consumes 500/month.

Now lets assume the split-type inverter consumes only half of that. This means you save 250 every month. Or 500 a year since you only use the aircon during summer.

The cost of getting a split-type inverter is what, 25K? Versus zero for the conventional, wihch you already have. This means you will invest 25K in order to save 500 a year. Therefore it will take you 50 years to recover your investment.:eek:

The above computation is for illustration purposes only. I made a lot of assumptions and simplification.

A perfectly sealed room helps reduce the frequency of compressor cycling coupled with correct room capacity airconditioner = savings. The soonest time your room coldness peaks and the longer time it takes before the compressor kicks in the better for you. For bedrooms situated in hotter places try to add sun shades, curtains or architectural tints to the windows to help the aircon reach its peak faster during start up. Keep all doors w/in the room closed like closet doors and bathroom doors to keep coldness from reducing fast. With conventional models you will be able to save just as much. The few advantages I see with split type are the quietness of the head unit and lesser hassles of periodic filter cleaning of window types. The cost of servicing split types are a pain too. Here is a quick guide you may use for your unit selection.. http://abenson.com.ph/pages/easyfurnishaircon.asp Good luck!

Hi Joey,

Thanks for doing the rational thinking for me 🙂 50 year ROI is not fun indeed. Forget the new AC now but I'll need your thinking when there comes a time to replace the window type - inverter or traditional will be the question then and hopefully the inverters would be cheaper.

Cheers,

Gali

Willy,

Thanks for the tips and link. From the sizing chart, I'm fine with just 3/4HP. Question - would it be more economical to have a stronger HP so that it cools faster and shuts off the compresser sooner?

Re: Aircon - Are Inverter types worth it?

If I am not mistaken, compressors of Inverter ACs does not shut off. It slows down or runs fast depending on the room temperature. This is what I want with Inverter ACs. There is not much temperature fluctuations, hence much more comfortable.

Second, with regard to energy savings, we should look at the bigger picture here. The monthly electricity bill savings maybe little but on the long run, the impact on the energy grid may be significant. This technology can reduce overall energy demand which might further reduce cost of electricity.

Having said that, I hope I'll have enough money very soon to afford this kind of AC hahahaha

The real approximation for area coverage is 18 sqm./HP but as you have observed lately, Climate temperatures have climbed so high that we now use 12-14 sqm./HP to compensate for the increased temperature. I believe your chances are better with the 1 HP model. That's how I compute now for my units and so far we aren't sweating anymore.:D Maliit lang naman difference sa price at consumption eh.;)

Re: Aircon - Are Inverter types worth it?

Anyone can recommend an aircon with a high EER Rating?
Been backreading and seems inverter type will not be worth it for me..
Might as well find a non-expensive aircon but has a high EER.. 🙂

Re: Aircon - Are Inverter types worth it?

The highest EER rating i know is 11.5 not sure if condura or carrier brand..around 17k yata at abenson..my condura is 9.5 kaya siguro during summer season my electric bill cost 4k a month:(

Been planning to upgrade my AC to inverter type..the cheapest i saw at sulit is 25,500 (1 HP)
Without installation fee which cost 3k daw..i ask them if i install it by myself..the seller says warranty
Will be voided..:(

Maganda sana dahil almost 60% daw ang matitipid than regular AC..
Napa isip tuloy ako..pambili ko na ng mig welder to ah..hehehe..:D

@ DC
I've been using 1 HP LG inverter split type aircon for three years now for that size of room. so far my unit is performing very well. The electric bill is easier on the pocket than the conventional type that shuts-off the compressor when the temperature setpoint is reached. The frequent stop/start draws more current than the variable frequency control being used by inverter type aircon which just slows down to the right speed needed to maintain the set temperature. Was browsing yesterday in some mall and saw a Panasonic 1HP Window type with 11.7 EER, price tag was 15,999 but I think this is negotiable. Forgot the model though.

I did ask them if there is an inverter na window type - Hitachi pala meron but it's a whopping 50k++ ang price. Imagine a 1HP split inverter type is now about 31k.

Yes, window type inverters cost around 30-50k thereabouts compared to conventional w/c is around half of that price. That's Joey81's and my point about initial cost of purchase against long term savings. Since you are not a heavy user like me, the initial cost outweighs the long term benefits of an inverter. Now if let say you're an operator of an internet shop then you may go for the Inverter series 'coz you need to prolong equipment expectancy plus the acclaimed savings on operational cost of such a set up. It all boils down to cost. You just have to decide what you can really manage at this time. Me, I decided to go conventional 'coz my aircon runs no more than 8 hrs a day so it didn't dent my budget that much and my latest bill said the same.:lalala:

Re: Aircon - Are Inverter types worth it?

for sure Inverter type aircon are worth the hype, it really saves you the money plus minimal temperature fluctuations too across a bigger area in the room.
