Hi I have a 10 cu. ft manual defrost ref. the manual says it consumes 150watts. would like to ask if a AVR with 500VA is a good choice for its voltage regulation needs.

also would like to ask if AVR functions like a surge protector? or this two devices are different from another.

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Avr advice

Refs, freezers and air conditioners need motor protectors more than just voltage regulators. Spikes and surge suppressors are added features of these add on appliances for cases where power exceeds the normal voltage threshold of your appliance. AVR's are more common in areas where voltage drops at an alarming rate usually lower than the percentage tolerance prescribed by the appliance manufacturer. There are AVR's that are fully electronic but may not be ideal for motor operated appliances. There are AVR's that are transformer type designed for wide applications be it motorized or not. If your voltage ranges from 209v to 240v, that falls w/in the +/- 5% average voltage tolerance prescribed by most appliance manufacturers. But if voltage drops lower than 209V then an AVR will work for you depending on how low it gets. They have Double boost AVR's for voltage from 198V to 208V, Triple boost for 187V to 207V and Buck boost 176V to 186V. I just don't know who makes them now as the market has been flooded with Chinese, Chaiwanese and Korean electronic models. Hope this info helps.
