We are currently constructing a house in our farm in Bulacan where the only possible access to supply of water is deep-well that has slight odor, color and sediments. It's good only for watering plants. The area is a long way to the potable water supply. I went to Ace Hardware to check water filtering system. They only have Megafresh MMF Tanks. The whole system includes sand, carbon and resin tanks and the manual operation costs around P53,000 while the digital costs around P95,000. Anybody knows about cheaper filtering system and where I can buy them?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Re: Home water filtering system

Filtration is but one stage in the entire water treatment process. And treatment should be matched to the quality of the raw water being treated.

For example:
You mentioned some coloration. If it is yellowish, could be manganese. If still within DOH levels, no problem. But if there are biologicals, it's another matter. You may need some disinfection like chlorine or UV.

If you want, Jonathan, we can test your deep well water to find out its characteristics then I can recommend the proper treatment for it. Testing involves taking a sample and sending it to our lab. There is a fee for testing, just can't recall how much it is.

PM me if you are interested.

I work for Manila Water, BTW.

Thanks a lot Bro. Ding for the info! Wise advice you gave! It is ok if we try our local water district here in San Jose del Monte to do the testing para malapit. If they can't, then I will get back to you. Thanks again!

Re: Home water filtering system

Yes. Best to look for a nearby lab since a sample should be tested within 30 minutes from abstraction. We actually have refrigerated sampling vans roaming the city to ensure water samples don't go stale.

Make sure you boil the sample bottle first. Then, when taking the sample, flame the tap first to disinfect it. Flaming involves lighting a fire and sisigaan ang gripo so the faucet should not be plastic!

When you get the sample results, send it to me and I can recommend a solution.

Re: Home water filtering system

I don't foresee an immediate need for me ever using this info but I'm very glad I have it now. Just a question from curiosity please.

The water filtration disinfecting system whatever it is .... can it be tapped in stages. I mean different points where the water out will be good for garden watering, toilet use , laundry and washing needs , and a final output good for human consumption

Does it makes sense or all the output water is the same quality. I was just thinking costs thus my inquiry.

Thanks

Re: Home water filtering system

It can be "in stages" so that you have potable and "gray water" (the term used for non-potable use like flushing). If your house is not built to have such a grey water line, it can get bit messy, though. You will need to dedicate specific lines and taps as grey water and others as potable water. Getting confused is easy.

Conventional water treatment is usually (at the risk of oversimplifying) two steps: removal of solids, then disinfection. In your staged scenario, I would think the gray water would simply involve filtration (or sedimentation or both) to remove the solids that make the water turbid. Potable water could involve disinfection; e.g. chlorination or UV.

Again, the staged treatment could vary depending on the raw water quality.

Hope this helps.

Re: Home water filtering system

very interesting topic. I also have a farm house and I draw water from a well. I also need a way to filter the water just for washing and bathing. Is this the same as grey water line? is there a cost effective way of removing sediments and other solid materials?

Re: Home water filtering system

Grey water is a vast definition. It simply means not wastewater but not potable, so interpretations can be widely different.

Have your deep well water tested. Many deep wells do not require filtration because the pathogens (that's harmful bacteria, if we remember our high school biology) could not survive. If so, all you would need would be filtration, but only if turbidity is beyond acceptable limits.

The turbidity limit for drinking water (according to the Phil National Standards for Drinking Water) is 5NTU. If, water you tested is below that, no need to filter. Turbidity is the easiest test and can be done on-the-spot. Bacteriological testing, which determines if you need disinfection (e.g. chlorination), takes 48 hours.

Re: Home water filtering system

sorry to revive this old thread. quick question to you guys who have experience in water filtering, I have 1 stage filter for the whole house, now the question is, there are lots of brands in the market with varying prices for the same 5micron that I am getting. I do not have the means to determine which brand to stick on to, any brand you can recommend?, currently I am using Megafresh.

Re: Home water filtering system

I have no problem with the Megafresh brand, that is what I use too, purchased at DIY Shops or mall hardware stores and which I replace every three or four months. Sometimes I use the ceramic filters though a bit more expensive, but I suppose the brand you are using is just fine as long as it filters your household water of rust, sand and other water impurities. 😉

Re: Home water filtering system

Re: Home water filtering system

thank you everyone, I value your inputs. Minsan kasi ang mga salesmen walang first hand experience on the filters that they sell, they are just relying on one sheet of paper and tell you things.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" - 'ika nga. If Megafresh works OK with you right now, stay with it.

You can also try varying brands of the filter. The body or casing is standard size so it will allow you to experiment.

I presently use US pure, a brand available in Ace Hardware. I have tried varying types : "the colied yarn", the "pleated sheet" and lately the "hard sponge".

I do have a smaller secondary filter attached to the kitchen faucet for drinking and cooking.

Just...[COLOR="Red"]DRILL IT!

Re: Home water filtering system

you can mix brands of housing/filter as long as they will fit and that the upper/lower gaskets seal well.

one thing you need to consider is the internal threads of the filter housing. my wife and i were in a hurry so we just grabed what we need not knowing that what we bought had the plastic threads (home aid). i find the megafresh one's better since they have brass threads. the thing that i hate about plastic threads is that its inconsistent (ie at times you have to use a ton of teflon, and at times just a few). so, if you'll purchase new ones, get the one with a metal thread.

for the fittings, i used stainless. since it will be under sink, i replaced the angle valve with a wassernison dual angle valve so no need for T, much neater looking.

for the hose, i bought a megafresh hose and fitting from ace megamall - this will connect the last filter housing to the faucet.

for the fauce, i got a kasch filtered water faucet. there are 2 kinds of this, be sure to get what is compatible with the hose fiting you have. only one of those is compatible btw. i think its the one that's 2.4k. just bring your sample to be sure.
