Electric Fan CAPACITOR question

Hello everyone!
I have a Desk top STANDARD Electric fan. I think its an 8" or 9" size fan with 2 speed control.

It ran slow before so nilagyan ko lang nang singer sewing machine oil sa front and rear shaft bushing niya. After mga 6 months, mabagal ulit, so balak ko mag clean at re-oil ulit.

THANK YOU! 🙂
Patrick

Re: Electric Fan CAPACITOR question

Hi Pat,

Electric fan motors, at least the small ones, do not have a starting capacitor. Technically these kind of AC motors are call fractional AC motors because they have a very low power rating, less than 1hp hence the term "fractional". Also, these type of fans have very little starting load so the shaded pole starting method is enough. Shaded pole is, IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, the starting method use in these motors.

Your problem is probably that the bushing or shaft is already worn down. It would be simple enough to take your fan to a fan repair shop but you might want to try DIYing it yourself if only for the satisfaction you'll surely get (or frustration). Don't get discouraged by the seemingly solid connection of the shafting to the armature. The two are just forced fit so you can remove the shafting by pounding it out with hammer. Be sure you don't dammage the threading at the end of the shaft. Use a piece of wood. Also cradle the armature with wood too. A hole in the seat of your dining table chair will do .. just don't let the owner see you.

Good luck.

Re: Electric Fan CAPACITOR question

Starting capacitors for fans are small rectangular boxes. Shaded pole motors have windings of large wire on the pole pieces which are not electrically connected to the AC. They work by delaying the the development of a magnetic field on the pole, thus creating the starting impulse.
