Ref defrost heater

I recently noticed our ref freezer was not defrosting properly. So I opened up the freezer compartment to expose the evaporator coils. It was covered with ice (which shouldn't be the case). I let the ice melt so I can see the defrost heater glass tube. Basag basag na pala ang glass tube , which means that it's now unable to radiate heat from the wires inside the glass tube. Does anyone know where to buy a replacement defrost heater glass tube? My ref is already 13 yrs old and ngayon lang nasira. It's a GE Spacemaker 18 cubic feet 2-door ref. Nagtanong na ako sa 2 ref / appliance repair shop - wala daw silang ganung part?! Help naman. TIA.

Re: Ref defrost heater

Why not consider buying a new one?
Teenager na rin yung White Westinghouse namin when we replaced it with an Electrolux. Although reliable yung Westinghouse, matanda na siya at malakas na sa kuryente.
I think the rule of thumb is to replace the ref every 10 years as it gets to eat up a lot of electricity as it gets older.

Re: Ref defrost heater

New technology keeps making appliances more and more energy efficient. And when buying refs and aircons, look at the yellow EER sticker. Buy the appliance that has the higher EER. It will save you much money over the life of the appliance, especially refs that have long service lives.

Re: Ref defrost heater

Actually, gusto ni wifey to just buy a new one ( what did you expect..he he he). E ako naman, hanggat pwedeng ayusin, pwede pa. Wala pa tayong pambili eh. Maybe by next year pa. I'll try to contact MRV at DRV. The shops I asked ( yung mga kanto-kanto lang) said they have defrost heater rods, but not defrost heater glass tubes. Pwede ba ito gamitin? Don't want to just assume it can do the job, baka it might cause a fire pa. In the meantime, I just instruct the maid to unplug the ref every 6 hours to simulate a defrost cycle, and plug after 1 hour. Thanks for the responses.

Re: Ref defrost heater

The other thing to consider is not just the material of the defrost rods but the wattage and physical dimensions. Too high a wattage and you are wasting electricity; too low and the defrost cycle will not work properly.

Re: Ref defrost heater

there are several ref-aircon supply stores in quiapo near raon. sorry i forgot the exact street name but it's only a few streets away from raon. the shops are clustered together.

they would usually ask for the sample of the part you are looking for.

i hope this helps...
