Re: All about DIY Concrete Mouldings

Enjoyed really your concrete molding step by step series, still going over and over the entire procedure. 😉

As I have said in my last reply in this thread I'll be asking some questions regarding your "tutorial".

1. You did not mention or explain how to make the template
2. What kind of material did you use for the template or is there a possible substitute or alternative material for the template?
3. If you are using metal plate or whatever, what is the thickness of the metal plate in mm?
4. What kind of steel bar do you use inside the molding, is it a plain round bar or the corrugated steel bar?
5. Isn't the 4mm steel wire or bar to small and soft for the molding, can't we use the 8 or 9 mm steel bar?
6. And how long will it take for the drying time before the molding can be used?

And for clarification, so for every template design there will be two templates, the smaller one for rough application, and the slight larger one is for the finishing process, correct me if I'm wrong. :p

Pasensya ka na OSSIE ha, e plenty of questions and hope you've got lots of patience in answering. I just really want to learn this skill cos its got lots of potentials. 😎

Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: All about DIY Concrete Mouldings

@rosy,
heres the answer.
1. simply get your design of your taste in the internet, then cut it out using hack saw and file to make it smooth, and sand paper to make smoother 😀
2. i also tried using acrylic plastic and its also good for template, but the aluminum sheet is much better.
3. 3mm
4. prefer is corrugated
5. 4mm is enough or 5mm, more than that is over kill and over spending hahaha if you are going to make wider moulding, you can add another 4mm steel for better support
6. as experienced, overnight curing is ok. let say you finished the moulding in the afternoon, you can install it right away in the morning, much easier to drill hole since its not really hard or fully cured. when drilling hole to fasten the moulding in the wall, counter bore or counter sink the hole.

yes, im using 2 template, but its up to you, you can also use the finishing template. just remove some thin cement layer for the pure cement finishing. maarte lang ako kasi ayaw ko malagyan ng sementong buhangin yung finishing template ko, minsan kasi sumisingit at yung iba napapasama sa pure cement.

no problem bro, ok lang. hope to see your WIP na.

Re: All about DIY Concrete Mouldings

I tried this tutorial over the weekend and got one made but it eas rough in the finish. I did not have allumianum plate so I used a piece of very thin Zinc sheet 27 guage i think. It too k a very long time for me to get it to the rough finish which was further complecated by the rough nature of the cement used. It was an old bag with considerable lumps in it.

I thought I learned a lot through the exerise and will be trying out my hand sometime soon on it again aith better made templates.

Can you explain how you secure it to the wall please

Let's say you were able to finish a concrete molding of about 1 meter, you will have to drill some 3 or 4 holes in the molding where a 4" or 5" inches of concrete nail can fit, then position it on the wall where you will fasten it then mark drilled holes on to the wall. Now with the marked hole on the wall, drill those holes using a smaller bit for concrete of course so when the nails are driven to it there will be some sort of grip on the nails. The back of the molding, you will apply some fresh cement mixture similar to attaching tiles on walls, then drawing the concrete nails thru the molding and to the concrete wall securing molding on the wall.

Hope this satisfies your query on how to secure the molding to the wall.

Cheers and good luck !! 😉

Re: All about DIY Concrete Mouldings

Among all the detecting activities, gold metal detecting is the most interesting one. It can not only relax both your body and mind , but also give you a big fortune if you are lucky enough.Next time if you feel bored, you can pick up a gold detector and have a try.

Re: All about DIY Concrete Mouldings

it's good to know that you are making this concrete mouldings, Kingken.

i also tried old/stock cement before and experienced some rough finished because of the cement's grain, so it is better to use new bag of cement. after opening, stock it to an air tight drum. even the brand of cement matters, i prefer Rizal brand 🙂

putting some pure cement on top of the mouldings and using water spray will help you finish the mouldings smoother.

have lots of patience and practice and you will see the outcome of your labor.

fastening the mouldings into the wall was already answered by our master - Rosy. in addition to this, i'm also putting some concrete nails from mouldings to the wall for about 30 deg angle (top to bottom - or patusok) so it will really secure it.

can you post some pictures of your WIPs here?
