Started this project on turtle pace late last year but slowly catching up..i hope to finish everything before March ends..this is going to be a one man job.
The room is my room at our ancestral house in the province and only working on weekends.
Room size is 10 x 16 feet, ceiling made of lawanit with water seepage marks looking like some giant well done pancakes! Tore down the ceiling with some help. You would not believe the dirt it had accumulated for the last 40 years or so..yes the house was built when i was a year old and completed in two years...the trusses were some dense local wood. Yakal and Guijo made the most of it.
The floor boards are T&G, still 3/4" thick unlike todays stocks.
The ceiling will be the first installment, followed by the walls, with built in cabinets, and later the flooring.
Total budget is 50 grand...hope to beat it to down 50% of the total budget.
Materials on hand:
PVC panels for ceiling, 2.2 boxes worth 9,000 pesos..easier to install, saves me from painting jobs.
will post pics when able to upload via photobucket.
stay tuned and wish me all the strength and luck!

Re: 2012 Room Facelift: 1. Ceiling
this is the first set of pictures for this wip:
this is the 10' x 16' room previously with lawanit ceiling nailed onto wooden 2" x 2" battens..
the ceiling material will now be these pvc planks, with light colored wooden design, 10 feet long and 12 cm wide...thickness is about 8mm, corrugated type...each panel interlocks..cost is 240pesos per panel..total of 44 panels...
relatively expensive than traditional ceiling material but minus the hard labor of primering, sanding, painting (3x)...
benefits of these pvc panels...
1. it wont rot,
2. easy to install (one man job, i dont hire labor man! remember this is a DIY site!)
3. pre finished.
tools and materials needed:
1. sturdy ladder ( i have a Werner 8 foot aluminum ladder)
2. 1" gypsum screws ( i bought 1000 pieces of this at 220 pesos only..cheaper by the bulk
3. cordless drill with philips screw driver to drive the gypsum screws
4. 1 bessey uni klamp
5. jigsaw to cut out the pinlight recess
6. loomex 1.6mm wire
7. long nose plier
8. electrical tape
9. junction boxes
10. 12mm staples for the loomex wires
to be continued...

Re: 2012 Room Facelift: 1. Ceiling
Wow. Good to benchmark. Pwede sa bahay namin sa Marikina. Subscribed as well...
Re: 2012 Room Facelift: 1. Ceiling
just to continue..
since i am working singly, i needed to hold and fix the 10 feet long planks by screwing it the to the battens at one end after clamping it in elsewhere within my reach..then go on the opposite end and screw the same..all in all i need to go up and down the ladder 5 times! times 44 panels...
of course i cant do it physically in one day...pretty tiring for me because this task is compressing my tummy (yes the liver agh!)

Re: 2012 Room Facelift: 1. Ceiling
Maybe you should invest on learning how to walk on stilts, Doc:D!
Re: 2012 Room Facelift: 1. Ceiling
probably yes like they do in the states..hehe..but there is this fear of heights inside my brain eh..kahit na 5 feet high lang and on those stilts...wooooooooo...better be sure using the ladder.

Re: 2012 Room Facelift: 1. Ceiling
Not aware of any locally.
But google "homemade stilts" and you'll see a lot of photos, videos, and instructions.
I think a good pair should be light, e.g. improvised from an aluminum saklay.
